Chorus 12 Ergopower Shifter & Hydraulic Caliper
We've always lauded the Campagnolo Super Record groupset for its precise shifting, tasteful aesthetics, and superior ergonomics, and the new Chorus 12 groupset brings those qualities to a broader audience while adding a 12th gear in the process. The new shifters improve ergonomics over the previous generation by offering customizable lever reach with a setting for smaller hand sizes, as well as a refined lever shape with a slight outward curve that feels more natural. The disc brake calipers are identical to the ones used for Record and Super Record ensuring there's no sacrifice to braking performance at the Chorus level.
Like the previous iteration of Chorus Ergopower shifters, the 12-speed version has dedicated up and downshift levers for positive gear changes in either direction. They also feature Ultra-Shift, which provides multiple-cog shifting capacity. Ultra-Shift allows you to dump up to three harder gears in the sprint and upshift up to five cogs for easier pedaling when you're going into the base of a climb a little hot.
Campy worked tirelessly to remove any lag in cable pull while shifting for instant derailleur engagement on the front and rear. As such, shifting is faster and more precise even while under a load. With the Chorus’s rapid shifting, it makes swapping the chain between the rings easy and intuitive both on the hoods and in the drops. Add in the trim adjustment that lets you use all 24 gear combinations without chain rubbing and you have a serious rival to any electronic system.
Another returning favorite is the Vari-Cushion hood design, which incorporates varying densities of silicone on the inside for additional cushion that takes the sting out of rougher roads. The previous generation's waffle shape is omitted in favor of grooved channels at the top to provide plenty of grip whether riding in the rain or during long summer climbs.
The levers distinct and comfy shape simply disappears in your hands and is the ergonomic king in our books. Paired with an optimized brake pivot point and signature double curve lever blade for a powerful braking position in the hoods and drops and you have some supremely comfortable levers while shifting, slowing down, or just cruising in the pack.
Compared to Record and Super Record shifters, the Chorus Ergopower Shifters make some concessions namely using heavier steel and alloy components instead of titanium and carbon. This results in about 20 more grams over the Record shifter, though with significant cost savings over the Record group, we’re able to trim weight more meaningfully elsewhere.
Finally, as we mentioned above, the hydraulic brake calipers are the same ones that you'd find in the Record and Super Record groupsets. They use a flat-mount attachment that's specifically fitted for a 160mm rotor up front and a 140mm rotor out back with no need for adapters. The forged aluminum construction uses 22mm pistons for plenty of stopping power, along with magnetic and mechanical return springs for consistency. The revised organic brake pads feature added wings for heat dissipation, and a new wear indicator that visibly shows you when it's time to replace them.
