Description

Mighty protection in a minimalist package.

Back for its second generation, the Castelli Men's Idro 2 Jacket retains the legendary waterproof protection and outstanding breathability of Gore-Tex's Shakedry membrane, but it's lighter than ever and features a subtle redesign in graphics along the backside. The Idro 2 Jacket builds on the successor's ultra-lightweight, highly compact shell by shaving approximately 16 grams from its design and taking up only half the space of a rear jersey pocket when it's folded inside.

Besides being lighter than an afternoon snack at a mere 107 grams, the Idro 2 Jacket retains the Gore-Tex Shakedry membrane, which places the waterproof, breathable membrane on the outside of the jacket, thereby preventing the chance of it wetting out when it's subjected to hours of heavy rain. And because Shakedry is one of the most breathable constructions in Gore-Tex's line, you'll enjoy won't feel like you're wearing a sweaty garbage bag, especially on long climbs where overheating is commonplace. It's rounded out with a waterproof YKK Vislon zipper, plus reflective highlights that pop on those dreary days with rain and ominous clouds.

  • Ultra-lightweight, highly compact rain shell
  • Sits close to body with dropped rear for protection
  • Takes up only half a jersey pocket when folded inside
  • Gore-Tex Shakedry won't wet out like traditional jackets
  • Shakedry membrane is reliably waterproof, highly breathable
  • YKK Vislon waterproof zipper won't allow water to leak in
  • Reflective rear elements pop when visibility is limited

I buy tons of stuff on this site, and I don't often take the time to review things. The Idro 2 might be the best piece of kit I own. When it comes to rain jackets, everyone is trying to find that unicorn that keeps you dry, and NOT sweaty. In the right conditions, this jacket fits the bill. I rode in horribly dangerous conditions in this jacket, through torrential wind and rain that reduced visibility to nothing, until I decided that I didn't want to get hit by traffic and hid under an abandoned fruit stand. Every part of me that was covered by the Idro 2 was completely dry. You could dump a bucket of water over yourself in this thing and stay dry. I have worn it when the rain has been intermittent, and you can feel a little bit of breeze passing through it, so it breathes well for the amount of protection that it gives. That being said, if you are going out in light rain, and it is hot outside, go for a vest. you do not want to be wearing this if it is not raining, as you will overheat. It takes up less than a pocket when packed, so that is a big plus. I take it with me any time the weather looks questionable, but it is at its best in consistent, moderate to heavy rain. Sizing is consistent with other Castelli products (which is on the small side), I am 5'8", 130 lbs, and a small fits me perfectly. It does have a race cut, so you won't fit a ton of layers under it, but it does not flap around, and never feels constricting. The only other thing worth mentioning is that it is not quite black. It looks black until you put it on, then you will see that it does not match your shorts, then by contrast it almost looks like a very dark brown. I couldn't care less, but that might matter to some people. If you are out riding in the conditions that this thing can handle, nobody is going to notice the color. If you want the ability to ride through a monsoon, get this thing.

Fantastic

I ordered this jacket through Competitive Cyclist but noted that it was shipped by Back Country so I'm putting the review here. First things first - I'm not a big guy I have a 33 inch waist and I believe a 40" chest. In 95% of my clothes a medium fits me to a "T." I suspected that this might be a bit smallish so I ordered up to a size large and it fits like a condom. Kinda like it that way as it doesn't flap in the wind. You do have to take your gloves off to get it off your hands. Has a nice long tail to keep your butt dry and a big reflector on the back to keep cars from smashing you. I wouldn't even consider mountain biking with this coat unless it was on a nice wide double track where a crash could not happen or a snag on a tree branch.
I have a couple other Gortex "Shake Dry" coats and let me say that Gortex finally, after thirty years of trying, got it right. The membrane is on the outside and water always, always beads up like water on a duck's back. Give it a little shake and the water is gone. It DOES NOT WET OUT. Ever. Also no condensation builds up on the inside of the jacket. Your jersey may get damp but not excessively so. No rubber bag effect here.
Since the membrane is on the outside I highly recommend that when you stow this jacket you roll it up with the membrane on the inside to give it a little added protection in your jersey pocket or whereever else you may stow it. It rolls up to about the size of a hot dog (bun included) and easily stows just about anywhere. It is also light as a feather - mine weighs 4.0 ounces including the rubber band that keeps it rolled.

Awesome jacket !

OK so the price tag is high BUT took this jacket out in a downpour ride last Saturday afternoon. Was on the bike for three hours and was bone dry on the inside. Not even a drop from sweat! Typical Castelli it runs small but once you know your size it a consistent fit. I’m 5”10, 180 lbs and wear and XL. It’s a great piece of kit and folds down to smaller bunch than my vest.
