Eats fast trails for breakfast.

If you find that standing on top is more rewarding that sullenly swilling beers in the parking lot, the Continental Race King 29-inch Tire is for you. Providing a low-profile pattern that rolls fast and is able to handle just about any terrain or condition, the Race King is the perfect package for everyone to cross-country racers to the two-time World XC champion, Irina Kalentieva.

Part of the secret of the Race King's success lies in its remarkable tread. The rolled shoulder profile and diamond-head arrow center tread pattern is primarily designed for superb power transfer, while also maintaining a very low profile. And as a result, it rolls exceptionally fast. Continental also incorporated transitional knobs from the center to the shoulder of the tire. This way, when you're making quick weight transfers, from cornering to straight-ahead power and back again, the tire remains stable and secure beneath you. The shoulder knobs are low-profile, like the rest of the tread. And along the outer edge, the pattern is doubled with a ramped leading edge followed by a block tread — the ramps roll quickly, but the block bites into the dirt for increased traction.

Not only do the Race King tires shed mud like nobody’s business, but they also deliver bomb-proof performance on the nastiest, longest marathon rides. Continental included its ProTection technology with these tires, so you're able to enjoy the benefit of the smooth, yet gripp'y, treads. Even better, this also creates an enhanced level of puncture protection (hence the name). Continental also added an additional layer that encircles the tire in order to guard against punctures. And unlike puncture-resistant troughs in other brands' tires, this protection reaches wall-to-wall in order to resist damage all of the way around.

Continental has been careful to ensure that the added layer doesn't harden the feel and reduce the level of dampening comfort that it naturally provides. One reason that this is possible is because Continental heavily relies on its proprietary Black Chili rubber compound to help the tire be all things to all conditions. It's succeeded in making the tires grippier, tougher, and lighter on their treads. Essentially, the Continental engineers in Germany refined their synthetic rubbers with nano-sized carbon particles that create a compound that reacts to surface objects more quickly, improving grip. These particles also form a tight bond to improve compound strength, which lengthens tread life and reduces the chances that lugs will rip and tear. Compared to Continental's earlier-generation tire compound, Black Chili tires provide around 20% less rolling-resistance and 30% more grip, all while managing to improve tread life by 5%.

The Race King Protection is tubeless-ready and Continental recommends the use of its RevoSealant to protect against the odd mini puncture.

The Continental Race King 29-inch Tire is available with 2.2-inch width, and it has an ideal inflation level of between 50 and 65 PSI.

Rolls fast, but get the pressure right

The Continental Race King tires are great for xc racing when you want to roll fast. I've used them for Leadville the last couple of years, and they were great except when I smashed into a rock when they weren't quite inflated enough, which led to a series of flats. But when you have the setup dialed, the Race King is a great tire made for KOMs.

    Great XC tires

These tire worked flawlessly and got me through my first Leadville 100. Ran them tubeless with 29psi rear and 27psi front. Had stable predictable handling, good traction and great (low) rolling resistance. Most importantly no flats! And Leadville although not technical has some high speed very rocky sections. These replaced a set of Ardent race 2.2's and these seemed to have quite a bit less rolling resistance. I would definitely highly recommend these for fast XC style riding.

      "Bomb-proof performance"--not so much.

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These tires are described in part, "Even better, this also creates an enhanced level of puncture protection (hence the name)." No way. While the sidewalls seem beefier, my rear tire blew one out in LESS THAN 15 miles. I live in the desert and ride on rocky, prickly trails. But the only trail this tire saw was a 6' wide little-more-than-gravel road. Not only did the tire puncture, it split enough to spew RevoSealant all over the trail and cannot be salvaged. I'm hoping I just happened to get a defective tire. To cap off the bad taste in my mouth, after emailing my complaint to Competitive Cyclist, I got exactly nothing in return. No response. Crickets. Not even, "sorry, but these things happen".

      Awesome XC tire

The Race King is the way to go for hardpack XC courses. Moving to a Race King made my bike feel like a road bike on the smooth stuff. Durability is solid as well. Defiantly recommend!

        Great all around XC tires

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is one of the best all around XC tires out there. I ran mine tubeless at 25 psi for training and as low as 21 for races. The ProTection technology makes for a super solid tubeless set up, and these tires have excellent flat protection especially when compared to some ultra-thin XC tires. It's a fast-rolling tread that also holds amazing grip on rocks and in corners. I have yet to run them in really wet or muddy conditions. An ideal XC quiver for one season would be 2-3 sets of these and a pair of X-Kings for the mud.
