No bibs required.

After an additional cycle of R&D, Castelli has reshaped the aerodynamic platform of the Free Aero Shorts into a women's-specific design. Women's-specific shorts tend to carry certain expectations and, without a doubt, the most crucial of these is a bib-free option. While opinions at Competitive are divided, plenty of us feel that bibs are primarily an androcentric design. By omitting them here, Castelli gives the lady racer the option to enjoy an aerodynamic advantage without the cycling world's version of the jacket-and-tie requirement for entry.

Like its bibbed counterpart, the Free Aero Shorts are designed to cheat the wind, reducing power output requirements by a claimed 10 watts at 50 kilometers an hour. The secret to these gains lies in how the shorts manage airflow across their multiple boundaries and textures — most obviously via the Vortex fabric's dimpling across the shorts' outer plane. Like with a golf ball or some deep carbon rims, these dimples manage the turbulent lamina of air that runs along the shorts' surface, preventing its premature release into pockets of drag-inducing dead air. This is complemented with a compressive stretch from the Forza fabric on the inner thighs, which incorporates 30% Lycra in order to ensure that your ride is both wind- and restriction-free.

The shorts use the women's version the beloved Progetto X2 Air Seat Pad, which returns from last year with only one, minor change. Its surface is softer, which means it now presents a more gentle face to your perineum. It retains its bacteriostatic properties, seamless construction, four-way stretch, and ventilating, perforated foam layer. The perforated viscous comfort inserts also enjoy an encore performance, so your sensitive areas will enjoy riding over all manner of terrain.

Last year's model featured Castelli's upgraded Giro3 integrated grip bands at the hem, but it shouldn't surprise you at this point that Castelli couldn't leave well enough the hell alone, upgrading these yet again. The new Giro Air has the same perfectly flat, stay-in-place grip, but with less mass, which no doubt contributes to the claimed overall weight loss of 17 grams and definitely reduces the aerodynamic footprint. The new band is wider, almost equaling the length of a typical Euro-slammed road stem, and every square millimeter of the material acts as the gripping agent. No silicone gel print here.

The lower mass means the leg bands are also pretty transparent, which may initially be a turn-off, but will likely take off as it appears in the pro peloton. In this case, it's important to note that "pro" isn't short for "UV protection," so we recommend a bit of sunscreen applied a few minutes before suiting up. For low-light situations when UV damage isn't an issue, the shorts also incorporate some reflective elements to help keep you visible during the twilight criteriums of late summer or early morning training rides in spring.

  • Progetto X2 chamois
  • Dimpled fabrics to control airflow
  • Giro3 grippers

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Natural Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

I love my Castelli bike shorts!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

I'm very glad that I read all of the reviews before selecting my size, because the re viewers were =right. You need to order a full size larger than usual. I usually order medium, I'm 5'7", 130 lbs. I purchased the large, and they are even a bit snug, but wearable. If you want a more relaxed fit, I suggest you get 2 sizes larger. I know...crazy

Solid Chammy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are still relatively new in my cham repetoire (~ 1 year), but so far they're still super tight (read: don't chafe) and the cham has the perfect amount of padding.
Fit: I ordered a M, and usually wear a US 2-4, or small, so I would recommend ordering up a size.
Will definitely be investing in another pair.

I'm 5'8" and weigh 135 lbs. Should I go with medium or large size? I don't mind snug, but don't want to struggle to get the shorts on.

Hi Beth, Castelli runs small and cycling short sizing can be tricky but give us a call or chat in, we can compare the fit of these to other cycling shorts you've work to get the right size.

Look great BUT run SMALL

  • Size Bought: M

These bike shorts look great I loved the red and white highlights and the midweight pad. Sadly--they are going back and all the Larges are sold out--tells me the majority are leaning towards wearing a large. I typically order small in shorts as a like a snugger fit but this med. would barely go over the legs--Bye Bye

Decent chamois

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I ordered several pairs of cycling shorts for my upcoming century ride. I really needed a better chamois than the current PI shorts I had been wearing. I was excited about these based on the reviews, but after trying on the shorts and testing them by sitting in them on a hard surface (not actually riding), I found the chamois to be pretty good, but not quite as good as another pair I had ordered. I ended up liking the Louis Garneau's neo power the best.

