The King's enve.

So you've made the switch to the 27.5-inch wheel size, recognizing its balance of virtues that are optimized for riding the hairiest trails you can find. That just-right diameter isn't the whole story, though, so don't fall short and pick up some less-than-stellar wheelset. The ENVE M70/Thirty 27.5-inch Chris King wheelset not only features some of the best, most capable hoops on the trail, it laces them to Chris King hubs for an unbeatable combo for your days of gnar.

When ENVE set about designing the M70/Thirty rim, the goal was to build a hoop that was stronger and more capable than the previous-generation "AM" model rim. Unsurprisingly, the team in Ogden, Utah, delivered in spades. The 27.5in M70/Thirty rim now weighs 453g, making it slightly heavier than the AM rim, but the payoff is increased width, to better accommodate today’s larger tires, and astounding strength. Part of the strength increase comes from trading in traditional bead hooks for a redesigned beadless hook bead, which is both lighter and more impact resistant. The width is a whopping 25mm internally, which provides a round tire profile, for greater cornering stability, and more rubber on the ground at any given time. Anyone who’s familiar with ENVE knows the fanatical lengths that its engineers go to in order to achieve a perfect ride feel. Accordingly, the M70/Thirty has been tuned to provide a degree of vertical compliance, enhancing both grip and rider comfort, without sacrificing the fantastic lateral rigidity that endows ENVE with the “on rails” feeling for which they’re prized.

Up next are those excellent hubs. The name Chris King in cycling componentry is synonymous with absolute quality, longevity, and aesthetic appeal to boot. All parts, including seals and bearings, are made in-house in Portland, Ore., to industry-beating standards, and are known for lasting years upon years without service. In fact, the company's quality control standards are so stringent that it's been known to melt down entire batches of hub shells if the color anodizing is off by even the slightest shade of hue. In the rear hub, the 72 (yes, seventy two) points of engagement give the freehub body the fastest response of any hub on the market, and a distinctive sound to go along with it. That same rear hub is designed to withstand a consistent 800 ft/lbs of torque, quadruple what most hubs are even tested to, and downright ridiculous when you consider that an Olympic-level track sprinter is capable, at peak power, for only a few seconds, of putting out around 150 ft/lbs. Like we said, when it comes to hubs, Chris King makes them second to none.

The ENVE M70/Thirty 27.5in Chris King Wheelset is available with either an SRAM XD 1x freehub body or a standard freehub body, and in the color Black. The Chris King ISO hubs are compatible with 6-bolt brake rotors only.

Carbon is the ANSWER.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

For rocky and uneven terrain, these are the best wheels for dampening everything. They're the last wheels you'll buy - bomber carbon fiber and smooth rides for the rest of your life. Arm-pump NO MORE!

I race enduro, and ride DH and these wheels were a game changer for my race results. Improved my times by 30+ seconds per stage.

So you've snagged your perfect trail frame, gathered all of those precious components together and you're on the hunt for the best wheelset, unwilling to compromise or settle.

Meet your Prince Charming, Cinderella.

My favorite part of the match made in heaven that is the ENVE hoop and the Chris King hub is this: the longer you ride them, the better they get. Yes, really.

Like PB&J, green eggs and ham, blue to the sky and Bert & Ernie, the match of Chris King hubs and ENVE m70s is simply... Perfect. From two of the companies most celebrated for premium quality, this carbon love child is rowdy yet composed, quick to respond, and strong as an ox. From the engagement points in the hub to the twin five-year warranties, this wheelset is like the Hulk meeting Venus -- strong as hell and beautiful to the end... If your definition of beauty is the subdued buzz of the Chris King hub as you sail through the sky.

Looks, brains and longevity: the perfect mate for any quality bike build.
