Description

Free your inner speed.

Tri season is fast approaching, and face it: you're not sold on your racing kit. Too often, tri kit shines in one or two legs of a race, but falls short in another. We don't blame it; swimming, cycling, and running are three entirely different disciplines, all of which require specialized kit. It's not entirely surprising that Castelli has taken a big step closer to one kit that does it all with the Free Speed Race Tri Jersey. Replace your tired kit with this impressive new option and race with improved comfort in each leg.

Designed with modifications to adapt it to each leg, the Tri Jersey is far from a typical sleeveless cycling jersey that's merely adequate for a swim and a run. Its highly mobile shoulders provide you with full range of motion as you fight for space in the water and pump your arms while clearing the crowd in T2. Castelli also used its wind-cheating Velocity mesh along the back of the jersey to limit drag on the bike, and departed from the classic sleeveless look of tri kit by adding sleeves for added sun protection. If you're worried about gaps in kit on the bike, just use the SnapLock fastener to attach the Free Speed Race to your short in T1. It'll ensure you have the coverage of a one-piece suit for a distraction-free bike leg.

  • Swim, bike, and run for the podium in this tri race jersey
  • Form-fitting cut tailored specifically for triathlon
  • Airy, highly breathable fabrics wick while reducing drag
  • Elastic around shoulders allows for full range of motion
  • SnapLock fastener clips to shorts to prevent riding up
  • Rear pockets are hydro- and aero-optimized

Yikes.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I should've read the reviews before I bought this. Since I didn't, I got to discover firsthand what every other commenter has pointed out: this jersey runs at least two, maybe three sizes small.

You might be okay with only going up a size or two, provided that you have a short torso and/or don't intend to use this jersey for its advertised purpose—triathlons. If you'll only be in a bib and hunched over a bike, rather than swimming or standing/running upright in tri shorts, this is a handsome and well-made top (though probably still uncomfortably tight if you buy at your chart size).

For reference, the zipper on the medium is 17 inches long. Competitive Cyclist was kind enough to confirm that the XL has an 18-inch zipper, while the XXL has 19 inches (I didn't even bother to ask about the large). If one of those lengths works for you and is still in stock, you could be in luck. I would likely have ordered the XXL if it was still available in my desired color, but I wouldn't wear anything smaller than that for a tri, and wouldn't wear the medium size at all.

I'd give this zero stars for fit relative to the sizing chart, and maybe four for everything else—if I'd been able to wear it for long enough to confirm its quality. As it is, I can't really recommend it.

Fits Small

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I received the first shirt and ordered a Large and was way too tight so returned and ordered an XL. About 2 sizes larger than normal fit for other brands. Other than size being hard to figure out it is a great jersey and now works great.

Who fits these?

I am 5ft 11-1/2in tall, weigh 164lbs and wear a 16x34 dress shirt. The medium when zipped was stressing the zipper and the large was only marginally better. I like the idea of the buttons to hold jersey and shorts together but all in all concerned about jersey exploding during an event. Company needs to look at real people and size accordingly.

Agreed. I'm 5'9", 160# and take an XL in this brand. I think they're made for horse jockeys.

    Too small

I am 5ft 11-1/2” tall and weigh 164 lbs and typical musculature and body composition for an average 46 yr old runner/triathlete, I have tried this in both medium and large. The medium cause concerned that zipper would explode and the large was only slightly better. I do not mind form fitting but this caused issues. I like the idea of the snaps on the back but the company needs to seriously look at its sizing. An XL might work but I am done with returns.

I agree I'm 5'7 at 153 and I went with the large very constricting... my son tried it on he is 5'9 at 140 it was a prefect fit lol
