With a wheelset that's proven to us time and again that it can dominate terrain from unruly all mountain, tedious and loose climbs, and fast race day cross country, we shouldn't be surprised that the new ENVE M60 Forty HV 29in Boost Wheelset would rule the mountain just as before, but we remain enamored none the less. The new HV model of the classic M60 moves out the internal rim width from 23mm of latter days to a more generous 26mm that accommodates a beefier tire, and widens the hub to 110mm front and 148mm rear Boost spacing that has become standard on today's mountain bikes. This wider rim will be most effectively paired with a 2.3 to 2.4inch tire for increasing the volume and tread contact on a huge array of terrain. The cranked up tire volume and boost in stiffness afforded by the widening of the hub make the M60 Forty HV wheels at home on rough and rowdy all mountain trails as much as a XC race.
The M60 Forty HV model still targets the space between XC and all-mountain rims with a blend of lightweight speed and big-hit durability that covers the majority of off-road riding. The HV model weighs a bit more than the standard iteration, but it's still among the lightest wheels we'd pair with a five-inch travel bike. The redesigned, hook-less bead is both lighter and more impact resistant than a standard, hooked bead, and the extra width allows for higher tire volume, increasing cornering stability and putting more rubber on the ground at any given time.
As with all of its wheels, the M60 Forty HVs feature ENVE's Smart system to create a strong, stable wheel for any conditions. A patented process of molding in-spoke holes, nipple seats, and valve stem holes is largely responsible for ENVE's proven reputation of creating wheels boasting the highest strength-to-weight ratio available in the industry. ENVE routes the carbon fibers around each hole to maintain continuous fiber integrity, which results in both increased rim rigidity and lower weight at the spoke face.
When laced to a hub, this system facilitates higher and more uniform spoke tension than standard bladder molding. Additionally, ENVE uses a process that removes the inner bladder during the molding process, resulting in lower weight compared to the many composite manufacturers who leave the rim-shaping, inflatable bladder in the rim once the wheel is complete. While the removal process takes time and added expense, it results in a lighter rim and a perfectly tensioned wheel build.
While the rim tells most of the story, two other facts are worth stating. First, the wheels are hand built in Utah to exacting standards for the longevity you’d expect out of a class-leading wheel system. Second, those big, bruising, Boost hubs make for stiffer tracking up front and yet more improvements to responsiveness out back. These wheels are almost never caught on the back foot, even while climbing across rocks through steep switchbacks. The small engagement angle of DT Swiss' star ratchet freewheel also helps clear rocky cruxes and makes for a wheelset that may very well outlast your next few frames.
