Superleggera 2 Jersey

Inspired by the towering mountain passes and dizzying switchbacks along Switzerland's awe-inspiring Flüela Pass, Castelli's Superleggera 2 Jersey was designed as a lightweight, everyday jersey that inherits much of the same technology as Castelli's pro race jerseys. A few functional details added to the Superleggera make it suitable for warm weather training and climb-heavy routes.

Castelli strove to make this jersey as light as possible, without sacrificing the fabric strength and jersey features. To do this, Castelli constructed the body and sleeves with their new Oltre 70g mesh base fabric that adeptly draws moisture away from your body as you ride. The fit is cut close to the body but a bit more relaxed than Castelli’s race-cut jersey to better enhance air flow through the fabric.

In pro race kit, details like a zippered security pocket, top zipper protection, and gripper elastic around the waist aren't essential, but Castelli adds these finishing touches to the Superleggera for comfort and convenience during everyday rides. The pocket panel uses a stretch woven fabric for greater strength to support loaded pockets for all-day rides.

Best for hot weather

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

If I am going on an over 90 degree and especially 100 degree or higher ride this is my go to jersey and the thought of any other lightweight ones feel stifling in comparison. The material feels a bit delicate, probably because it's so thin and transparent. Like it's really seethrough so if you have body confidence issue it probably isn't what you'd feel comfortable wearing if you're going to stop in shops (at least I don't!). I've had mine about a year and use it weekly in the hot (Over 90 degrees and up to 115) months which is over half the year where I live and it kinda feels like it might be stretched out a bit but still is very form fitting. The material is soft and better than being shirtless as it helps cool with evaporation. By contrast Rapha's Core Lightweight jersey does feel nice and soft but isn't as breathable. Rapha's Featherweight jersey which I guess is supposed to be even lighter (they are so not clear with things like this) is almost itchy and not as breathable as this. People have said Castelli's Climbers jerseys are very seethrough as well. I haven't tried that yet to be able to compare hot weather comfort and opacity. Like all things Castelli, if you're a bigger guy you might walk away feeling bad. In most non cycling clothing I wear a large shirt, sometimes XL depending on the maker. For Rapha jerseys I'm an XL. I accept that cycling gear is very tight and such and Castelli does go up to XXXL which I used to wear. It'd just be cool if they used a number if your clothes range from small or xs up to XXXL as most cycling gear seems to go up to maybe a 2XL. That might help with all the people on the other spectrum that say about their stuff "I usually wear a medium but it was too small!". I only bring this up as Backcountry asks if it fits true to size, and I'd say, yes, for this brand the XXL fits the same as their other jerseys of the same size. Comparing them to other manufactures not so much and you probably should go up a size for a comparable fit.

I have a love/hate thing with Castelli. The style is always great, but the products themselves can be hit or miss; the inconsistent sizing across the line doesn't help, either. So far, however, I love this jersey. I got it as a special "super hot weather/long ride" jersey, not an everyday jersey. The fabric is so light that it is sheer, but it still manages to fit well and have some substance, if that makes any sense. The fabric appears similar to, though more densely woven, the material Castelli uses for the bib straps of the Free Aero Race 4 bibshorts. The fit is close to the body, and relatively short in the torso, but with modern long-ish sleeves, which I like a lot. Although the fit is close, it is not a "compressive" fit or material, so I feel the look is flattering. The pockets are slightly smaller than my usual jerseys (a mix of Assos mille and Giordana), but still securely hold my necessities, including a Silca Eolo wallet (with spare tube, patches, mini-tool, inflator and cartridges, and micro-pump) and an iPhone XR. I also appreciate very much the zippered rear pocket, which can hold keys safely (a really nice feature that is sadly disappearing from many jerseys). In hot weather, the jersey is so light it almost disappears and both wicks and evaporates sweat extremely well. I have a Santini "Stile" jersey, which just holds the sweat against my torso, where it clammily sticks to me -- definitely no such problems with this Castelli Superleggera 2 jersey. Like most Castelli gear, the jersey looks good, and I get compliments on it. The one wild card is durability. My past Castelli gear has been hit or miss in terms of durability, and the extremely light weight/thinness of the fabric used in this jersey raises some concerns (no problems so far, after several uses/washes). However, I intend to use this jersey only on the hottest days and longer rides, which both is its raison d'etre, and should help it last longer. For its intended use, a definite five star in my book.