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I own 2 pairs of these shorts. Really, I want to own every color and throw the rest of my shorts away. These are hands down the best shorts I have ever worn and I have worn many brands. These are a perfect balance of light weight with a perfect chamois, not to thick or too thin. I am always tugging and pulling at my other shorts, but these never move. I have rode 100 miles in these and never had to adjust them. The leg bands are light and "different", but they work just fine. The colors on the leg band are not vividly bright.

love this short

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: med

this short fits snug with the feel of compression. i like it... and i did order a size up.. i'm 5'2" and wear a size 8. i bought a med. i could have gone with a large even. but this is good. i love the light grip around the leg.

Thanks for the feedback Michele! Glad the shorts have worked well for you.

Best chamois

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Castelli makes my favorite chamois for endurance riding and climbing. I wear a small across all brands and sometimes an xs. All my castelli shorts are a small but these really do run smaller in the waist and ride lower. I agree with others to size up, and I wish I had. They are loosening up but all of the seams in this particular style makes them really snug with less give. I have the black and white and love the look! Once you get the size down they are awesome!

Focus on your ride in these shorts

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

Excellent quality non-bib option perfect for long hours in the saddle. Waistband and leg bands do not ride up or bunch in any way. Once on, you won't have to adjust them on the ride. Chamois is high-quality, comfortable and cut very well. Castelli typically runs small overall for me, as was the case with these shorts. Order one size up from your US size.

A Safe Bet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: small

Though my girlfriend had no real intentions to up her aero ante, she loves these shorts and the pad in them. She wishes she got the bib straps, but oh well.

Unanswered Question

Can someone describe the chamois? Looking for solid pad type not the divided looking pad.

Best shorts, EVER

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

The bad is so comfortable, hugs my bum perfectly on and off the saddle. The material the shorts are made out of is flexible, breathable and light. They are my favorite shorts, ever! Definitely, order a size up for best fit.

Love the shorts; might want to size up

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

The shorts are made from a light-weight, compressive fabric. The chamois is a comfortable as any I've ever used. The fit is super, the grip bands are comfortable, and they look great on! I can't say enough good about these shorts. I have 35" hips and am typically an XS or S. I ordered up to a Medium and the fit is perfect.

Excellent shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These shorts are the best I ever worn and I will most likely buy another pair.
They fit like another skin and the chamois is perfect in every way.

great shorts

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: Runs small

Gave as a gift- " I love these shorts! I have used these a few times and the chamois is just right! I used them the first time on a 40 mile ride with no problem. They are comfortable and the perfect length for me. Looking to buy another pair! I did buy a size up.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I loved these shorts when I got them, they fit great and looked great so I was really psyched to have a new pair of shorts. Didn't take long, though, to develop the first saddle sore I've ever had in 14 years of riding. Looking closely at the chamois this time I noticed the edges are not sewn down flat but have a 1/4 inch of fabric loose all the way around. Shoddy construction on Castellis part. Now I've been forced to sit out on nice days that won't last much longer! Never ever again. My pair of $136 shorts are in the trash...

I can't seem to find it...What length is the inseam?

Never got a real chance to wear them

I ordered a M in the pants and they fit perfect. So I ordered a M in the shorts, I couldn't even get them close to on. Might want to order a size up.

    THESE are the shorts!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I feel like I've tried them all, trying to find a perfect short/chamois that worked for the long rides. THIS IS IT!! I rode today, 55 miles and never once had to readjust because of an ill fit or a sore behind. Thankfully I bought all three colors 'cause this is my short from now on! Kudos - perfection!
