Kick winter around.

The Castelli Estremo 2 Shoe Covers are the nuclear option of the Italian manufacturer's anti-element shoe cover line. The Italian estremo of their name translates to precipitation, wind, and temperatures as low as 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme, indeed.

The Estremo 2s are made from a windproof, water-resistant, and insulating rubbery material that tops Castelli's offerings in all categories of winter protection except for water-resistance. Even then, though, the only thing more waterproof is straight neoprene. The rear zips are waterproofed, and the rubberized sole is durable enough to stand up to the wet, cold abuse of the winter road.

The Castelli Estremo 2 Shoe Covers are available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large in the colors Black/white and Black/yellow fluo. Please note that they are not compatible with mountain bike shoes.

Huge Disappointment...

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

...from an otherwise fantastic brand. The negative reviews on this item are for good reason. Fit is entirely off -- too tight in some areas, too loose in others, holes do not align with cleats, even where the material stitching/seams come together is exposed in places, likely to cause a failure (rip, fray, etc). If you're like me and Castelli is your go-to... look elsewhere for an all weather shoe cover.

On a positive note, Backcountry's return policy is outstanding. Thank you.

I love Castelli products! They really do make me feel like I've got an unfair advantage. The Estremo Shoe Covers showcase great detail in construction and provide a nice snug fit around the ankle and sole area. The zippers are probably my favorite part. They feel sturdy and secure.

Really strange fit

  • Fit: Runs large

and the yellow/black graphics seem like they would get really dirty. But I returned them before even using them because the fit was so strange. Loose some places, huge in others.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Very poor quality. Seams ripped while trying to put them over my shoes. After 20 pain staking minutes, I finally had them in place. The cleat cut out is totally in the wrong position, and you end up walking on the fabric, even though I purchased the correct size cover for my shoes. Once on, they have a seam over the top of the flex point of the ankle. I had blisters on both ankles after 30 miles. My best advice, AVOID these shoe covers especially at this cost. The guys at CC were great however and I am returning them. Thanks guys!!

Way too small

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Small

These are so small, I've actually never been able to use them. What a waste of money. The fabric is so stiff that it doesn't enable them to be slipped on.

OK Shoe cover

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

Actually bought these shoe covers on another site for a steep discount hoping I scored a deal. I got the Large size because my shoes are 10/44 Fizik shoes. The fit is tight and takes a little time and effort to get them on. I do like that the bottom of the covers go around the bottom of the sole to keep water from rising up into the shoe. I wore them on a ~35 mile ride in mid 30-40 degrees on post rain wet roads. They kept my feet pretty dry, but my toes were still cold. After the first ride when I took them off I noticed the stitching came undone on the bottom part where the red fabric meets the bootie. The hole was probably about an inch long and the same was about to happen on the other one. Other people have reviews here addressing a similar problem. I'm glad I got them on clearance and that my mom could sew them back together, but otherwise the quality is just not there for the high price these booties command. Perhaps I should have gotten the next size up. These are my first piece of Castelli gear, a little disappointing. They also could benefit from a strap on the heal to help get them on. I will keep them only for rain shoes. I ended up buying the Gore-Wear booties that are very warm and slip on in a fraction of the time.

Poor quality

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large/

I ripped them whilst test fitting them on my shoes.
A seam was improperly sewn and I can fortunately repair it but am dismayed by the poor quality control. An additional reinforcement in the inseam would have prevented this snafu. They are a very snug fit and might probably not survive the season. Glad I got them on sale. I would return them but I would rather ride with warm feet. A waste of money.

Pretty effective shoe covers

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I wore these shoe covers on a windy, rainy March ride. It was a cool 49 degrees with rain and 5 - 7 mph winds when I started my ride which would end 31 miles later. By the time I'd finished the rain was gone and the temperature had risen to 55 degrees.

I had chosen to wear my Giordana Merino Wool socks with my workhorse Shimano SH-R191 road shoes.

Getting into the Estremo shoe covers takes time and patience. You basically have to work them over your cleats then the straps alternately. I suggest trying to position the covers completely over the front portion of the shoe (and cleat) before trying to fit the heel section on. Also, make sure the heel does not go too far past the heel cutout section or the zipper will bunch and not work properly.

So now I had the Estremo shoe covers firmly in place and started my journey into the rain. By the time I finished the first 5 miles my feet were soaked.

In retrospect, I probably should have put the shoe covers under the leggings on my Mondo Evo Thermal Bib Tights. Because the rain and spray from my wheels just ran down the leggings into my shoes. So, live and learn.

On the plus side, my feet stayed warm the entire ride in spite of being wet.

One comment on the fit: I am 6' approximately 200lbs with a muscular frame. I wear size 48 in road shoes (I prefer the extra toe space Shimano shoes typically provide) and purchased these shoe covers in 2XL. Four stars.

Great looking but are they really warm?

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I purchased a pair and they were too small. The specs say they are warm to 28 degrees F. Never got to test them because I returned them and ordered the Garneau (very happy with them).
