Description

R2 Ultegra R8000 Road Bike

When we reunited with Cervélo, we felt like we finally reconnected with a long-lost friend. The brand never wavered when it came to stiff carbon, and performance-driven geometry, which was easy to spot when we saw teams like World Tour Sunweb saddling up on the coveted steeds. The progressive geometry carries on with the newest generation of cycles, and the Cervélo R2 Ultegra R8000 Road Bike continues to excel with stunning craftsmanship to excel on the tarmac, push through pelotons, or crush your PR's on a race against your previous self. Cervélo may emit nostalgic thoughts, but the brand was founded just in 1995 (which wasn't so long ago for some of us), and might not have quite the rich history as some of the established Euro brands, however, it's more than made up for the lost time with its palmarès, amassing impressive victories in stages and the GC overall at the Tour, the cobbles of Roubaix, World Championships, and on the world-platform at the 'Games.

Cervélo's R-Series bikes have always been known to possess impressive stiffness to weight numbers and the R2 is no different. It pays careful attention to the lateral stiffness at the bottom bracket, thanks to its BBright design, and the torsional stiffness at its tapered head tube and fork which creates a bike that surges forward on out of the saddle climbs and tracks on rails during sinuous canyon descents. It's quick acceleration and confidence-inspiring handling is simply addictive and will have you pushing your limits. When designing frames, Cervélo consistently tests in the lab until tube shapes and materials meet the desired metrics, then it's verified by its test riders on the road. This serves to verify that the right amount of stiffness is achieved without making the frame so stiff that it's less comfortable and it lets engineers know if it can relieve excess material without affecting responsiveness or durability.

As a frameset that’s designed to excel in the high mountain stages, as well as the brutal cobble classics, the stiff and light R2 is a godsend on steep, extended climbs and descents, and while not as out-and-out aero as its S-Series lineup, tube shapes and internal cable routing serve as aero tricks up its sleeve when you're driving off the front of the pace line. For more comfort and grip, it clears tires up to 28mm wide and it even has a chain catcher ensuring you won't drop your chain as you sprint for county-line glory on a rural, chip-seal road.

Cervélo is never one to rest on its laurels and constantly scrutinizes materials, shapes, and layups in an effort to boost stiffness, improve ride quality, and drop grams. Compared to previous generation R2s, this version is 12 percent stiffer at the head tube and has a 10 percent increase in fork lateral stiffness, for stable and predictable handling, and it's 5 percent stiffer at the bottom bracket to channel all of your power directly to your rear wheel.

Returning Cervélo features include its BBright bottom bracket and Squoval tubing. It developed the wider BBright standard in an effort to increase stiffness by taking advantage of the real estate at the bottom bracket shell, seat tube, down tube, and chainstay. Additionally, it plays well with all major crank standards. Squoval tubing allows the design engineers the ability to use the best attributes of a square and oval shape to improve the bike's ride quality while minimizing weight and maximizing stiffness.

Cervélo bills the R2's geometry as its Elite Fit Road, slotting in right between its Pro Fit Road on the R5 and S-Series bikes, and the Endurance Fit of its C-Series bikes. As such, it focuses on efficiency an allows for an easy setup of a variety of fits without compromising on comfort. Sure, its aggressive enough to race on, and often is, but not so much so that it's uncomfortable on all-day jaunts or 3-week tours.

We build up this particular R2 with cherry picked components that are some of our favorites here in office, including the power-house Shimano Ultegra groupset that provides crisp shifting, and near Dura-Ace weights, without the hefty price tag. This is partnered up with Mavic Ksyrium UST wheels that reduce rolling resistance with their UST tubeless setup, which deliver performance from over 125-years of honed racing history, and offer a system in which tires and rims work in unison for improved flat resistance, and easier tubeless setups. Finally, Zipp Service Course tops you off with a comfortable cockpit that keeps you perched for the attack.

  • Race yourself, or attack the peloton with Cervélo's elite road steed
  • Progressive Fit Road geometry is efficient without being too aggressive
  • Shimano's Ultegra group is a powerhouse of clean shifting and strength
  • Frame construction and materials maximize the stiffness to weight
  • Squoval tube shapes improve ride quality, responsiveness, and aerodynamics
  • Tapered headtube helps the bike track on high-speed descents
  • BBright bottom bracket shell channels pedaling input directly into the rear wheel
  • Cervélo continues to build some of the most technologically advanced framesets in the peloton

still got it

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I hadn't ridden a Cervelo frame in over 6 years. I finally got to get on the newest R series with an ultegra build this summer and spend some time on it. In the back of my mind I think I was afraid that they would rest on the great bikes they'd made and it would be the same frame, they definitely are not. There are lighter frames than the R (and heavier) but it climbs very nimble. Handling was excellent, as has always been, and even better than previous generations. Bottom bracket is stiff, you can crank on it hard and it gets to the wheels. The fit is comfortable, not overly aggressive, I slammed the stem and was able to get in race position just fine. Ride quality has come a long way and the R series has that as well. With such a firm frame it's good to have a bike you can ride for more than 50 miles and not pay for it. I would definitely recommend taking a serous look at the R2, the Cervelo bike look great on top of all that, very clean, simple. If you have any questions or want comparisons on it feel free to contact me here.
