As inspiration for the garish Gelato Bib Shorts, Capo cites a pretty damn grueling gran fondo named for a former US pro. Besides the obvious benefits that the high compression and low weight of the Italian Lycra used in the shorts' body would grant over the course of a climb like, say, the intimidating King Ridge, we really can't see the connection. But that's okay, because the 12-panel construction — just one panel shy of Capo's most complex pattern (we have no idea how the Drago sneaks in a 13th panel) — and the seven generous centimeters of compression at the leg bands speak for themselves.
The Gelato's color pattern also speaks for itself, and it has a lot to say. In fact, its on-trend pink/blue/yellow colorway is loud enough to drown out the collective drivetrain hum of most mass-start gran fondos, and the light colors of the leg bands look especially complementary when set against the well-tanned legs of mid-summer. That skin tone in July represents countless base miles spent working our asses off under the sun in the preceding six months, so yeah: we're gonna show it off.
The shorts are finished with lightweight mesh bibs and the D4 EVO chamois from Elastic Interface Technology. The chamois' topography is (thankfully) far less brutal than the punishing gran fondo that inspired Capo's design choices for the Gelato, but — where the event's climbs and dirt roads punish your body — the chamois' variable topography of foam padding nurses you through countless hours in the saddle.
