EC90 AERO85 Disc Brake Wheel

It's well documented that deeper wheels are faster. In every riding scenario, barring double-digit gradient climbs, the vast majority of drag comes from air resistance. No doubt you've noticed deeper and deeper wheels sneaking into the pro peloton and on tri bikes because when sprinting, setting off in a breakaway, or attempting to stop the clock just a little quicker, deep section wheels are your best allies as they allow you to ride faster and further with less effort. However, depth isn't everything, and if a rim's shape isn't optimized to work in a variety of yaw-angles or have the ability to remain stable in crosswinds, your handling, confidence, and ultimately speed will all suffer. But that doesn't have to be the case and thanks to excellent wheel designs like Easton's Tubeless EC90 AERO85 Disc Brake Wheel you can go fast no matter what the wind conditions are.

On this EC90 Aero 85 Disc wheel, Easton expanded on its much-lauded Aero55 Fantom rim profile and made it deeper and even faster. Traditional airfoil rims are super-fast when faced with straight on wind at a 0-degree yaw angle, however, the wind is rarely at this angle for much of your ride, and as the wind begins to hit the rim at different yaw angles, pointier profile rims tend to slow way down and become terribly unstable. The Fantom shape works by reducing the low-pressure void left behind the rim after it punches through the air. This laminar flow of air creates a more continuous airstream over the rim where it stays attached for longer and reduces that turbulent pocket of low-pressure air, so the rims are faster and more stable in blustery conditions.

Optimized aerodynamics aside, our second favorite feature of these wheels is its road tubeless rims. The 85mm deep rims come in at a healthy 19mm internal and 28mm external width and are ideal for 25mm tires which are the preferred width for all-around road riding and racing as it combines traction, ride comfort, low rolling resistance, and aerodynamics. Adding a bit of sealant does wonders for preventing flats and we're simply smitten by its ability to achieve more volume allowing us to run lower air pressure without the fear of pinch flats...or goatheads.

The Vault road disc hubs roll on sealed cartridge bearings and come set up as 12mm front and 12 x 142mm rear thru-axle that are also QR compatible. Rotors mount to the centerlock standard. The wheel is laced with the "expected on any high-end wheelset" Sapim CX-Ray spokes with 24 of them in a 2-cross pattern on the front and rear wheels, threading into external alloy nipples, so in the rear instance that you have to true them, there's no need to hassle with removing the tire and rim strip. The EC90 Aero85 Disc Wheel tips the scale at 1856 grams for the set, not bad considering its depth and the increase in average speed you're sure to expect on every ride.
