Description

Why We Like The Alpha RoS 2 Jacket

For those of us who have not been swooned by months of indoor training during winter, Castelli’s new Alpha RoS 2 Jacket provides a feature-heavy barrier against nature’s bite, ensuring the miles are logged even in the harshest conditions. Continuing Castelli’s impeccable lineage of inclement weather, performance clothing, the Alpha RoS 2 gets a double-layered Alpha construction comprising an inner insulation layer and outer Gore-Tex Infinium wind and water barrier. The layers provide protection down to 23 degrees F as well as superior wind and water resistance to brace against pocket showers or a ride-long drencher.

Castelli manages to engineer subtle and effective traits into the Alpha RoS 2 that, at first glance go unnoticed, but act as welcomed finishing touches you’ll appreciate during mixed weather riding. Further adding to the comfort and warmth characteristics are the high neck, which prevents cold air rushing on the chest, and the double layer cuffs that seal out water and wind, as well as allowing for expert fitting under gloves. A water-resistant zipper and taped shoulder seams seal out areas that are prone to water ingress, while discreet back flaps vent out heat to maintain comfort on rides up to 50 degrees F and during intense interval sessions. Castelli adds drainage holes to the pockets, which provide an extra dose of security compared to the mesh openings of previous jackets, and a zipper side-pocket corrals valuables for the long haul.

  • Winter-ready cycling jacket faces the elements in comfort and style
  • Double layer Alpha construction insulates and shields from nature’s bite
  • Gore-Tex wind and water barrier also provide stretch in riding position
  • Water-resistant zipper and double-layer cuff discourage water entry
  • Upper-back venting channels manage heat buildup while training
  • Reflect drain holes on pockets won’t slow you down
  • Rated from 23-50 degrees F

With arm warmers and/or a base layer, this jacket works well for me for road cycling into the mid 20s. Amazingly good at keeping out wind.

I bought the Castelli Alpha RoS 2 Jacket as a replacement for an older version, to which I am still desperately hanging on! Like the previous one, this jacket provides excellent coverage and overall protection without the bulk. The Gore-Tex layer really works well. I have worn this in temps well below freezing with a base layer or two and have been completely protected. The double-zip closure is great, as it allows you to unzip the outer layer to cool off a bit without completely exposing your torso. The three back pockets are easy to reach, have flexible openings and are highly preferable to some brands' two-pocket designs. The jackets washes great (in cold water) and air dries quickly. I hope to have this jacket for many years.

I read the reviews and sized up as recommended for my build…purchased the XL. The sleeves are too long and the neck is large as well. This jacket is not form fitting for my regular body type. I will try again in a size L. Update: the size L was a perfect fit. Initial ride wearing a merino wool base layer for 2hrs @ 32F was successful. Will give it a full review far more rides.

This is my second Alpha jacket from Castelli. I have the original Alpha jacket that's been working great for the last 6 winters, and I decided to go for the upgraded Alpha RoS 2 jacket this winter. It's been a nice upgrade. The fit is better and the jacket is lighter. I typically only wear this jacket when the temps dip below 40 degrees, and it's plenty warm with only a light base layer. I can't speak specifically to the waterproofness of this jacket (since if it's cold enough to need this jacket, and raining, I'm riding indoors), but I do have the light version of this jacket (same material on the outer) that I have worn in light rain conditions, and it's done a good job of keeping the moisture out; so I have no reservations with regard to the waterproofness of this jacket. I wear medium in all Castelli, and this jacket fits true to size for me. Remember, it's form fitting, and since the material doesn't offer a lot of stretch, if you're not of a specific body type, I can see why people struggle with sizing. One thing I would caution against if deciding to size up is that the sleeves and neck will also size up. So you may end up in a situation with ridiculously long sleeves if you go too far. Overall, one of the best pieces of cycling kit that I own.

I am usually a Medium, and the sizing chart says I should be a Small. But since Castelli runs small, I tried a Medium. I could not even fit in it. I returned it and ordered a large, which was still too tight, although the sleeves and back seemed long. I gave up, realizing that this brand / jacket does not seem to be made for most individuals.

Simply stated, the Alpha RoS2 is the best cycling jacket I have ever had. I have used it regularly for the last month, in temperature range of 35-50 deg F. I wear only a very thin, lightweight merino wool base layer underneath and that is overkill for temperatures above 45 deg F. The jacket keeps my torso and arms warm, but not too warm, just right. Sleeve length is great (I have long arms). I originally ordered a size L, but that was way too tight, so returned for an XL and that was perfect as it allows me to add a base layer. It is snug without being too tight. Very high quality construction. Exactly the jacket I needed to be able to ride year round in the Northeast US. Castelli knocked it out of the park with this jacket!

This jacket is similar to the assos intermediate although not as well co stricter but much cheaper. Perfect for mid 40’ riding and up with a base layer. A little breathable so you won’t overheat. Likely not good in the mid 30’s. Nice bright color for safety in red. Overall happy.

Nice jacket but sized for a child

This is a really nice jacket but it sized for a child. I bought the large size for my husband who is a slim 5' 9" and 150 lbs- a medium or small size usually fits but after reading the reviews I purchased the large. When it arrived it was comical- couldn't even fit around him! So I shelled out the money for return postage and re-ordered the XXL thinking surely it would fit. It arrived today and no, still too small. This time he could put it on and zip it, but couldn't freely swing his arms. In what world does an XXL size not fit an average to small size man? So I am again paying for return postage and sending this jacket back. Unless you wear a small and can order an XXL- don't bother with this nice jacket.

