A new standard in the ‘mini’ category.

What ever happened to the pump peg? Whenever we look at mini-pumps, and the Blackburn AirStik SL is no different, we find ourselves longing for a way to mount a full-size frame pump under the top tube of our bike. They were so easy. Even the plastic Silca pumps were better than most of the mini-pumps of today. Mini-pumps have a problem; the ones that are small enough and light enough to qualify as "mini" don't pump well, and the ones that pump well are too big and cumbersome to qualify as "mini."

Despite all our whining, this AirStik SL is the first mini-pump to catch our attention in a long time. It's light, but still made of aluminum, rather than plastic. It has a solid-feeling head that we don't think we'll break the first time we pump a tire up. And it is small enough to fit in a pocket and gives us little reason to fear it will flop out over bumps.

When we looked more closely, we liked it even more. It is only 157mm long when closed. The pump stroke is 93mm, delivering 1.8 cubic inches of air per stroke. It's not exactly frame pump volume, but it does outshine the SKS Sub 40 (1.6) and Topeak Micro Rocket (1.2). Yes, it's going to take a long time to get the tire up to 110psi, but it will be rideable long before that. And, with the small volume, there will never be that much resistance per stroke.

We wonder if one of the things we like about this pump is that Blackburn hired a suspension fork engineer to work on their pump line. The result is mini-pumps that use the shaft space as an air chamber, which makes the pump action more stable and delivers more air per stroke.

The Blackburn AirStik SL comes with a mount that fits under a bottle cage. The head is designed for Presta valves only. Maximum pressure possible with the pump is 160psi. While this may not be important to you, Blackburn has made the pump so it can be rebuilt rather than tossed when a part breaks. There is a lifetime warranty on the pump. The pump comes in three colors: Black, Carbon, and White. Claimed weight for the AirStik SL is 58g.

  • Solid aluminum construction won’t break after being run over by your buddy’s SUV
  • Can be rebuilt so you have something to do in the offseason
  • Bottle-cage mount included

It works

Had to get a pump I could take on a plane. CO2 not allowed. Didn't want to spend a ton so I gave this one a shot. Very happy. Super light and it will get the job done on a road tire in a reasonable number of pumps. Seems pretty sturdy also. I'd recommend it

    Good for the fast track!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

By design it has appeal but some drawbacks. It is small so when hitting the high pressure it is tough. If you are racing I would say go with a c02, if you are doing long distance then this will work as you can dry your hands and take your time. It is light and built well! I like it for my purpose and it will be in my Jersey pocket for a long time to come.

    Great Little Pump

I bring this with me on longer mtb rides where one C02 could leave me stranded. Easily fits in a fanny pack. Don't expect it to be fast, but its not bad considering it's size!

      Blackburn Airstik SL Pump

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My pump went missing so I was back in the market for yet another pump. Thought I would try the Blackburn Airstik SL Pump. My first impression was the pumps small and light but it did not live up to its expectations. Only takes a presta valve and other pumps at the same price will fit presta and schrader valves. The rubber seal that fits on to the valve is poor because no way of tightening the seal. I struggle to hold the end of the pump firmly when is use. This causes you to rock on the valve and you don?t want that.

I would not buy one again.

      New pump

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently purchased bikes for my wife and myself and obviously a pump is a necessity. I didn't realize how tiny this thing would look next to my XXL frame! We have not had any flats yet but they will come, and when they do it's great to have a pump on hand. I wish it could do both Presta and Schrader valves, that's my only thought that doesn't make this pump perfect.

Not a Highlighter, but a Pump

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This has been my favorite pump when not carrying a hydration pack for years. It's the smallest pump I have found that can actually pump some air and last a long time. For it's size, it does a damn good job of filling up fat MTB tires so you can keep blasting turns. For those saying it takes awhile, this thing is like the size of a Highlighter, it's a pump, not magical. You may have to push post ride beers back 5 minutes, but it beats walking out. Oh yeah it's got a lifetime warranty.

      Great for emergency backup

We still carry a CO2 cartridges and use this to top off or as a back up incase. This doesn't deliver a ton of volume per pump but it fits in a saddle bag, is light and is one of few pumps this size that are rated to 160psi.

      Small and powerful

Fits in my saddle bag and fills my tires... enough said.

        Tiny Tim

this pump is tiny! bought it to throw in my pack because CO2 cartridges never have enough air to fill up a tire all the way. comes with a bike clip if you don't carry it in a pack.

Re: Small Blackburn Airstik does the job

Okay anyone wanting to rock hard tires with a little pump needs a reality check. The pump is great in a pinch. It'll get you home on "softish: tires. If you rest the pump against your leg while pumping it helps. I've just carried an adapter to get high psi at a gas station.

            great emergency pump

This is the smallest & lightest emergency pump i could find, it fits easily in a camelpac and weighs next to nothing, u could also attach it to your bike or put it in a cargo pocket, hell, it is so small you could maybe even store it behind you're ear like a cigarette or pencil.

              great emergency pump
