Grand Prix 5000 Tire

The all-new Grand Prix 5000 Tire from Continental is a worthy successor to its Grand Prix 4000 S II, a tire that stood atop its road clincher tire range for a dozen or so years and a favorite among cyclists worldwide. What made the GP4000 so universally loved was that it was truly a competition-worthy tire in terms of weight, grip, and rolling resistance, but unlike typical racing rubber, the tire was actually durable enough to fend off debris so you could train on it daily, while also lasting quite a while so you could rack up some miles before the threads began to show.

We'll start with its rubber compound as it continues to use Black Chili balance. The rubber compound is critical because it defines the tire's grip, rolling resistance, and longevity. Typically, you can't alter one without it affecting the other which is exactly where Black Chili shines. Using the latest knowledge of polymers and raw material research, Conti uses special synthetic rubbers along with proven natural rubber, creating a high-performance mixture. To it, it adds super-tiny carbon black particles, optimized in shape and surface properties.

The complex compound technology is so exclusive that Conti only manufactures tires using Black Chili compound in its Korbach, Germany plant. The tiny size of Black Chili particles allows them to mold to variable road surfaces more readily. It gives the tire greater ability to conform to imperfections in the road surface for excellent grip in demanding situations, such as high-speed cornering, while also reducing rolling resistance. Since the Black Chili particles are so small, more particles fit into the contact patch of the tire, reducing wear and increasing longevity.

Love them but impossible to remove

I've been a long time ( 5+ year ) conti GP rider and love them. Unfortunately, after being stuck out on the road for the third time I finally made the decision to switch brands. I almost never have issues with the tires - they perform well and are very reliable, but if they do flat, I can't change em. The bead is so tight that I have had to cut them off and use pliers on my last 2 sets. It could be the combination of wheels ( HED Ardennes ) and tires, but I never had this problem with the 4000s. I think it may be because these are now "tubeless ready". If you do buy them, I recommend you do a dry run and make sure you can break the bead on yours before you have to do it in the wild.

I replaced my Continental GP 4000 Clincher 23mm Tires with the newer Continental GP 5000 Clincher 25mm Tires with the idea of a softer and faster ride. My first impression is the tires feel quick but are a harder ride at the same 100 PSI. I will try different pressures within the recommended min/max range. From this cyclist's perspective this tire is pretty darn good. I have nearly 4000 miles on my first one, a 25mm clincher. Despite meeting with the usual road debris, broken pavement, rain, etc., in northeast Ohio, no issues. These roll just fine at 95-99 psi. Sure, you might get a puncture occasionally on the best of tires, but haven't yet with this one.

I have ridden these tires for over 1,000 miles with no flats and they are faster than the gatorskins i used before. I had purchased another brand as they were rated as faster. They were until they went flat after six miles. Flat again in 20 miles, Flat again at 32 miles. All on Florida Ironman.

I have run continental for years. I have conti 25mm, these were a replacement. i put it on and before i even inflated i thought "they look small" turns out these are about 23.5mm according to my caliper. my old continental 25mm on the front measures 25mm. the box says 25mm, the tire says 25mm. Not 25mm. BS

I have been using Conti’s for the last 5 years. I have about 1000 miles on the new 5000’s and love them so far. No issues mounting them or flatting. 4000 was a great tire and I have high hopes for the 5000. They’ve been in the rain a few times and done well.

This thing is bulletproof

I'm not sure where the others are coming from with their issues of punctures, but I've found these to be bulletproof in regards to glass. I've had some chance encounters with glass recently that I was sure was going to flat me, but I still was inflated after rolling through the broken glass. After the ride I inspected the tires, and although there were some substantial cuts in the outer rubber layer itself, it never made it through the under layer to the tube. One of the cuts was so long and deep I still cannot believe the tube didn't get punctured, and that the tube didn't start to "balloon" out the cut. I do run these at only 90 PSI (and I run the 25s) so maybe that's got something to do with it. But for me, these are bulletproof, comfortable and sticky, and I get around 2500 miles with them.

I've been using the Conti GP5000 for over a year now, with good service, durability, and performance. I have 2,700 miles on these and still have some tread remaining on the rear, based on the wear indicators. This is comparable to the GP4000S II that I had been using. No issues with punctures or tread/sidewall failures. They are a bit snug to install but not any worse than other tires.

If you don't like dealing with flats, avoid these things. I've run all iterations of Conti's GP tire for years (decades actually). In fact, they have been my almost-exclusive go-to tire for road cycling. The GP 4000 was almost perfect for my needs. Good performance, decent longevity, and very good puncture resistance. So, of course, they got rid of it. These GP 5000 tires seem like a big step backwards in the puncture-resistance department. In 6 months time, I've already had twice as many flats on a GP 5000 rear tire than I had in 5 years combined on a GP 4000. Same wheels, same bikes, same pressures, same roads ridden. I know that flats are often a function of "luck" but this is too much of an aberration to ignore. To me, they do not exhibit any more "performance" or comfort vs. the GP 4000 so I'm getting nothing in return...except for more flats. I guess it's finally time to see what other options are out there and leave Conti in the rear view. Oh, and yeah, the GP 5000 are a bit harder to mount than the older varieties, even on old-school (non TL compatible) rims like an Open Pro.

