Troy Carbon 27.5 X01 Eagle Complete Mountain Bike
From epic backcountry adventures on unfamiliar singletrack, to blistering laps on your favorite local trails, DeVinci's Troy Carbon 27.5 X01 Eagle Complete Mountain Bike inspires confidence wherever you ride with 5.5-inches of terrain-taming Split Pivot suspension paired with geometry inspired by DeVinci's team riders. Ever since the first Troy was released in 2013 it was a leader in the 27.5-wheeled all-mountain category. This third generation of the bike continues that trend with a redesigned frame that increases stiffness and tire clearance, as well as refined geometry that improves stability when the trail points downward. With a burly carbon frame, an XO1 Eagle drivetrain, top-tier Rockshox suspension, and Race Face carbon wheels, this bike is built with no compromises when it comes to performance and longevity.
DeVinci gave this new Troy a full carbon frame including the rocker link, which was aluminum on the previous generation. The new carbon frame improves stiffness and responsiveness while saving about 1.5lb compared to their alloy offerings. DeVinci takes frame stiffness a step further by making the transition to Super Boost 12 x 157mm rear spacing. Before you balk at the thought of a new hub standard, 157mm hub spacing has been around on downhill bikes for a number of years. Super Boost simply widens the hub flange to improve the spoke bracing angle, resulting in a much stiffer wheel that's better able to resist lateral flex while cornering, braking, and charging through technical terrain. In addition to the stiffness benefits, Super Boost allows DeVinci to keep the chainstays super short while still clearing a 27.5 x 2.8in tire and up to a 38t front chainring—pretty impressive numbers that give you a wide range of tread and gearing options. DeVinci also made the switch to a threaded bottom bracket, a huge plus in our book as it eliminates the creaking that often plagues press fit systems and is more friendly to service.
A DeVinci wouldn't be a DeVinci without its Split Pivot rear suspension. Designed by suspension guru Dave Weagle, Split Pivot is comprised of a main pivot and a concentric rear axle pivot separated by the chainstay (hence the name Split Pivot), as well as the brake link (seatstay) that floats between a rocker link and the concentric rear pivot. The floating brake link sets Split Pivot apart from other suspension designs by its ability to isolate braking forces from acceleration and suspension forces, resulting in unwavering traction across rough terrain—even while braking or pedaling. Many suspension designs firm up under braking, causing a loss of traction and reduced sensitivity. Split Pivot feels fully active throughout the travel and soaks up chunky rock gardens and square-edged hits with a smoothness unmatched by most suspension designs, all while maintaining a supportive platform for pedaling, climbing, and popping off trail features. Suspension performance is further improved by the switch to a Trunnion-mounted metric shock, as the Trunnion mount pivots on bearings rather than bushings, reducing overall friction for a more sensitive suspension response.
The Troy also sees updated geometry that gives you an extra edge when the trail gets rowdy. Longer reach paired with a slacker head tube angle give the bike more stability on descents and high speed sections, providing some extra confidence to let go of the brakes when the trail gets steep and sketchy. With Super Boost rear spacing, DeVinci is able to keep the chainstays to a stubby 16.8-inches despite the massive tire clearance, giving the bike a playful feel that encourages jibbing and corners like it's on rails. The geometry is also adjustable via a flip-chip that's conveniently located at the lower shock mount, allowing you to switch from the default "low" position to a "high" position that raises the bottom bracket and steepens the head angle to improve pedaling performance on big days with lots of climbing.
DeVinci employs their mountain bike specific DMC-G carbon lay-up for the Troy. Using EPS molding, DeVinci creates a monocoque carbon frame with flawless consistency throughout the carbon layers, eliminating resin-pooling and inconsistencies that can negatively affect the strength of the frame. DeVinci puts a lot of emphasis on frame strength and rigidity, and while some might argue that their frames are overbuilt, we appreciate the bombproof and stiff construction that inspires absolute confidence when you're smashing through technical terrain—even if it means a little extra weight. It also allows DeVinci to offer a lifetime frame warranty to the original owner. The frame has internal cable routing for clean lines throughout, and comes with molded frame guards for the downtube and chainstay to protect your investment from impacts while silencing chain slap. The frame has a two-position bottle cage mount as well, widening the range of mounting options to allow compatibility with larger water bottles, and ensuring there's enough bottle clearance should you decide to throw on a piggyback or coil shock.
The folks at DeVinci spec this bike with a first-rate build kit ready for season after season of aggressive trail riding. The top-tier RockShox Pike fork features the updated DebonAir spring and Charger2 damper for improved small-bump sensitivity, and pairs perfectly with the RockShox Deluxe RT3 rear shock. SRAM's enduro-worthy XO1 Eagle drivetrain shifts crisply across the wide range cassette, ensuring smooth accelerations and a gear for every pitch. Stopping duties are handled by SRAM Guide RSC brakes that blend abundant stopping power with modulation that gives you more control. The carbon fiber Race Face Next R36 wheels are built for enduro-style abuse and have a wide 36mm internal width that's ideal for 2.4 - 2.8in tires, rounded out with Vault hubs and their super-fast engagement that makes a big difference when it's time to put the power down.
