Description

Balanced.

Winter cycling tends to involve a lot of compromises in kit choice, but the Rosso Corsa label on Castelli's Spettacolo Gloves is an assurance that those compromises don't have to affect one of the most vulnerable parts of your body: your hands. The Spettacolo balances bulk with bar-feel, striking a Rosso Corsa-approved balance of insulated warmth while still maintaining the ability feel your hoods and shift levers. This balance is important because operating shift and brake levers requires a certain amount of digit dexterity, but once your hands get cold on a ride, the only way to warm them is to stop riding altogether.

The Spettacolo owes its relatively slim construction to Castelli's material choices. The outer material is GORE's Windstopper X-Fast, which comes from the same family of anti-weather fabrics used in the revolutionary Gabba/Perfetto series. The Windstopper shell is paired with a Polartec fleece lining. This design doubles-up on low-bulk insulation rather than plumping-out with a single layer of fluff. The wind- and waterproof GORE outer layer means that the lack of high-loft fill doesn't result in cold hands 10 minutes into a two hour ride, because it preserves your microclimate so the insulation isn't constantly playing catch-up.

Castelli recommends the Spettacolo in temperatures ranging from 35-55 degrees Fahrenheit. Many of us typically find that Castelli's recommended temperatures err on the side of caution by tending toward the warm side, so we often use items like the Gabba or Perfetto in weather several degrees lower than Castelli's recommendations. However, when it comes to winter cycling gloves, we don't like tempting fate by ignoring those prescribed limitations; as mentioned above, once you cross into cold-hands territory, it's a pain in the ass to get back to comfort.

The synthetic leather palm is finished with a silicone grip pattern, which helps maintain grip in the kind of damp conditions where the waterproof Windstopper shells really comes in handy, and the fingertips terminate in touchscreen-compatible inserts. Chances are good that the insulating Thermoflex cuff will be under a winter jacket's sleeve, but Castelli leaves nothing to chance by ensuring that, even if you're long-of-limb, any exposed wrist gaps are minimized.

  • Winter cycling gloves that balance bulk with bar feel
  • GORE Windstopper X-Fast fleece is wind- and waterproof
  • Polartec lining adds an additional layer of insulation
  • Synthetic palm with silicone grip maintains grip
  • Touchscreen-compatible fingertips
  • Stretch cuff extends insulation to reduce gaps
  • Castelli's Rosso Corsa represents the zenith of Italian cycling craftsmanship

Good Fit & Warm to Boot!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: X-Lg

The extra-large Spettacolo gloves were a perfect fit for me – I have relatively large feet (size 13) & hands and generally fall between large and extra-large gloves, depending on the manufacturer. So l suppose the general fit is somewhat on the small side, but not crazily so.
I have several pairs of gloves for road riding in the winter, and needed something to fill the gap between my heavy-duty pair and my just-under-50° gloves. Bingo! These nicely fit the bill.

Real happy after a full winter of use

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

Full winter riding with temps down to what the glove is rated for at 35 degrees. This is great for someone who's historically had issues with their hands getting cold. The touch screen compatibility is also a nice feature so you don't have to take the glove off.

Love these gloves

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

I have been riding daily all winter with these gloves, down to about 25 degrees. They are comfortable to freezing but below that you'll get cold after about 30 minutes. My hands get too hot above 45. They look good, are comfortable, and block the wind well.

Excellent winter gloves

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

These are great winter gloves. Excellent warmth to bulk/weight ratio. Great body heat control -- the hands tend to stay sweat free. I've used them down to 25F and hands stayed warm. For me they would be too warm for 40F+. Very grippy palms. Comfortable overall, except I find the cuff to be too tight to get it over the jacket sleeve which is the way I prefer to wear gloves (unless it's raining). They run very small, even compared to Castelli's other gloves so size up 1 or 2 sizes.