It’s just bad luck. I’ve ridden almost 4K miles this season on the GP 5000s without a single flat, but I might get three flats on my next three rides. There’s very little difference between the GP4000 and GP5000, they’re both great tires, but they’re both susceptible to flats, owing to their very light weight construction. I haven’t had any issues mounting the tires on Campy Zonda rims.

Good, not perfect tires

I like most everything about these tires, which I've used a lot on several different bikes. They're priced right, when on sale. They install nicely. They roll and perform great. What I *don't* like about them is that I've experienced more punctures on them than any other tire I ride on, somewhere between 3-5 flats. Would the exact same conditions that brought down my GP5000's also bring down any, most other tires? Maybe! You can never be sure. Still, it's hard for me to shake the psychology that sets in when you get so many punctures on any one brand/make.

These are my general use, high quality tires. I average between 100-120 miles a week, and have found these tires to be relatively durable, fast, and grippy. I don't think that they are quite as durable as the older gp4000sII; the rubber compound seems to wear a little faster, and shows more general ageing quicker than the gp4000sII, which appeared to wear like iron. Also, the newer tires don't feel as grippy as the old gp4000sII in the wet to me, though grip in the dry has been impeccable (knock on wood). Puncture resistance and overall quality seems about the same as the prior tires. The gp5000's casing in the 25mm size does seem slightly narrower than the older gp4000sII, yet the newer tires average 5-10g heavier than the older gp4000sII in the same size. Can't say I can discern any difference in "rolling resistance" between the new and old tires in real life. Overall, they are very good all-around fast tires, but other than updated graphics, I'm not sure that they are an improvement on the gp4000sII. Hence, the 4-star rating.

These tires mounted easily with bare hands. On the first ride I felt like I was flying. They must have a low rolling resistance. I rode these in the Mountains of North Carolina on vacation. They handled the fast descents well and I could corner with confidence. After about 500 miles of use I have to say these are some very good tires and am very pleased and impressed with them.

5000s - 4000s you are not

I trained and raced on 4000s for years and never had issues with quality or performance. This is now my 4th set of 5000s and I'm done. Two had side wall blowouts, and the other two developed bulges right down the center of the tread. A previous review points out that you should not over inflate the tires. Maybe that is my issue as I've been running 100 psi. So if these quality failures are due to over inflating then I suppose that is on me...but I'm still skeptical of the quality at this point. I also agree with another review that the 5000s are extremely difficult to get install...at least on my Hed rims. Makes changing a flat a huge pain in the saddle...particularly if you have a group waiting on you. I believe that all gear people are prone to brand loyalty to a fault, and I'm a perfect example of that. Fool me once...shame on you. Fool me 4 times...well it's time to go with a different brand.

I also almost could not get 5000 tire on my HED alum. rim. The 5000 is also not the same size as a 4000s when mounted. It is not as wide or tall in the 700-23 size. It looks more like a 700-21

I bought 28s to go a little wider. Difficult to get on Mavik aluminum rims. Once mounted, they only measured 26 mm, which is narrower than my GP4000sII at 27 mm. Sent them back.

I have been a Continental fan for years and have put thousands of miles on the previous 4000's and have now worn out several pairs of 5000's. I am not sure of mileage, I don't really keep track but I consider this a durable tire. I live in Eastern WA where tack weeds are prevalent and Continental GP tires have been better than any other tire I have used for puncture resistance. I do still have the occasional flat, especially when tread starts to wear but usually means it's time for a new tire. I train and race with this tire and feel it performs very well.

Impossible to Install

Tire was nearly impossible to install on my wheels. I had to force it on with with a tire lever and ended up puncturing two tubes in the process before I finally gave up. I have never had this issue before with Michelin tires or with the GP 4000 tire. The GP 4000 tires worked great for me but the tolerance is way too tight on these tires.

This is a very fast rolling tire with Spider-Man like tackiness. However... you must NOT over-inflate this tire for your weight and rim width. Higher pressure with this tire destroys it making it more prone to flatting, cuts and failures and also looses its tackiness and speed. I typically run no more than 90 to 93 psi on my 25c tires on wide carbon rims with tubes (I weigh 148lbs). In the old days, pumping tires up to 110-120 was thought to produce faster riding, this theory has completely changed. Bigger wider rims and tires with lower pressure are faster, better handling, less prone to flats and failures and last longer. The more you weigh the wider you should go with your tires and rims so that you can maintain a lower pressure on a larger volume setup and avoid pinch flats. By the way, I have never had a pinch flat on my setup and I ride over 7000 per year. This is currently my goto tire on all of our road bikes.

Same with me. I've put in about 2000 miles YTD since I got these tires and haven't had any issues. Very grateful of that, but I'm also not sure if all the reviews come from people who are incorrectly installing them...

The GP5000 in a 700x25 size has a maximum inflation rating of 120 psi. If the tires are failing at or near that pressure they are defective. I run my tires at about the same pressure you run yours, but a tire designed to handle up fo 120 psi should hold up at 120 psi.

Wow 90+ psi seems a bit high, but hey that's your preference. I weigh 10 lbs less than you and run 68/72 psi. You could consider lowering the pressure about 12psi for a smoother ride.
