Aggressive terrain ahead.
Challenge has already shown its dedication to providing cyclocross riders with gravel-specific options, and when the Italian company saw room for another offering, it expanded its gravel line to include the Gravel Grinder Clincher Tire. Developed with longer hard-pack and loose gravel races in mind, the tire is made with vulcanized natural rubber for more suppleness and grip than stiffer artificial rubber. Its high volume also contributes to a plush ride while increasing durability compared to Challenge's other gravel-minded options.
The Gravel Grinder features a center file tread paired with raised side knobs for low rolling resistance on straights confident traction while cornering. Expecting — and encouraging — rough riding conditions, Challenge also reinforces the nylon casing on the Gravel Grinder with its Double Puncture Protection System (PPS2) to get you through your rides and races without losing time changing flats. While it's also available in a tubular version, the open tubular clincher model was designed to be the best option for cyclists racing on aggressive terrain. The Gravel Grinder fits on most rims measuring between 17 and 23mm wide (though its healthy girth recommends it most on the wide end of that spectrum), and weighs in at a claimed 375g.

Has anyone tried to mount these up tubeless? I know it's not spec to, but curious if anyone had luck doing so.
Jack of all trades
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
The Gravel Grinder tires exceeded all of my expections. First off, the small/minimal knobs in the center allow for low rolling resistance on pavement and hard pack dirt. Then the edge knobs provide traction in loose corners.
Besides working well on pavement and gravel, the Grinders actually work very well on buff singletrack. They also have great flat protection and decent durability.
I do wish that these were tubeless compatible, which would allow for lower tire pressure when riding trail.
great for dirt crits
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
most early season cross races are basically dirty crits. This is a great tyre for that. good studs on the sides with fast rolling center
