Description

Like the outgoing GP4000 S, Continental's Grand Prix 4000 S II Clincher Tire continues to use Black Chili, but now has Vectran technology to boost puncture protection. Vectran is a multi-fiber thermoplastic yarn that is made from a liquid crystal polymer.

Claimed to be stronger than steel, this offers additional resistance to penetration from road debris while being ultralight. Combined with Continental's Black Chili rubber compound, super-tiny carbon black particles incorporated into the rubber formula, the GP4000 S II is versatile enough for race wheels or training wheels.

The tiny size of Black Chili particles allows them to mold to variable road surfaces more readily. It gives the tire greater ability to conform to imperfections in the road surface for excellent grip in demanding situations—such as high speed cornering—while also reducing rolling resistance. Since the Black Chili particles are so small, more particles fit into the contact patch of the tire, reducing tire wear and increasing tire longevity.

This tire has been great. They aren't kidding about the puncture resistances, although I have gotten a couple of flats, I didn't struggle a bit getting the tire on and off which is always relieving. I have had multiple sets and I don't think I'll have the need to roll anything else.

    Absolutely love these tires, use them as both a training and race tire. They do not come as a pair, so make sure to grab 2 of them. A little bit on the higher priced end, but well worth it.

    25mm is the new 23mm. The larger wheel is noticeably more comfortable than the popular 23 of yesterday. The increased rolling resistance is also negligible so no need to worry there. Solid tire choice for racing or training.

    Why go tubeless?

    These tires roll just as well and grip just as well as a tubeless setup. Don't deal with sealant and get these race ready clincher tires! Especially if your bike will accommodate 25mm tires. Warning these puff up a bit wider on most wheels. I have raced these for three seasons and as my skills on the Crit course progressed these tire kept my grounded. Made with Black Chili " keep the the rubber side down" compound you can rail corners and get to the finishing sprint faster than your race companions. Hope your not afraid of heights, you'll often be on the top step with these tires installed on your race wheels.

        First new tires I ever bought

        I *finally* bought new tires for my road bike. I was doing the ole' i can get a few more miles out of these bit. Granted I've put more miles in this year that i have in the previous 6 years - it was long overdue! These were recommended by a friend and I do not regret the decision. I ride in NYC out on 9W and these hold up great through the city streets (seriously there's glass and shit everywhere in this city - its hard to always see it and avoid it). Been riding on them for the last 6-8 weeks ~400+ miles and not a single issue.

        Purchased these for my road bike with 55mm carbon rims. I ride varied road surfaces, race, long fondos, and just for fun and also have these same tires on my Tri bike. I've had the 23 mm as well and these feel like they ride a bit better, but that is just feel. I've ran them at 90 psi. Pretty rough getting them on the rims but that's common I undertstand with these tires when reading reviews and my experience. No puncture issues whatsoever and they feel pretty fast. I've always gotten well over 2k miles on these tires. Buy with confidence.

        I Am Going to Have to Give These an "A"

        If companies would drop all the superlatives and tell the truth, they would get better grades in school. However, as they come out with all the VooderSpraken, and if that widget does not go pop, fizz and zaggle, then they are going to take their C+ home to their mum. This tire is an exception. I am 63 years old, how would you feel about your grandfather turning a racing bicycle at 35 miles an hour in the rain on tires that "might" hold that road? Ops, it rained, oh well. These tires are the best all rounders I have ever put to a set of rims. My carbon fiber bicycle is fantastic, but it in truth doesn't really like going over 35mph. At 35mph my bicycle starts to turn into a government worker. That is where it starts to do the Hula. Oh, don't get me wrong; it keeps going, but I don't get too squirrely with it. My insurance against that is this set of tires. Brilliant, and you have to look at how Continental worked the margins to achieve this performance. I will give you a hint. Everybody knows that wind can hit a tire head-on. Okay, what happens when the bicycle is in a turn, heeled over like a 20 million dollar yacht, and the wind, - weird, is actually hitting the tire from the side? If all the tires are designed to "head into the wind" then what happens if one tire company works those numbers like a Japanese high school student trying to get into Tokyo University, and thus also works to maximize aerodynamic efficiency when the bicycle is laid over at speed like a 4 weight fly rod hooked into a King Salmon? In the straights, about the same, yet in the turn, who is going to exit every turn with an X% advantage? Look at the tire closely and their solutions are simple, but pure genius.

        Rides nice, when not flat

          I replaced my OEM Trek/Bontrager tires after about 1500 miles with these. First ride was awesome - felt super fast, good handling, pliant ride.

          But then the flats set in. 3 flats (one because I didn't patch the gash soon enough), on both front and rear (3 total) in the first ~400 miles. Same roads I'd been riding on the OEMs without a single puncture. Not gnarly roads either - sure the usual collection of crud on/near the shoulder/bike lane.

          Anyway, if you like repairing flats these are great tires. If you want a bit more durability, consider other options.

          I have ridden these tires for over 8,000 miles through crap New England roads(including winters). Only one slow flat that I discovered in my garage the next morning. The above reviewer either ran through a section w glass shards(or something else) without realizing.....where any tire would have taken damage...or he is not pumping his tires before every ride to run proper pressure like you are meant to...or he is an unusually heavy rider combined with either of the 2 mentioned possibilities. No way to know for sure obviously.

          What is known for sure is these tires are the pinnacle of great balance between performance/grip, low rolling resistance, and more importantly durability. Not fair to hold anything against this tire because of a one off circumstance. Every road rider is going to get a flat from time to time regardless of the tire, but 3 flats on this set of tires under the first 400 miles....something else is def going on there. I've been riding for about 7 years on these tires and the previous version. About 3,000mi a year. In those 7 years I have had 2 total flats. These are great tires and very durable. We are all entitled to our own opinions but I could not lay off this one. 3 flats in under 400 miles. Something else is definitely going on there!

          These are my favorite road bike tires. I have gone on countless century rides with these with minimal flats. It's a good balance between flat protection and performance. I have a stock of these tires and only these tires for my road bike. For bulletproof super heavy touring tires, I have the Schwalbe Marathon Plus in 700x35mm.

          I use these on my race wheels as well as my training wheels and they are great! I have had very few flats and they seem to hold up great, won't be switching it up anytime soon.

          I don't want these tires on my wheels anymore, the rolling resistance is so low I felt I'm taking too much advantage against my club riders who are not using these tires. I gave other brands a try but I kept coming back to these tires... the durability is outstanding comparing to others.

          To echo many of the reviews here, I believe these are the best all-around tire available. They've got confidence-inspiring grip, solid durability, and wear better than any tire I've ever used. No other tire checks as many boxes as well as the venerable GP 4000S II.
