Why We Like The Polare 2 Bib Tight

A little bit of wind can be refreshing in summer but quickly turns devastating on frigid mid-winter rides. Fend off icy, biting wind gusts with the element-fighting power of Castelli's Polare 2 Men's Bib Tights. Made with Gore Windstopper X-Fast fabric across the front and wrapping around the sides, these tights block the chill whether the wind is coming from Mother Nature or as a result of all those watts you're dropping into the pedals. Across the back, Castelli uses its soft, fleecy Thermoflex Core2 fabric for a blend of breathability and warmth that will have you taking the long way home on even the coldest days.

Weird Sizing, Bulky Seams

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
Medium
Height:
5' 9"
Weight:
150

I own eight pair of Castelli bibs, including two pair of Sorpasso ROS bib tights. They are all size large and all form fitting, typical Castelli snug fit and sizing. I tried the Polare 3 bib tights in a size large and they were way too big through the hips, so I tried the size medium. The mediums do fit, but there are thick, bulky fabric seams below the knees, and the shoulder straps are cheap and super tight. These are very uncomfortable bib shorts, and sized unlike any other Castelli bibs I’ve ever owned. The bulky leg seams are a real surprise, never seen anything like it in other Castelli kit. Returned.

Great for cold weather

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
XXL
Height:
5' 19"
Weight:
220

I’ve ridden in some low temps (low 30s) with this and haven’t had a problem. It keeps the legs warm. Sizing can be a problem if you’re not used to Castelli or European sizing in general. I’d suggest going up two sizes. 5’10, 220 lbs, 29 inch inseam. I use XXL.

Yet Another Sizing Challenge

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

The good news: seems to be well made and is flexible and warm (have ridden wearing it at 38 degrees) and did not feel cold at all. The bad news: third time's the charm. The third try finally go the size right, or as close to right at it is going to be. Sizing is WAY TOO SMALL. So, I would recommend it so long as it is on sale and if a size two up from your usual size is available.

STUPID,STUPID design,instant calf cramps

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
2xl
Height:
6' 1"
Weight:
195

The whole point of wearing cycling attire is to have minimal seams for maximum range of unencumbered motion. Having those non stretchy reflectors sewn right across back of calves is the most stupid design ever. Designer has to be a non rider, or have pencil legs. Every leg motion cuts across calf, guaranteeing calf cramps during ride, or at least severe irritability every pedal stroke. Very comfortable bib tights otherwise.

Good Winter Bibtight

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
XL
Height:
5' 11"
Weight:
185

I am 5'11 and 185# with a 32/33" waist. I bought the XL (my size in most Castelli which runs very small) and can't imagine fitting in something smaller. I've ridden these quite a bit this winter in Southern New England. Depending on conditions, I choose these, or the Tuto Nano which is lighter construction without the Gore-Tex Infinium layer on front. These are great and have given me access to many colder days (near freezing) when I'd otherwise be unable to ride. An unsurprising consequence (on reflection) is that they do require more work to ride. I find I can easily do 20-25 road miles in these, but at 30-35 I would be starting to flag. I notice it when riding in groups more so than alone. I don't experience this with the Tuto Nano. My unscientific read on that is that there is more bulk and fabric and that presents more resistance and more work. I don't have a power meter on my winter/gravel bikes so no deeper analysis. I've also used for colder gravel and dirt/ice roads and they have held up through a number of falls (and cleaning) without issue. The fit, wear and warmth have all met or exceeded my expectations.

Getting better with age

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
M
Height:
5' 10"
Weight:
165

I purchased this bib in 2020 and consistently use it in temperatures between 25 - 45 degrees. After two years, I've been very happy with it. Here's why. - The seams haven't showed any signs of tearing, which is important in a winter bib that takes a good amount of tugging and yanking to get on. -It's warm enough in the coldest conditions yet not unpleasantly hot if a cold morning ride ends in the high 40s or low 50s. -The reflective aspects are key for rides in the early morning or after dusk. Note: I typically wear a pair of shorts (full on padded bike shorts) beneath this bib. I like the added cushion and protection it provides against the wind. The other bonus is that it usually means I only need to wash the shorts unless the ride is really long. Gross. Gross but efficient.

Great winter Bib Tight.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
3xl
Height:
6' 1"
Weight:
245

I had a pair of the previous generation of this tight (Polare 2) and it never really felt good to me. These new Polare 3 tights get it right, though. The previous generation seemed incrementally too small for me, these fit great. The previous generation seemed to bind up in weird places and were a bit of a hassle to get on, these are comfortable and a treat to put on. The ankle zips have been moved to the side where they're much easier to operate, which eliminates one of the more annoying quirks of the previous generation. The materials and workmanship on both are, of course, top notch. The only thing I don't understand is why they still equip this tight with their KISS AIR 2 pad instead of their top-of-the-line Progetto X2 AIR pad. Both are great pads, I'd just prefer the nicer option in these otherwise top-of-the-line tights. I can only really comment on their performance in cold, dry weather, but so far, they've been great in the upper 20F temps we've been having here in Chicago. I plan on getting another pair or two since they're considerably nicer than my other winter tights (PI AmFib) and probably 90% as capable.
