It's a shame that cyclocross bikes are sometimes conglomerations of various castaway parts from last year's racing bike. If yours is the exception -- if you take your cyclocross and your cyclocross bike seriously -- then the Continental Cyclocross Race Clincher is the tire for you.

With 180tpi, it has a finer thread count than Continental's Speed King, offering a more refined ride. And when you're doing the most grueling 60 minutes of your season, wouldn't a tubular-like feel be welcome? The increase in comfort comes without sacrifice. The Cyclocross Race Clincher has a low rolling resistance as well. The center knobs have a stepped structure, giving them structure to avoid straight-line squirm in the fast sections of the course as you hammer away towards the next corner, barrier, or sand pit. And of course, it will be muddy. For that, the Race Clincher has a slight taper on the transition and shoulder knobs so they'll penetrate the mud for great traction and self-clean as they roll up and away from the ground, leaving more of it down there and less of it flinging up into your eyes.

Pretty Good

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Use these for commuting on road and paved bike trails in conditions which are often wet and rainy. They work pretty well for this.

My only complaint is that they wear faster than I would like... but as another reviewer noted, these are not really meant to be pavement tires.

Okay for commuting or spare tire

I have these tires on my CX bike which use from time to time to commute on and for cx races. For commuting on the road and dry trail conditions these tries are pretty good value. The seem to wear on the road a little fast but that is to be expected since these are ment to be CX tires. As for the cx racing part these tires in anything less than ideal dry conditions are pretty lousiy. The dont hold an edge very confidently on off camber areas and if corners are somewhat slick you may just either except the fact your not going to be able to get around like the other guy with proper tires or your going down. With that said its my own fault for not having a better selection of tires to use for other conditions but a dry condition tire should still be able to hold an edge on dry slighly off camber sections.

So my take-aways from this is good ecomomical commuter tire or dry condition race tire. But if your serious about racing do yourself a favor and spend a little extra on a good set of tires. I know i will the next time

Great commuter, 'cross backup

I bought these tires for a set of clincher cyclocross wheels and foul weather commuter tires. I did a cyclocross race on them in dry conditions, and they worked well. As with any clincher, it can be tough to get the pressure low without risking pinching, but they rolled well and had sufficient grip. I would recommend going with a tubular setup for cross, but for commuting, these are great. They roll fairly smoothly on pavement, and offer a little extra cushion which is a welcome feature on rough pavement while commuting.
