Vela Vest

Ever since the Gabba swept through the peloton, Castelli has been the go-to for weather-resistant cycling kit. In order to one-up itself, the brand went were no cyclist has gone before: the sea. The crafty Italians recently got their hands on some of the threads used in the sails on world-class racing yachts, material that's strong enough to stop wind, block water, and propel a boat while doing it. The result is the Men's Vela Vest, which is named for the Latin word for a ship's sail. The Vela situates that maritime wonder material on the front panel, between you and the elements, for a completely weatherproof barrier that still packs down to less than a half pocket when the sun comes back out from behind the clouds.

The material at the Vela's heart is called Dyneema, and in addition to sails and this vest, it also feature in climbing ropes and bulletproof vests. Given those applications in particular, you might assume that it's what people turn to when failure really isn't an option. You'd be right. And that's part of the reason why it makes sense here. We should disclaim that, when we imply that it's the nuclear option in anti-weather fabric, we mean it—and that does mean it won't breath as well as your tissue-thin summer jersey.

To offset the Dyneema-equipped protection, Castelli builds in panels of stretchy, breathable material on the sides and rear in order to help keep the internal climate from turning into a clammy, boggy swamp during hard efforts or when the storm relents. This is particularly useful when the bottom half of a descent is warm enough that you don't need the protection but damp and winding enough that you can't spare a hand to fiddle with the zipper.

Finally, and though we mention it above, the Vela's pack-ability is worth another call-out. It compacts down to about half a man's palm, so when we say it fits in half a jersey pocket, we're erring on the side of understatement. More a like a third of a pocket, meaning you have more room for gloves, warmers, headbands, and any other accessories you find yourself wishing you'd left in the kit drawer.

  • A weatherproof cycling vest that packs down to nothing
  • Wind- and waterproof material keeps the elements at bay
  • When compacted, occupies less than half a jersey pocket
  • Race-ready fit eliminates flapping material
  • Side panels of breathable, DWR-treated fabric ventilate
  • Full-length zipper for emergency heat dumps on climbs
  • Reflective details help draw attention in low-light conditions
  • Castelli continues to redefine our expectations for inclement weather kit

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Affordable, effective, durable; pick one

I've used it several times

For the amount of pocket space it consumes, this vest works great, and the construction is nicely form-fitting and elastic, despite the sail material being completely rigid. However after about 10 uses I started to notice microtears in the sail material, so I'm worried I'll not get more than a single season of use from it. I'm not sure what the problem is. Perhaps the tears come from attempting to stuff it into small spaces, getting it caught on zippers, etc. But if it's meant to be packable, then packing it shouldn't cause it to break.

The best

I've put it through the wringer

Very ligh and with the best warm/weight ratio. Despite strong lateral wind, I didnt notice disturbing sound The fitting is a litle bit small, as castellis use to be, and its look awesome.

Not for everyone

The construction, and fit are typical Castelli, which is to say excellent. And it packs down to almost nothing, as promised. My problem with this vest is the Dyneema material. I'm sure it's strong, windproof, and waterproof like the description says, but it feels, looks, and sounds like a vest made of a plastic tarp; literally. If you don't mind the wearing-a-garbage-bag look and feel, and want the purported excellent protection I have no doubts this vest is for you. It's not for me though.

Unique jacket

This is like no other jacket I have seen. The dyneema is like an extremely strong and thin material that feels bulletproof. I can see why it is applied in bullet proof vests, absolutely no water or wind will seep through this layer. It reminds me of a wax paper as it is smooth and strong, but more flexible and soft. Nonetheless, it is extremely lightweight and is made for the when the weather takes a turn for the worse. I was skeptical of the appearance until I put it on and was surprised at the comfort. With the combination of flexible and breathable DWR fabric on the sides, it’s a vest that could be used with versatility. It is a race fit that could easily be worn over a soft shell or base layer. Extremely light weight. I like how the dyneema is double layered around the collar for extra protection. It could be stuffed in a jersey pocket without feeling like a softball attached to your back. It features reflective striped lines around the jersey which adds a nice touch. For someone that is looking for an ultra lightweight, packable outer shell that will keep you protected from the rain and wind, this is one of the best options on the market. While peculiar at first sight as it crunches loudly as it is removed from the package, it will do exactly what you need - protect you from the elements. You will definitely draw some attention wearing this vest. Perfect shell for the gram counters and minimalists.

Runs small

This vest will keep you warm on those cool spring and fall days, when you just need a little extra for the big rippin' descent. Plus, just think of all the attention you'll get when you wear this vest out to the club and the lights reflect onto the dance floor.

I see the size guide. Do you need to size up from what the chart says?
