Description

Everything You Need, Nothing You Don't.

We've always been told it's better to start off cold rides a little chilly, then warm up. That way you don't overheat, become a sweaty mess, and end up freezing. We prefer not to be cold on the bike ever and luckily, Castelli feels the same way. Working with their professional athletes, it created a jacket that's designed to excel at moderate intensities in cooler conditions or higher intensities in cold conditions. The Men's Velocissimo 2 Jacket utilizes Gore Windstopper X-Fast to balance excellent insulation properties, repel the elements, and offer breathability for when we warm up.

Castelli recommends the Velocissimo 2 in temperatures ranging from 43 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything warmer than 60 is a touch warm with this jacket but if it's overcast and windy, you'll most likely be fine. The front and sleeves are constructed with Gore Windstopper X-Fast fabric that repel water and block wind while breathing quite well. Castelli chose their soft Warmer fabric along the back of the jacket, adding warmth while still allowing breathability to prevent overheating. The Velocissimo's form-fitting silhouette accommodates a baselayer and feels more like a long-sleeve jersey than a jacket. As we've come to expect with most of Castelli's clothing, the fit is engineered for use in a riding position and the fit off the bike will feel slightly awkward.

One of our favorite features is the flip-up Thermoflex collar. When pedaling into a headwind or descending, it's great flipped up and while climbing or doing intervals it can be turned down for less coverage. The silicone gripper along the waist keeps the garment from riding up and the stretchy Thermoflex side panels add breathability and ease of movement. Rear reflective tabs keep you visible in low-light conditions while three rear pockets provide storage for nutritional necessities and money for a coffee stop.

  • A jacket for perfect bluebird days
  • Form-fitting cut is more jersey and less jacket
  • Wind- and water-resistant front with breathable backside
  • Stretchy side panels breathe and allow excellent movement
  • Flip-up collar provides further protection from the wind
  • Jacket is ideal for temps in the 40s and low-50s

Perfect colder weather outer garment

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 3XL

I purchased this for rides in the 40s and low 50s and so far it has met the need very nicely. It combines wind stopper fabric in the right places with breathable panels and they prevent overheating. I've worn it with a long-sleeved base layer and a polypro T-shirt underneath on a windy day in the mid 40s and was perfectly comfortable. I really like the three back pockets like a regular jersey so I don't have to dig underneath my outer layer for items. I bought the orange and black version and everyone commented how visible I am -- immediately identifiable (so I have to behave). I'm 6'3", 215 lbs. and bought the 3XL per Castelli's size chart. It fits just right, snug but not restrictive.

Best Jacket for Cycling

I have many jackets, but this is by far the very best at its intended design -- riding. I use it mostly for MTB here in the high (& windy) desert of CA. Simply put, its like putting on a perfect fitting merino sock on your cold feet. Stylish, functional, and comfortable. Many jackets hit one of those attributes, but none top this Castelli in all 3 categories. Period. Kudos to them for the neat collar trick to keep both the sun and howling winds at bay -- and off your neck. Only minor quibble....it has caused a low level tug of war between my wife and I -- now i have to hide this jacket from her!

    Great Gear!!!

    • Fit: True to size

I recommended 100% , I rode on 34 deg. and worked perfect, keep you warm and comfortable.

    Another Castelli winner!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Another great Castelli product. Feels like a jersey but works like a jacket. Nice snug fit. I have worn it twice: 36 degree day with light winds. Used 2 very light baselayers. 40 degree day, windy with one heavy baselayer. I bought it hoping to bridge the gap between Gabba jersey's and my heavy Castelli winter jacket, and so far looks perfect. I am 5-9 145 lbs, medium fits perfect.

    jersey like feel with insulation

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

This definitely has a race fit construction to it, fitting snug in all areas of the jacket. It has the feel like a jersey with some extra insulation. The large fits almost perfectly, with some extra slack on my forearms and wrists. In comparison to other Castelli jackets, it fits pretty true to size keeping the race fit in mind. Slightly awkward walking around a bit restricted, but you feel locked in a riding position. This would be a nice piece for some hard efforts in the mid 40’s or cruising moderately in the low 50’s. It has room for one base layer and could probably keep you warm enough during an intense ride around 40. It is plenty breathable with stretchy side panels and the ability to release heat. It has Gore Windstopper fabric in the front so it has the properties to protect from the wind. It is snug at the jackets ends (waist, sleeves, and collar) not letting any cool air in. I love the flip up collar in the event of getting chilly. It is a perfect jacket for a dry windy day in the 40-55 range. Overall, it is great for the dry, cold weather and with a slim but mobile fit.
