Better For Me In The Cold
- I've put it through the wringer
I bought this Castelli Pro Mesh Baselayer two years ago for its advertised use as a warm weather undershirt, but that just didn't work out. It seemed to me, that the fabric trapped warm air next to your skin in the spaces between the mesh and your jersey and inhibited evaporation and cooling. Thinking that property might be better suited for cold weather, I tried using it as a base layer under various brands of long sleeve undershirts, and it worked great! The pockets in the mesh do trap your body heat under whatever covering you're wearing over it; for instance, a Craft, Castelli or Gore long sleeve undershirt and a Castelli Nelmezzo ROS jersey. That combination keeps me comfortable on the road from the upper 30's to the upper 40's. Below that I use a heavier undershirt over the mesh or put on a warmer winter jacket. For warmer winter temperatures (50-60 degrees), I'm comfortable in a Pro Mesh Baselayer under a lightweight undershirt and a short sleeve jersey with-or-without arm warmers depending on the temperature. For me, the mesh baselayer works so well in the cold that I now base my cold weather layering around it. In warm weather, however, it never sees the light of day. I'm 5'11' and weigh 165 pounds. A medium fits me as it should, nice and close.

bought the L/XL which typically fits in most brands . Shirt was way to restrictive to be comfortable. Had trouble getting it on and more trouble taking it off.

I'm about the same size as you (5'11"/173lbs) and normally take XL in Castelli. I have 2 of these in L/XL, wear them for all my summer rides, and find them extremely comfortable. The point of a fishnet like this is to trap air pockets between your jersey and your skin, and to do that it must sit snugly on the skin. Besides when you're on a bicycle your torso isn't moving around a lot as it does in many other activities. Yes putting it on can be a little tricky, but once it is on I don't notice them. WARNING: if you wash them in very hot water as I did by mistake the mesh turns brown, though the collar and hem stay white.

It fits proper. Your just not accustomed to this garmets feel. I am 5'11 175lbs and wear the same size your saying is too small. It took me a ride to get acclimated to it and get the knack for taking it off, but it fits.
