XC Gold Standard.

Take a look at the current World Cup cross-country courses and your own XC trails. These tracks have certainly transformed and become more technical rewarding racers who possess both speed and skill. Bikes have evolved to meet these needs and most racers are sporting full-suspension machines full-time with slacker head tube angles to cope with the demands of the more challenging courses. Naturally, wheels needed to evolve as well as we begin to see racers shying away from the anorexic rubber of old, and select wider tires to increase comfort, traction, and rolling resistance. Built for the super-efficient hardtail or short travel full-suspension bike in mind, the M525 29in Boost Wheelset replaces ENVE's highly successful M50 Fifty with a drop of 21g per rim for quicker acceleration out of the turns and up the climbs and actually increase both rims and tire durability. Built on the new normal boost spacing, these carbon hoops build a super stiff, responsive wheelset that will give you an edge on race day, plus the reliability on all of your training rides and trail exploits.

ENVE had clear objectives when redesigning a replacement for the venerable M50 rims. Dropping weight and increasing the inner width was a given, and engineers looked to boost durability of the rim and mitigate the chances that the bead hook would cut the tire. In doing so, racers could run wider tires with a less robust casing saving weight and increasing compliance. After a few rides we have to say the team did a great job.

The hookless bead first appeared on the M50 and ENVE perfects them on the M525. The wide hookless bead is the culmination of 2 years of development to address rim and tire durability. The rim shape features a broader leading edge on the bead creating a more forgiving platform for the tire to bottom out on, effectively reducing the likelihood of pinch or snake-bite style flats. The design is two-fold and the wide hookless bead also allows for greater impact resistance against the trail. You can confidently run lower tire pressures and improve traction and rolling resistance. The internal width has grown too. Increasing from 21mm internally to a healthy 25mm. That provides a better tire profile for increased cornering stability and a better footprint everywhere on the trail.

These improvements in weight and durability are great but if the wheels don't have a great ride, who cares? The team at ENVE obsesses about ride quality and the carbon, resins, layup, spoke count, and even lacing are all careful considered for the intended discipline of the wheelset to achieve a perfect ride feel. As such, the M525 construction and hole count (24h versus 28h on the M50) were chosen for greater vertical compliance for the long hours in the saddle, therefore reducing fatigue without sacrificing the renowned lateral rigidity that corners with such authority, you actually have to adjust your riding style; they are that responsive.

At the heart of every ENVE rim is the patented molded in-spoke holes, nipple seats, and valve holes which create the highest strength-to-weight ratio available in the industry. No need to fear the dreaded nipple pull through. ENVE routes the carbon fibers around each hole to maintain continuous fiber integrity versus the industry standard of drilling post cure, which cuts the fibers weakening the structure. This results in both increased rim rigidity and lower weight at the spoke face.

The internal nipples are able to articulate in their pockets much like a ball-and-socket joint. This yields higher and more uniform spoke tension. Saving every gram possible, ENVE's rim building process includes removing the bladder whereas many composite manufacturers leave the rim-shaping, inflatable bladder in the rim once the wheel is complete. This process takes more time and expertise, but the end result is a lighter and more perfectly balanced rim.

This particular build sees the M525 rims laced to hubs worthy of such great rims in the form of the DT Swiss 240. Boost spacing promises positive tracking up front and increased stiffness in the rear. These hubs are for the centerlock standard and can be used with 6-bolt rotors with adapters. Standard HG freehub or XD drivers for SRAM are available. The 240s are renowned for their lightweight construction, remarkable durability, and tool-free service. ENVE offers a 5-year warranty and lifetime crash replacement for the original owner.
