Do the work now, reap results when it counts.

Imagine being able to ride in cold weather with clothing that emulated all the best features of your summer-weight kit: bibs that didn't restrict breathing, a chamois as good as the one in your best shorts, and lightweight materials that didn't feel bulky or restrictive. The Castelli Sorpasso Bib Tights are part of Castelli's Rosso Corsa line of products, and as a result, they get the Italian manufacturer's very best treatment in materials, design, and fit.

The Sorpasso Bib Tights begin with Castelli's top-of-the-line Progetto X2 pad, the same pad found in their best shorts. The top layer that contacts your skin is a made from a seamless, four-way stretch microdenier fabric designed to move in harmony with your body and eliminate the chafing that can come with materials with too little stretch. It receives an antibacterial treatment and is bonded to a variable thickness pad made from multiple density foams; the result is a smoothly contoured pad that places the firmest foam where support is most needed. Perforated inserts help to relieve pressure on the sit bones and perineum -- just where riders experience the greatest pressure.

The front of the tights are cut from Thermoflex Core Due to keep the wind out. This two-layer material traps air in a hollow-core layer of polyester while moisture is transported to the outer nylon/Lycra layer where it can evaporate. A simpler fabric, Thermoflex, is used for the portions of the tights not exposed to the wind for greater breathability. Giro++ grippers keep both the bib straps and ankles in place. It's rare to find bibtights that are this light and this warm.

Like the bibs in the Rosso Corsa line, the waist of the Sorpasso Bib Tights is cut very low to eliminate restrictions on breathing caused by pressure on the belly.

The Castelli Sorpasso Bib Tights are Black/white and are available in six sizes from Small through XXX-Large.

  • Hollow core fibers trap warm air and move moisture better than traditional fibers
  • Progetto X2 chamois keeps your nether regions comfortable on long rides
  • Ankle zippers make the early-morning dressing routine a little easier

Great tights

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: S

It's a tad snug, but in no way uncomfortable. Excellent for windy and cool rides. Will purchase another set soon.

Castelli; when in doubt, size up!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

Fellas, unless your name is "Chris Froome," always size up when looking at Castelli tights.

I'm 5'9", 210 lbs, avid cyclist and weight lifter, and I love me some squats and deads. I originally ordered a size L, based on the waist measurements reported in the size chart. I tried them on, and got them up to just above the knee before they were like "nope, no further!" It's not the waist measurement you have to watch out for, it's the thigh (which of course they don't list). I exchanged them for an XL and they fit almost perfectly, save for being just a little long in the leg.

As others have noted, they are indeed a little light in the insulation department in the front upper thigh area. Also, the size and shape of the pad leads me to believe this is a tight designed more for cruising around town on the hoods rather than cranking hard in the drops. The rearmost portion of the pad (for your butt) is almost comically thick at 12mm, whereas the middle portion (for your gooch) is only like 6mm or something. If you're sat up, on the rear of the saddle, they're like riding on a pillow, if you're hunkered down, pedaling hard and riding on the front of the saddle they're a little less forgiving.

All things considered, you can't beat them for the price. Riding at a decent intensity, I'd say these tights can easily handle temps into the 30s.

Warm; weird fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

Definitely does the trick re: keeping you warm. On a long ride in the mid-50s, they were almost overkill. So I'm sure they'd be fine down to 40° or below, assuming you're riding pretty hard. The flexibility, movement and compressibility of the fabric/panels is great. So is the chamois. Absolutely no hotspots; little or no need to shift around/fidget on the saddle. Unfortunately, due to odd tailoring, it ends up placing itself way too far forward when riding. Off the bike, it doesn't fit snugly and sags markedly. To be fair, I never understood why most pads run so far in the back where padding is never needed, unless you're leaning backward at a 45° angle, riding hands-free in order to nurse a cappuccino. But for a serious piece of racing kit, the strange placement is bothersome, creating extra bulk up front. I'm 5-11, 157 lbs. and ordered a large. I wondered if ordering up a size might have eliminated this problem, but then the rest of the tights would have been too large. They're already just snug/long enough everywhere else. A note on the zippers: once they are zipped-up, the pull-tab has to be locked in the 'up' position. This will prevent unintended unzipping. This is the case with every pair of Castellis I've ever owned.

Warm and tight!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I wore these three times this year already on 48/55 degree morning rides. These bibs are awesome! Talk about comfortable and warm. Loved these ones so much I purchased another pair!

Love these bibs

Wore it for the first time today. Blustery September day 15mph wind that felt like 51 F. Fits great in a large. I'm 6'2"@200#.

    Great mid-winter tights

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

Bought these tights for winter commuting and have used them a number of times already. They are great, nice and warm, and super comfortable. The only downsides are that I found that the shamois / crotch section was not warm enough below freezing, necessitating wearing my splash pants. Also, the little zippers at the ankles often catch the fabric and are tough to undo sometimes. And then sometimes they "slightly" undo themselves as they don't lock really.

Other than that, really like them!

    Warm but odd fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

These bibs were kept me at a perfect temperature during a 40-45 degree ride. The downside for myself is that the Chamois doesn't fit me like any other pair of my Castelli bibs. The chamois seemed to be placed about 3" further forward than my other bibs which put my sit bones on the very edge of the pad/ off of the pad for most of my ride. If i buy another pair i would definitely buy a size up. Other than that issue i had no other gripes.

