A rouleur for the trail.
The ENVE M60 Forty 29in Chris King Boost Wheelset is best conceptualized as a do-it-all wheelset that lands perfectly in the space between all-mountain durability and raw XC speed. ENVE's goal when designing this rim was to fill the gap between the previous "XC" and "AM" model rims, with the understanding that such a midpoint represented the ultimate rim for the way that most of us ride off-road. Unsurprisingly, the team in Ogden, Utah, delivered in spades.
The 29in M60/Forty rim set weighs in at a claimed 856 grams, which is feathery light considering its generous 23mm internal rim width. Part of this weight savings has been accomplished by trading in traditional bead hooks for a redesigned beadless hook bead, which is both lighter and more impact resistant. The wide platform provides a round tire profile, translating to greater cornering stability and more rubber on the ground at any given time.
Anyone who’s familiar with ENVE knows the fanatical lengths that its engineers go to in order to achieve a perfect ride feel, and by removing material from the rim, ENVE takes the M60 Forty’s tuned ride to previously unseen levels. Accordingly, the M60 Forty has been tuned to provide a degree of vertical compliance, which reduces rider fatigue, without sacrificing the fantastic lateral rigidity that endows ENVE wheels with the “on rails” feeling for which they’re prized.
The rim tells the bulk of the story, but it's also worth noting that these wheels are hand built in Utah, to exacting standards, which provides the longevity you’d expect out of a class-leading wheel system. They’re also laced to Chris King hubs, which are typically only seen on custom premium builds.
