High style for low temperatures.

De Marchi's women's Milano Jacket combines the haute couture style evoked by its namesake city with the in-saddle functionality of the foul-weather super jerseys populating the peloton. The Milano is made from a three-layer membrane that incorporates the windproof Windtex material for ultimate protection on dry, frigid, winter rides. The Windtex protects an insulating inner face of brushed fleece that sits gently against skin or base layers, allowing for layering combinations that can maintain comfort well into the low 30s. Straps at the cuffs and collar maintain a seal against the elements, while a common theme of elastane stretch runs throughout the jacket, ensuring that its race-cut fit doesn't entail undue restriction.

Well-made, nice-fitting jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

This jacket is exceptional in its attention to detail--overall construction, reflective elements, snap sleeves to tighten, short zip on back to extend width, deep pockets, and the handy little zipper pull. The jacket overall looks and feels expensive (as it was without the sale price). It feels warm, but so far I've only used it for running, but will use it for cycling when it's not quite so cold (my hands can't take temps in 30s or lower, even with bar mitts and heavy gloves). I ordered a small and a medium. The small was not too small, and the medium was not too big, so I went with the medium. Either had room for underlayers. The length is on the short side, and I truly appreciated that, since I'm on the short side too. Its true to size for a jacket, would be slightly big for a jersey.

De Marchi = Italian Style & Quality

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

If you're looking for a women's winter jacket, don't overlook the De Marchi Milano. The attention to detail is as impressive as the warmth it provides. I especially appreciate the front zipper pull which is easily found while wearing gloves and adds unique styling. I've worn the jacket with a short sleeve base layer in 30-40 degrees and have been very comfortable. An extra small might've been a slightly better fit but I haven't found the extra space in the torso to be an issue while riding. Regarding the color: I wouldn't call it purple, its more of a dark red. Merlot might be more accurate.

Stealthy cold-weather tech

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: small

This jacket is toasty warm and blocks wind like a champ, all while maintaining style that looks just as good at the post-ride coffee shop as it does out on the bike. I've worn it down to about 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit with a light baselayer, short-sleeved jersey, and bibtights (the De Marchi Corsas, which have some extra coverage over the upper body) underneath and stayed surprisingly warm throughout that mostly tree-shaded ride. With less layering underneath, this is a perfect outer layer up well into the 40's, depending on ride intensity.

The construction, as usual with De Marchi, is amazing, and the only thing that doesn't seem intuitively functional is the collar. When zipped fully, the front of the collar feels a bit stiff and uncomfortable against my throat, but I'm not sure how often I would wear this jacket fully zipped or without a neck buff (which usually means leaving the zipper down a couple of inches), so it's kind of a non-issue. On the back, the pockets are awesome - big enough to hold all the random things needed for a winter ride, but not so big that they sag or look bulky. De Marchi also does a great job of working in a decent amount of reflective elements without impacting the jacket's overall non-traditional cycling jacket style.

On fit, I'd say it runs true to the size chart and leans more to the side of euro sizing. I'm 5ft 8in, about 118lbs and have a size small, which works, but I definitely should have gone with a size smaller. It's just a bit too loose around the body and hem. That said, the construction and lines are so clean that it still sits well even though it's too big. An extra-small would probably fit perfectly.