Too warm for above freezing weather

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XXL

The only thing worse than cold fingers is wet and cold fingers. Don't get me wrong, these are great gloves, warm without being bulky and no road feel but almost too warm. At anything much above freezing my hands sweat in these, especially on long climbs and then they get cold. So as a cold weather glove, awesome. The only major niggle is that then can be a bit fussy to get on and off, particularly when your hands are sweaty or wet. As usual with Castelli go up 1 or 2 sizes. I got the XXL which fits great vs. my non-Castelli L to XL in gloves.

Outstanding Gloves

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

I've used these gloves in the 30's on 3-4 hour rides and have remained comfortable. Above 45 and they are warm, and tolerable. I've had many cold weather gloves, and these by far have proven to be the best when the temperature is 30-45 degrees, so stop wasting money and get a pair.

I'm happy with these winter gloves

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

I have other Castelli gloves for cool fall and spring temps, but needed something for very cold winter days. I wore these for a two-hour end of year ride on a damp 27F day, and my fingers stayed comfortable. On a previous ride they were great in the 30s and comfortable until the temp hit the mid 40s, then my hands started sweating so I removed them for the remaining 3-hours...my fault for not bringing lighter gloves to change mid-ride. I love the fit (my hands are skinny and long), but am guessing most people would need to size up 1-2 sizes to be happy. They grip the bars well -- that was vital to me in my glove search.

These are awesome!

These are so comfortable and keep my hands much warmer than my gloves w/o Windstopper. Hopefully they hold up. Worth every penny!

    Decent, but could be better

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: large

I bought these to use on 5:30am training rides in the fall/winter. They run a bit small. If one is close to the limit of a size, definitely move to the bigger size. My hand measures 8.5" and the large is a tight fit.
Fingers are a little long. The have a non-adjustable thin cuff around the wrist that was designed to go under a jacket. It's a tight fit and I find I have to do some messing around to get it to lay flat under my jersey (Gabba 2) or jacket. Palm is grippy and bar feel is good.

The temperature range given by Castelli is accurate. Riding tempo on the road, these are good to the mid to upper 30's. I've ridden them down to 28F, but the tips of my middle and ring fingers got pretty cold.

Overall, good, but not great. If they could have taken the CW3.1 (the ultimate cycling glove) and come up with something that worked at lower temperatures, that would have been perfect.

    Warm and comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This gloves are everything they are supposed to be. I took them out on the two coldest days thus far (20 and 32 degrees) they kept my hands and fingers warm. I did not feel any wind and they do a marginal job at operating my phone. Things to note, typically with anything Castelli you have to go one size up if your an American. But I took the gamble and ordered a large. They fit perfectly, I know I am not a medium in gloves so I would definitely go with your gut on sizing but I say they are true to fit based on your experience. Otherwise, great glove and money well spent.

    Just Received - Initial Impressions

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small

Just got these. I normally wear an XL glove, true to form go up a size with Castelli. I got the XXL and it fits perfectly. These seem like they will be warm and relatively rain proof, will follow up after I've had a chance to put them through the wringer. Not too bulky, feel like brake/shifter control will be pretty good. Touch pads on fingers will allow me to operate my phone but it's a little clunky, we'll see after they are broken in.

Great Winter Glove - Order 1 Size Larger

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small

The durability and functionality of these gloves is superb. Warm into the lower 30s F. They are freakishly small. I forgot about this and ordered a new Medium pair since that is what I use in everything else. It's a good thing my wife (usually wears S or XS) needed a new pair of winter gloves as well since the M size fit her perfectly.

    Fantastic winter glove

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Fits great, true to size. Very warm. I bought it to fill the gap between my full fingered wind stopper gloves and my bulky but very warm lobster claw gloves. i am pleased to report, these are nearly as warmth as my lobsters, but with much less bulk and much more dexterity.

    Performs As Expected

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

Great glove and Castelli's 36-54F temperature range spec is right on the money. Am pretty sure these will remain warm in low 30s/upper 20s. Good flexibility and design. Buy a size larger.