    Customer Service

    • Size Bought: XXXL

Ordered the red. It didn't arrive. I waited 4 weeks before calling Competitive Cyclist. Unfortunately the red was out of stock in my size. I was immediately offer the white with one left in stock. My original sale price honored. I accepted and it arrived in 3 days. The company did a goo job with customer service. I'm a Clydesdale at 6'0 and 255 football build. Ordered Size was XXXL having read fits small. Fit is perfect and non of the thred poping like folks described in other reviews. Use the bibs 40 to low 60's.

    Nice Tights!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: XL

I'm a fan of Castelli gear, so I bought these to get me through early/late winter rides. I've used them down to about 40 degrees and they've been plenty warm enough, especially once you get moving. The Progetto pad is awesome. I'm used to Castelli shorts with the Kiss pad, and this is a nice step up. Some of the reviews mention the wind cutting through them, and I have noticed that a little bit. So I'll knock off a star for that.

Fit is typical Castelli - tight and racy. The XL fits the same as other XL Castelli shorts I have.

    Fits like a glove.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this pair as an alternative to a one-piece suit and it works great. The straps are a little bit thin in width, but the overall construction is holds together well.

Bought these for a spring/late winter tight. Castellis quality is always a draw for me. Tight fits great, love ankle zips. Chamois is great but as other people have written , very poor insulation for your junk. Want to love these at 5 stars but that's definitely a flaw. Have ridden in them down to 36 degrees here in New England...

    Great cool weather bibs

When it's 40F-50F and not windy, I'll reach for these. For anything colder than that, go for the Sorpassos with windblock on the front, or something else entirely. The wind coming through is noticeable until you work up enough heat. Even then, you can feel it on long fast descents.

Excellent chamois and the cut overall is comfortable enough I forget they're there. Still not in love with the thin laser-cut shoulder straps which tend to roll even when you take the time to start them off flat and straight. I do wish the front were cut a little lower. That would create less pressure on your diaphragm, but it's not terrible. Plus, breaks would be a bit easier, too. The thin ankle cuff looks a bit delicate to me, but it seems to be holding up under repeated use. With it being thin it does fit comfortably into booties with no pressure points, though at these temps I'm usually just wearing toe warmers.

Overall, they're some pretty good shorts especially when they're on sale.

I live in these all year round

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small

I cycling a lot (16,000+km last year) and I do long rides in all weather conditions. For me a long ride 20 hours plus.

When you have to wear the same piece of kit for 20 hours plus, in temperatures ranging from below freezing at night and baking sun during the day, then these are my go to tights. Love them :)

      Good, but...

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 3XL

I like these tights, but they aren't perfect. 3 and 1/2 is the real rating.

They aren't quite as warm as my Assos LL.HABUTIGHTS_S7 bib tights, which is fine - as it gives me a choice depending on the weather. 45-50 is a good range for these, below 45 and I reach for the Assos.

The zipper around the ankle is a nice touch. The bib is a little high in front, but still workable for that mid-ride relief on long days (Assos is a bit better here).

My one compliant is that there is a seam down the middle of the crotch that seems to want to shove the package to one side of the other. With a little adjustment the ride gets comfortable, but Assos definitely has a better fit in this area. Of course, the Assos is much more expensive, too - so that's a big trade-off.

Like all Castelli, they run pretty small. I'm 6'3" and 205 and the 3XL works very well.

      You're comparing these with Assos???......lol

      Great tights!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Large

Solid pair of bib tights - keeps you warm and doesn't rub in any of the wrong places. Perfectly padded chamois. Great for rides in 40-50 deg F, maybe down to 35 deg if low wind.

      Great tights!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: XL

I love these bib tights. Same great chamois as my bib shorts, so no disappointment there, and I was already familiar with Castelli's rather small sizing, so my fit was fine. My winter rides in the desert start off pretty chilly in the low 40's and often warm up to high 50's. These are warm and toasty early on the ride, without getting too hot as both me and the temp warm up. Nice wind protection, again, without overdoing it and getting too warm. Front is pretty high, so pulling down for a "nature break" is quite a tug, but manageable, and the high front does block more wind. Overall, I'm as happy as I have been with all my Castelli bibs.

Sizing question. Using Castelli's size chart, it appears that I should order a medium. But, several reviewers suggest sizing up. I'm 5'9", 148 lbs and 31" waist, 39" chest.

      Best Answer

I'm 5' 9" and 175, wear an XL. It is a very tiny bit long (not bothersome at all) but otherwise I couldn't wear any smaller. I would think a L would be good for you.

Thanks David. I had a suspicion that a medium might be too small for me. I'll go with the Large!

      Your size is "L"

      I'm 5'11" , 175lbs, 32waist, 40 chest

      My size is XL

As other reviewers have posted---size up 1x if you're in the USA. Castelli runs small, so don't think you're buying fat pants. Cut the tag out and tell your friends they are a medium. 36-50 degrees are no problem. They block the wind like other thermal waterproof bibs I have that are 3x as thick and 3x more restrictive. The description is correct when it says its rare to find bibs this warm and light. I was simply amazed on today's ride in a 15mph wind that went from 45 to 36 degrees. They blocked the wind and kept me warm and I didn't overheat. There is a slight fleece lining that is super comfortable as well---the sit pad is top-of-the-line as other Castelli bib shorts I have. Castelli did very well on this product.
