ENVE's SES 3.4 Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset with DT Swiss 240 Hubs has earned a reputation as one of the more versatile wheelsets available with its balance of aerodynamics and lightweight climbing ability, and it's back for 2017 with a few tweaks that look to make it even better. This year sees the 3.4 drop some weight, gain tubeless compatibility, and sit with a wider stance and slightly different rim depth pairing than its predecessor. The takeaway from all of these changes is increased stability in the crosswinds, snappier handling, and a smoother ride.

The new rim profile features a mammoth 21mm internal width for both front and rear, quite a bit wider than the previous 3.4's 18.5mm front and 16.5mm rear combination. ENVE says this wide stance optimizes aerodynamics with a 25mm tire while also boosting tire volume, which in turn allows lower tire pressure for a smoother, more efficient ride. Swapping the tubes for tubeless will take full advantage of the new rim width by reducing pinch flat risk while further reducing pressure and rolling resistance. On the road, this makes for a nearly perfect blend of speed and comfort.

The rim depth continues ENVE's commitment to a shallower front and deeper rear pairing, but brings the numbers closer together with the front rim gaining 3mm to 38mm in depth and the rear losing 3mm to clock in at 42mm in depth. ENVE claims that this new pairing improves handling and stability in windy conditions without sacrificing any aerodynamics, which means you'll be riding smooth instead of wrestling with the wind at speed. At the brake track, the 3.4 carries over 2016's in-molded Gen 2 brake surface, which offers 30% stronger stopping power and the ability to retain 95% of its braking power when being used in wet conditions.

As with all its SES wheels, ENVE uses its most sophisticated technology and engineering techniques to create this fast, stiff, and aerodynamic wheelset. The ENVE SES series boasts the highest strength-to-weight ratio on the market, due in part to ENVE's patented process of molding in spoke holes, nipple seats, and valve stem holes. Knowing that carbon fiber gains strength from continuous fibers, ENVE routes the fibers around each hole in a 100% intact design, which allows a lower weight at the spoke face and adds overall rigidity to the rim. ENVE also removes the rim-shaping inflatable bladder in the rim, which, while time-consuming, serves to reduce rim weight and makes for a perfectly tensioned wheel build.

With the width on these 2017 3.4’s going wider than the previous model, will they work with the narrow stays of a Pinarello Gan (2017 model)?

Flexy and creaky

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My set may be a bad example, but they are very flexy and noodly. They rub on the break pads and creak loudly under acceleration or climbing. Not happy with these wheels at all. My old Reynolds or Rolf Ares 4s were stiff and quiet and I expected these expensive ENVEs to be even better, but not at all the case. I am not even riding these anymore as I cannot stand the flexing or noise they make. Very irritating.

Prior to purchasing my ENVE SES 3.4 wheelset, I read numerous reviews on them and the competitors. My head exploded!

Working with the Gear Heads, I selected this wheel. I'm impressed with the staggered sizing as it comes in handy in the Texas winds.

The other design feature is the braking surface. You will definitely know when the brakes are applied when you hear the high pitched whine of the surface action. Very comforting. These wheels "stop".

I have a Pinarello Gan S and the blacked out decals look great with the bike. This wheelset is consistent with the cycling reviews. A nice climber and all around performer.

Enve 3.4 SES Gen. 2- Massive Differences

I use to ride the Enve 3.4 SES Generation 1 wheelset. Due to unusual brake track wear, my Enve wheels got replaced with the newer Generation 2 Enve 3.4 wheelset. What do I like about this new generation? The braking is greatly improved. Braking makes a high-pitched whistling sound to let other riders know you are braking (safety feature?). I don't mind it.
The stability is much better, especially when descending down mountain passes with cross-winds. The tubeless set up is great so far (500 miles). I've been riding schwalbe pro one tires and they roll really nice (i.e. speedy!). All in all, a superior wheelset, great warranty, and customer service is #1. Highly recommend this newer generation wheelset.

have used for about a month. love the wheels, tubeless set up is easy and makes for a very comfortable ride (particularly compared to my Zipp 303 tubulars). braking also far superior. these rims are wide, I have direct mount shimano brakes, rear is mounted under the chain stay. Avoiding brake rub under power/flex has required a lot of adjusting. not an issue for the front. Otherwise, I love them

A great, amazing set of wheels

Just got these for my 2017 S-Works Tarmac. First ride: 3,000 feet of climbing with 30 - 40 mph wind from all directions. My previous "horses" were Zipp 404 Firecrest (a wonderful wheelset) but these Enve 3.4 are lighter, snappier, less prone to wind deflection, and more stable on descents. First impressions, sure, but off to a good start compared to very strong Zipp competition.

Hi C Joe...Quick question, Are your Enve 3.4 clinchers the tubeless version ? My understanding is there are two different generation 2 versions in existence... An earlier non-tubeless with 35mm front and 45mm rear depth, and the current tubeless with 38mm front and 42mm rear depth...Thanks for your review and forthcoming response...
