With the re-design of the Super Record rear derailleur and levers, Campagnolo also re-worked the crankset to create a complete Super Record RS gruppo. Like Super Record, RS uses a titanium spindle which keeps weight low while keeping strength high. It also uses alloy bolts that thread through the big chainring directly into the small ring — this eliminates the chainring nut to make installation easier and the final product lighter.
So what is different in the new RS series? Well, besides updating the graphics to include the venerable tricolore Italian flag, the crankset is now compatible with three chainring configurations, 50/34, 52/36, and 53/39. Now you're able to switch between standard and compact rings without the necessity of owning separate cranksets. This has been enabled by a complete redesign of the spider which is now features 4 arms.
With input from professional teams, who began using the gruppo after the Tour Down Under, the chainrings have also received subtle but effective redesigns. The slightly tweaked shape of the teeth allows the Super Record crankset to function even while the chain is fully crossed from your 29 to your 53. This means that you actually have access to all 22 gear ratios. Additionally, shifting between small and large chains is smoother.
The Campagnolo Super Record RS Carbon/Ti Crankset is available in three chainring configurations: 50/34t, 52/36t, and 53/39t. Each configuration comes in either 170mm, 172.5mm, or 175mm lengths.
