R2 Road Frameset

There was a time when BBRight ruled here at Competitive, and while there was a bit of a hiatus, we're pleased as punch to be back ontop of Cervélo's elite machines again, and the R2 Road Frameset just begs for us to dream up the perfect build, and take to the tarmac. The performance-driven designs we've seen from Cervélo haven't taken a break, ensuring its sponsored racers on the World Tour Team Sunweb — and you — have the ability to soar forward with a balance that tickles the boarders between speed and comfort. While the brand's heritage only goes back to the 90's, and may not hold the same nostalgia as some of the other Euro brands, it doesn't seem to let that hold it back. The brand has amassed impressive victories in the Tour, Grand Tours, World Championships, and the big O'Games. And perhaps one of our favorite things about Cervélo is that the brand isn't stingy about its technology through its line. It trickles things down, ensuring that the R2 is treated with impressive geometry that we see in the R3, but with a more affordable carbon layup that lets you save some dimes for the perfect component setup.

As a frameset that’s designed to excel in the high mountain stages, as well as the brutal cobble classics, the stiff and light R2 is a godsend on steep, extended climbs and descents, and while not as out-and-out aero as its S-Series lineup, tube shapes and internal cable routing serve as aero tricks up its sleeve when you're driving off the front of the pace line. For more comfort and grip, it clears tires up to 28mm wide and it even has a chain catcher ensuring you won't drop your chain as you sprint for county-line glory on a rural, chip-seal road.

Cervélo is never one to rest on its laurels and constantly scrutinizes materials, shapes, and layups in an effort to boost stiffness, improve ride quality, and drop grams. Compared to previous generation R2s, this version is 12 percent stiffer at the head tube and has a 10 percent increase in fork lateral stiffness, for stable and predictable handling, and it's 5 percent stiffer at the bottom bracket to channel all of your power directly to your rear wheel.

Cervélo's R-Series bikes have always been known to possess impressive stiffness to weight numbers and the R2 is no different. It pays careful attention to the lateral stiffness at the bottom bracket, thanks to its BBright design, and the torsional stiffness at its tapered head tube and fork which creates a bike that surges forward on out of the saddle climbs and tracks on rails during sinuous canyon descents. It's quick acceleration and confidence-inspiring handling is simply addictive and will have you pushing your limits. When designing frames, Cervélo consistently tests in the lab until tube shapes and materials meet the desired metrics, then it's verified by its test riders on the road. This serves to verify that the right amount of stiffness is achieved without making the frame so stiff that it's less comfortable and it lets engineers know if it can relieve excess material without affecting responsiveness or durability.

Returning Cervélo features include its BBright bottom bracket and Squoval tubing. It developed the wider BBright standard in an effort to increase stiffness by taking advantage of the real estate at the bottom bracket shell, seat tube, down tube, and chainstay. Additionally, it plays well with all major crank standards. Squoval tubing allows the design engineers the ability to use the best attributes of a square and oval shape to improve the bike's ride quality while minimizing weight and maximizing stiffness.

Cervélo bills the R2's geometry as its Elite Fit Road, slotting in right between its Pro Fit Road on the R5 and S-Series bikes, and the Endurance Fit of its C-Series bikes. As such, it focuses on efficiency an allows for an easy setup of a variety of fits without compromising on comfort. Sure, its aggressive enough to race on, and often is, but not so much so that it's uncomfortable on all-day jaunts or 3-week tours.