This jacket is simply the best jacket I have ever worn. I am a huge Castelli fan and rarely buy anything else. Always high quality, great fit (I like a race or snug fit) and value. I was looking for a new cold weather jacket and this didn't disappoint. With a base layer I can easily wear this jacket into the teens or below. Makes for an absolute pleasurable ride as it keeps me warm but allows for temperature regulation so I don't sweat. I like to say there is no bad cycling weather, just bad clothing. With this jacket I have the highest quality clothing to keep me riding in almost any kind of weather between 40 and 10 degrees.

I can't believe that for someone your size a L fit you. I'm 6'2" and 175 and the L I got was so small I couldn't get it on. Just got an XXL and it fits snugly. Are you sure it was a L you got?

AS GOOD AS EVERYONE SAYS

For some reason, I am a dyed-in-the-wool Assos wearer. Assos has a new jacket called the JonDah, that is very similar in design and features to this Castelli jacket (which I've had for about a year now with no complaints). Priced at $780!!! I had to check it out (Assos, like CC, gives free shipping to and from). I have to say, the materials on the Assos are simply stunning, as is the fit and finish. HOWEVER, the Assos doesn't do anything better than this Castelli at less than HALF THE PRICE! In other words, I'd be just as warm and comfortable in the Assos as I already am in the Castelli! So I just returned the JonDah with my compliments! So for those concerned about anyone here saying "pricey," be advised the Castelli is simply a great value. I've learned the hard way over the years that the extra dollars look one way before the purchase, and entirely different afterwards. I've never regretted spending the extra money to get the right garment, but I've regretted it plenty if I spent less and the garment didn't perform. As far as sizing, if you are a Summit member you get free shipping from CC for returns. So there is no reason you cannot end up with the exact right size for you at no additional charge. I'm 6' 3" and 185 (i.e. thin and I like a snug fit); a large fits me fine because I live in the Southwest and it rarely gets below freezing out this way so I don't need a heavy base layer. If I did, I would size up to XL. Again, any manufacturer's "sizing" is just a starting point--use it as a guide and then replace if necessary with the next 1 or 2 up or down. Ride on!

You must like things skin tight! Can't imagine a L fitting you at your size and weight.

This jacket is a game changer and the fit is darn near perfect in a riding position. Dont judge the fit standing straight up. I have used it just below freezing with a base layer and lightweight jersey and it was too warm and would have been fine with my craft poly. The jacket breathes well and the best part is being able to unzip one or both zippers on the long climbs. 6'2" athletic 190lbs and fit is perfect in xxl to allow allow base layers. Not too loose and not too tight.

Pricey but worth it. Perfect fit. High quality constrains materials. The dual layers with zippers work well for temperature management. With a thermal base layer (Under Armor 3.0), the jacket is warm down to mid-20 degree temps on a cloudy day on a relaxed gravel ride. Also tried it in freezing rain in low to mid-30 temps and it kept me warm and dry with an Under Armor 2.0 base layer. I can see it working well with a thin short sleeve base layer into the mid 40s. Great recommendation from Kyle Brown.

As my deep winter jacket gave its last full measure, I needed a stellar replacement and have found it in the Castelli Alpha RoS 2. Having had awesome experiences with the Castelli Alpha RoS Light jacket, I hoped that the bigger sibling would deliver in the below freezing morning darkness. Wow, even with the “Light” experience, I wasn’t overly confident that upper teens to low twenties would be a happy place. Seriously; this jacket ROCKS. Vary the base layer and I have a tool that picks up at 44F where “Light” drops out. Have explored very heavy to summer sleeveless base layers, two layers (base and Alpha) as the right stuff. Just as happy spinning the wind and weather at 45F as I am at 25F! Love how the cuffs integrate with gloves, over, under or middle! Don’t pass Go, don’t collect…just buy it already, with zero regrets! For sizing, I am 6’1’’ / 175 lbs and am really happy with XL for both Alpha RoS versions. May have to become a RoS fanboy, as this my third Castelli RoS piece (Perfetto Light gloves as well) and the perfection is amazing

I wear predominantly Assos, Castelli, Giordana and Mavic bike clothing. I have a good amount of Castelli items. I have always purchased in Large size. Due to other reviews, I sized up to XL. This jacket is very very undersized and I don’t know why Castelli changed cut and sizing. So, buy at least a size larger and don’t be surprised if it is still very small.

This is your jacket for insulation and protection on deep-winter rides. With only a summer-weight, short sleeve base layer underneath this jacket is almost too much. On alpine climbs, in 25-30 degree F (at moderate riding intensity), I'll have to unzip to the base layer to avoid overheating. And on the descents, I'll zip up and not even have a goosebump. The double-layer construction allows your upper body to laugh at the frigid air moving over it, and the water-resistant fabric keeps you dry when riding over snowmelt or under passing rainstorms.

This

What's with that big, jagged, hole-looking thing on the left side of your neck (right side in picture)? UPDATE: never mind. I saved the photo locally and zoomed WAY in and see the collar is zipped open and that's your base layer and helmet strap.

Not cheap...but great value! Innovative cuffs work well with gloves and keep the wind out. Nice thermal inner lining with wind proof shell. Offers option to unzip the outside to let in air. Only warning...it runs small. I’m 5’9” and 160 lbs and the medium I bought is gonna motivate me not to gain another pound.
