Perfetto RoS Convertible Jacket

Building on the previous Perfetto, Castelli aims to take things to the next level with the new Perfetto RoS Convertible jacket. At first glance, changes are abound left and right, and while the aesthetic changes to play a big part in the performance of the piece, we'd argue that the lesser noticed changes are where the biggest differences come to play. That's to say that, at first glance, you might not spot that Castelli drifts away from its GORE Windstopper construction for this iteration, moving to textiles that push further forward with Rain or Shine protection, utilizing GORE's newest Infinium fabrics.

While Windstopper served a solid purpose — stopping wind, the new Infinium 205 Warm offers a little more, with a brushed interior to trap in heat, and water protection on the outside, in addition to wind coverage. This is employed at all front-facing surfaces, where we need the most protection as we pedal into foul weather. To balance the insulation and elemental coverage at the front, Castelli utilizes GORE's Infinium 203 Stretch at the rear-facing surfaces. As the name may have you guessing, Infinium 203 Stretch is incredibly flexible, and offers lighter coverage than its partner in the front. It provides improved breathability for managing your perspiration as you pedal, and while the generous stretch allows the piece to contour to your body as you pedal.

Big changes were carried through beyond fabric alone, though, with the biggest being the new sleeve construction. Rather than offering sleeves that zip off from the torso, the new Perfetto RoS Convertible Jacket uses a new design that zips off just above the elbow. Now we know what you're thinking — raw zipper on the bicep while riding? No thank you. — But as usual, Castelli has thought through all of the details, opting for a unique cuff design at the sleeve, with a 3/4-zip, and multiple fabric layers to host the zipper sandwiched in the middle. This means that when you wear the jacket in long-sleeve form, no zipper is exposed and visible, and when you remove the sleeves, the zippers edge sits neatly inside, where it doesn't come into contact with your skin, or show its less pleasing aesthetic. Instead, you're left with a short-sleeve jacket that resembles the Gabba, which we find brilliant.

  • Castelli improves upon the Perfetto for its latest convertible piece
  • New zipper placement offers cleaner jacket and short-sleeve appearance
  • GORE Infinium fabrics offer improved breathability and waterproofing
  • Taped seams further keep moisture from sneaking inwards
  • Sleeves remove at elbow for a cleaner jersey feel when short-sleeve
  • Convertible zips are tucked between fabric layers to prevent irritation
  • Keep your riding essentials at hand with two deep pockets, 1 pump sleeve
  • Gabba-style drop tail hem with reflective panel elevates low light visibility

Cool weather gear

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

The Perfetto RoS Convertible Jacket is a solid choice for anyone looking for a layer for when it is in the 40's and may creep into the 50's. I wear a medium jersey in most brands and went for a medium in this. It fits but is race tight. For layering, I would order a size up.

The material is one in which it has some resistance to it, hence ROS, meaning rain or shine. This is a valuable component as it serves a dual purpose, blocking the wind and keeping you warm. I'm looking forward to using this jersey in multiple situations. One, for days where its in the 40's with a base layer underneath. Another, when its in the low 50's, or I know it will warm up and I will unzip the sleeves and use the jersey paired with a pair of arm warmers. This ability to have this jacket work in temperatures ranging from 40-55 is its greatest asset.

Unanswered Question

Which is warmer, the Perfetto ROS or the Alpha ROS Light? I have the previous version Perfetto for reference.
thx

skepticism yields to brilliance

I enjoy good gear almost as much as I am passionate about riding. But I have many jackets, and bought this one on a whim, hoping it would indeed improve on the Castelli Gabba Windstopper model (of which I have two--one with the removable sleeves, and the other a simple jacket). I don't buy things with the plan to return them, but I rationalized buying this one with the assumption that I would return it if it wasn't perfect.

It's perfect.

For starters, the Infinium fabric is for real. I wore only a thin Gore baselayer over a Castelli webbed base t-shirt during a 7-hour ride that took me from sunny, low 60s (f) to mid-30s with significant wind chill (got caught in the dark). My hands got cold at the mid-30s, but my core was just find in this jacket even though I didn't have any real insulating base layer.

The sleeve removal above the elbows is an improvement on the older model that removed at the shoulders (easier to remove on the fly, and also no bulky overlapping fabric, like the shoulder-removal predecessor, not to mention that the removed sleeves are shorter and thus take less space in pockets compared to the longer-sleeve of the predecessor Gabba jacket).

Other nice details include (i) the zipper cover terminating above where one starts the zipper (makes it easier to put on); (ii) fit is aero and bike-specific with no rolls of fabric when you're bent into riding position (fits tight on chest until you get in a riding position, then it's just right, and the longer sleeves work); (iii) high neck is nice for cold, but not an issue when unzipped in warmer conditions; (iv) the double pockets (instead of triple) concerned me, but they're larger and compensate for the 2 vs. 3 drop.

I'm 5'7", 130ish lbs, athletic build. Small was aero but won't provide much room for thick base layers. I also ride in M Castelli jackets. This superior fabric will lead me to wear this aero small over my bulkier Ms, though.

Very impressed

I was a bit hesitant on pulling the trigger on such an expensive jacket/jersey top but the thought of not having to carry multiple layers was very tempting. I had my first ride this past weekend and it delivered beyond my expectations. The temperature was around 45 when I started and ended around 52, with a lot of wind. I was very comfortable the entire ride, a bit chilly initially but once I started pedaling I was impressed at how windproof it was while not getting me soaking wet. The front ventilation zippers with the combination of the more breathable fabric on the back helped keep me dry and warm. I thought the blue color might stand out too much but it was actually more subtle than I thought. Looks a lot better in person. Would highly recommend.
As most who use Castelli would know, I had to size up to get the right fit. I normally wear a Large in Pearl Izumi stuff for example, but a XXL fit me perfectly in this instance.
I want to give a shout out to Nathan Simpson from CC who helped me with this order. If any of you need any gear advice, he is super knowledgeable and will work with you to find you the gear you need.
