Free Aero Race 4 Limited Edition Bib Short

Designers at Castelli took things seriously when they teamed up with Team Sky to engineer the Free Aero Race 4 Limited Edition Bib Shorts. This meant taking trips all over France, England, and Belgium to gather every bit of feedback possible to fine-tune these race-ready bibs. The result: a feather-light aerodynamic bib that combines Castilli's Vortex dimpled fabric to slice through the wind and gain every second of free speed you can, paired with Forza fabric that stretches gently around your muscles for a next to skin fit. While you may be familiar with the Free Aero Race 4 from previous years, the 2019 sees a few upgrades above years past — like a new leg gripper that pairs with the lie-flat raw-cut edge, with vertical silicone stripes to lock your hem in place, along with upgrades to last year's fabrics.

Seams have been updated to dial in the fit for comfort, so the short tapers to your body for a flattering profile. On top, the bib straps have been re-engineered to help you stay cooler, with stripe-mesh that's built to keep you cooler than before, and lie flat for a sleek silhouette under your favorite jersey. They're finished off with the kind of support from beneath that we expect from Castelli — the Progetto X2 Air seamless chamois that features buttery-soft surface fabric that's gentle against your most sensitive anatomy, and cushions you with perforated multi-density foam that soaks up harsh vibrations from the road, while allowing sweat to escape so you feel fresh through every mile.

  • Slice through the wind with these aerodynamic bibs
  • Dimpled Vortex fabric reduces drag while you ride
  • Bibs contour to you thanks to Forza fabric on inner leg
  • Stripe-mesh uppers let fresh air in up top
  • Lock your hems in place with vertical silicone gripper
  • Flat-lock stitching reduces chafing and boosts comfort
  • Cushion your sit bones with soft and supportive Progetto X2 Air

Note: Castelli has a "Euro" slimmer fit. We suggest ordering at least one size larger than your normal US size.
How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Natural Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

My Most Comfortable Bibs

Definitely looked a lot smaller than what I was expecting when I got these bibs. But I HAVE TO SAY, these are my MOST COMFORTABLE biking shorts. I love the fit and the padding is heavenly. The straps feel a bit on the thin side, but I think I'm just used to thicker ones.

Run small on waist area

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Overall once you manage to go through the opening in the waist area, the bodice fits fine. It is comfortable for riding. What is not comfortable is walking with them, the padding is a little too big on the inner side of thighs.

Love these shorts. Run on the smaller side, but Castelli always does. They did take a little more wiggling to get on than usual, but they fit perfectly and look amazing. Chamois has been great for spending a few hours at a time on the trainer this weekend. Love the color too - just a little bit of purple to be fun, but it's dark and subtle so I don't feel like it's going to clash with all my fun jerseys

I returned this product before using it

I've been wearing Castelli BodyPaint shorts and bibs for years and love them. But they are no longer made, so I tried the Free Aero Race 4. Yeah. I get it. Race kit should be tight. But, this is ridiculous. I ordered size M, which is what I have been ordering for years, and I haven't gained weight or grown taller since then. It is practically impossible to get these things on. Not only is the overall cut very small, but the hems are so sticky that you can't just pull them on because they catch on your skin. So, here you are: squirming to get into the shorts and having to roll the hem so it wouldn't tug all the while. Once you manage to get the bibs on, the straps dig it. This is because, unlike BodyPaint which has comfy, stretchy, flat ribbon straps, the Aero has reinforced hems on the sides of the straps. The cut in the front is like a man's: rather than the "waist" being cut straight across, it dips into a downward curve. Now, I could stand to lose 5 lbs, but if you have any fat whatsoever, the cut and the tight fit make your belly stick out. The chamois cut into my inner thigh when I walked. Now, I get it: race kits should be tight. But, honestly, friends, to what extent does techno-fabrics contribute to fast race times compared to the little bit of extra training to get better fit? Even if you consider the psychological factor of wearing fancy race shorts to give you that extra boost, I don't think these shorts are the ones to pick. So, I say forgo the expense and impossible fit of the Castelli Free Aero 4 Race shorts and just train a little harder.

Lol, love the review
