Pioggia 3 Shoe Covers

In the rain, the Achilles heel of every shoe cover is the closure system. It's far too common for a seemingly acceptable cover to become a rain gutter as soon as the weather dampens. Frankly, we're astonished. That's why the Castelli Pioggia 3 Shoe Covers are a breath of fresh air -- they do what they say they do. With a sealed-seam design and effective ankle closures, the Pioggia 3 Shoe Covers will keep your feet dry when the rain tries to ruin your ride.

The Pioggia 3s have one purpose -- keeping you comfortable in wet weather. To achieve this, Castelli started by applying a polyurethane treatment to the exterior of the covers' fabric. This improves the overall water-resistance, while still allowing a high degree of breathability. For further protection, the Pioggia uses a sealed-seam construction to eliminate any seepage from needle holes. The stretchable quality of the covers' fabric also ensures a durable resistance to either tearing or losing its shape from repeated entries and exits. Along these lines, Castelli included welded, water-resistant zippers to get in and out of the covers. And as we've been boasting, the true degree of separation for the Pioggia 3s is the Nanoflex ankle closure system. The tall cuff is snug and conforming without being restrictive. So, regardless of body type, the Nanoflex will retain a seal to prevent running water from infiltrating the covers.

New to this year, the Pioggia features a light, interior layer of fleece to add to the warmth of the covers. Now, Castelli estimates the Pioggia's effective climate range to be between 46 and 57 degrees Fahrenheit. And knowing that the wet-weather rider isn't afraid to ride in low-light conditions, Castelli also included reflective accents throughout the cover for added visibility.

The Castelli Pioggia 3 Shoe Covers are available in the colors Black and White and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large.

  • Castelli's waterproof, insulated bootie for cold and wet conditions
  • Waterproof PU-coated stretch fabric keeps elements out
  • Fleece layer inside adds cozy insulating warmth
  • Silicone bead inside the top of cuff prevents water ingress
  • Wrap cuff construction optimizes the fit
  • Waterproof zipper further keeps the rain at bay
  • Highly durable materials underfoot keep this bootie going for seasons
  • Ideally situated for temps between 28 - 54 degrees Fahrenheit

They Don't Work

Runs small
Size Bought

I've tried a few of Castellis shoe covers, including these. All I ever get is wet feet. Rain resistant or waterproof, they don't work.

Light and effective but fragile

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Runs small

These fit well, but go a size up so you don't tear them trying to get them on. Light and effective in wet Pacific Northwest Fall conditions, but wouldn't use them in heavy downpour. Sadly they are not durable. Had a tear on inside heel after second use from contact with bike crank while riding.

Great if used correctly

Pioggia means "rain" in Italian. These mid-weight, water-resistant booties are designed for riding in wet weather from 60° F down to the upper 40s. PROS: Waterproof polyurethane coated material. High quality YKK waterproof zipper on the side (not up the back). Zipper garage (nice). No cut-out for the heal pad (they did this on purpose to help keep the rain out). Great looks. 4 tips for use: (1) Tape up any vent holes on the bottom of your shoes to prevent wheel spray ingress. (2) Wear these with a quality wool sock. (3) Add toe covers underneath for more thermal protection if desired. (4) If riding on wet roads or in rain, zip your bibtight cuffs OVER these booties to direct rain/water over the booties and away. I don't get the terrible reviews below. Yes, these run small. It's Italian sizing. Size up +1, per usual with Castelli. And yes, the waterproof material is a little delicate and will rip if you are not careful. My old Pearl Izumi WxB booties did this also. So put these on carefully and size properly! Sizing: I wear a 45 in Sidi and Shimano. The XL here fit my shoes well (snug). If you wear a 46+, you need the XXLs.

Low Cost, Low Quality

The fabric is pretty flimsy. I tore is slightly just putting it on. Also, size up one size. I ordered a large, and they are impossible to get on. They don't have a heal cut out, but that really isn't a selling point for me. If you are short on money and need something to get you through the 35+ degree F days, this would be a good option.

Damp Days

I've used it several times

Found these to be good for damp, drizzly days. Fairly easy to get on/off. Lack of a heel cutout doesn't bother me, my pair seem to be holding up well. Have yet to use them in a downpour.

Missing Heel Cutouts

I want to like these covers but the missing heel cutout is a deal breaker. I've only used it once and already the bottom part is showing wear and tear. At this rate it won't last more than a month. Also, it fit awkwardly around my left cleat, making it hard for me to snap into my pedal. I'm returning it and buying something else.
