It can be hard to keep up with the constant evolutions of tech in the mountain bike industry. Axles, bottom brackets, geometries — even we are occasionally overwhelmed and jaded by all the new standards. There are two innovations that we think are definitely worth riding, though, and the ENVE M60 Forty HV 27.5in Wheelset encompasses them both.
The first is so well established as to be canon at this point, but anyone who has yet to experience the 27.5in sweet spot is certainly doing themselves no favors. The second is the trend toward larger, high-volume tires, and ENVE's HV rim profile bulks out from 23 to 26mm of internal width in order to take full advantage of the benefits of tires up to 2.4in in diameter.
Boosted width aside, the M60 Forty HV model still targets the space between XC and all-mountain rims with a blend of lightweight speed and big-hit durability that covers the majority of off-road riding. It may weigh a bit more than the standard version, but the HV is still among the lightest wheels we'd pair with a mid-travel trail bike. The HV model's greater width makes the rims stiffer and also allows a higher tire volume for greater cornering stability and more rubber on the ground at any given time.
The rim tells most of the story, but two other facts are worth stating. First, the wheels are hand built in Utah to exacting standards for the longevity you’d expect out of a class-leading wheel system. Second, The small engagement angle of DT Swiss' 240 hubs helps clear rocky cruxes and make for a wheelset that may very well outlast your next few frames.
