Description

You know Shamal?

When Campagnolo introduced the Shamal, it was the shape of things to come, quite literally. The aero-shaped alloy rim would kick-start the development of aero alloy rims, followed by aero carbon rims, which more or less brings us to present day, and Campy’s latest iteration of the Shamal, the Shamal Mille C17. The biggest change here is the wider rim, which adds 2mm internally to let tires sit wider for gains in efficiency and comfort.

The Mille’s different enough from previous generations that the name may well be the only thing in common. The most obvious change is the black finish –it’s not just for looks, though. Underneath the hard-ano surfacing lies Campagnolo’s new spiral-shaped brake track, which offers consistent, incredibly powerful braking, wet or dry.

Inside the wide, carbon fiber hub bodies reside Campy’s ceramic Ultra Smooth Bearings, or USB. They’re not the best-in-class CULT bearings you’ll find in the Bora wheels, but they’re 50% smoother than standard, steel bearings, which translates directly to less work on your part.

  • The aero aluminum wheel that started it all
  • New rim width increases comfort and rolling efficiency
  • Oxidized ceramic brake track improves stopping
  • USB ceramic bearings are industrial-grade smooth
  • Aluminum spokes boost stiffness without adding grams
  • G3 spoke lacing and asymmetrical rims add more stiffness
  • Carbon hub bodies for efficient hammering and spinning

Can you use standard pads with these wheels?

No you must use Campagnolo blue pads. Otherwise the brake surface coating will come off.

Are there other pad offerings for these wheel? I have the blue factory pads and they scream!! on my fronts, I have cleaned them and towed them in but still very very very loud.

Not sure what kind of screaming you're experiencing, but I know the Mavic wheels with Exalith coating sound like a Formula 1 car in the distance --it's a neat sound. Since these new black coatings by Mavic, Hed, and Campy/Fulcrum seem to add texture to the braking surface, one would expect more sound. Anyhow, my guess is that the screaming you hear is the normal sound of those rims.

Actually, I just read the comment below (MIC102441954) and he indicates that pad adjustment will quiet the rims down significantly.

Noticeably better braking

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

All the usual Campy great quality and durability, but this wheel is all about the braking. It is noticeably better. Even in wet. I've used this wheel on dry and moderately wet roads, but no downpours yet. The braking is superb in both. Smooth. Not grabbing. Better than any ordinary aluminum brake track. No wear or discolouration yet but it's not been long. Time will tell. Some pad noise when new on back brake in the form of a high pitch squeal on light braking, but I toed in the back brake and it's hardly ever there now. I have not used anything but the supplied blue pads. The new Mavic anodized sidewall is supposed to be the same treatment, but it has a perpendicular pattern. Guys who ride them tell me the braking on the Mavics is amazing but the are very noisy. Like a high decibel squeal with a whizzing buzz. These are very quiet. They trade increased rim cost by using USB rather than ceramic bearings. But... can you tell? not me. Have a tiny dent from a rock in side of rim, so they are not bullet-proof. Great wheel. Using Conti 4KS 25. with latex tubes and it's smooth yet stiff. Love 'em so far!
