eeWings Crank Arms with Stages Power

By now, many of you are familiar with the eeWings cranks from Cane Creek offering a stiff, lightweight, and durable alternative to the carbon cranks on the market. It gives us all a chance to say goodbye to chipped, cracked, or otherwise beat up carbon cranks and say hello to some gorgeous titanium that weighs about the same as carbon units while coming in 20-30% stiffer. In fact, the only thing that we could think of that would take these puppies over the top would be the addition of measuring wattage and that's now covered with Cane Creek reaching out to the powermeter experts at Stages Cycling. If you value a bantamweight crank that can withstand rugged trails and let you get the most out of your training and racing, invest in a set of eeWings Crank Arms with Stages Power and you're covered.

The eeWings cranks are another collaboration between Cane Creek and Craig Edwards of eeBrakes fame. He originally designed a similar titanium crank, dubbed Sweet Wings, way back in 1994 and at the time they were the lightest and stiffest cranks available. In fact, much of its designs and features were 10-15 years ahead of its time and help influence crank designs to this day. Cane Creek originally wanted to bring the eeWings to the road market but realized that the titanium and build would be more apt for cross country, aggressive trail, and enduro mountain bikers. These cranks aren't phased by rock strikes, ankle rub, or flying trail debris and you can have them looking like new again by brushing them up with a green scouring pad.

Much like the eeBrakes we also carry from Cane Creek, we're super impressed by its flyweight construction, attention to detail, and absolutely zero compromises. To achieve this, the eeWings arms are constructed of Grade 9 Ti-3AI-2.5V, while the Hirth joint and chainring interface, spindle, pedal inserts, fastening bolt and washer, preload bolt, and chainring bolts are Grade 5 Ti-6AI-4V Titanium. Another thoughtful and high-quality feature includes the 7075 CNC aluminum bottom bracket preloader, no plastic and wood screw parts here. The crank weighs in a mere 400 grams which are within the weight range of the premium carbon cranks but are a claimed 20% to 30% stiffer. Cane Creek is so confident in the eeWings quality and durability that it backs the cranks with a 10-year limited warranty. The arms are available in 170 and 175mm length and its 30mm spindle is compatible with many bottom brackets on the market. The chainring interface is for SRAM X-SYNC Direct Mount Chainrings.

Of course, the powermeter itself is worth a mention too which only adds a nominal 15-grams to the crank's base weight. Tucked inside this little pod are strain gauges and an updated accelerometer that measures force and rotation delivering the power readings to your head unit with a claimed accuracy of +/- 1.5%, which is right in line with other quality power meters on the market. The meter also incorporates Stage's Active Temperature Compensation (ATC), which compensates for the natural expansion and contraction of the strain gauges and adjusts the readings depending on external temperature. ATC accounts for those temperature changes without requiring you to stop pedaling in order to zero the system. Other weather factors to consider are the rain and wet, and Stages protects the power meter with a water resistance rating of IPX7, keeping the internal electronics dry during rainy rides and bike washes. Stages meters are mountain and 'cross bike tough even through creek crossings and Team Sky post-race power washings, and the IPX7 rating gives the meter protection from the wet in 1-meter deep water for up to 30 minutes. The power meter is powered by a readily available CR2032 battery and offers up to 175 hours of riding with data, with an easy to replace and simple Philips head screw access point. Gen 3 models receive upgraded Bluetooth LE and ANT+ radios which offer a 6-time improvement of data transmission strength so your head unit never misses a watt. Additionally, wireless firmware downloads are available to keep the power meter up to date.
