Description

Brap approved.

Making high-quality helmets designed to protect your noggin at speed isn't anything new for Bell Helmets. Some would call sixty-plus years as old hat, err helmet. If your goals include hurling yourself off a mountain for that all-important footy or to stop a clock, consider donning a Bell Super DH MIPS helmet on your dome.

This particular helmet is all about looking good, feeling fast, and being safe. Most pilots will be wearing goggles to keep the dust and sun's rays at a minimum so a GoggleGuide adjustable visor system allows you to easily manage the visor to accommodate goggles on the pin-it days or sunglasses on more casual sessions. The huge eye-port makes holding eyeglass or goggle frames easy with or without the removable visor installed.

MIPS Spherical is built into the helmet between two different layers of foam, one of a higher-density EPS and one of lower-density EPP. This design allows for a ball-and-socket architecture that can move several millimeters in any direction in the case of impact. The progressive layering of variable EPS better manages the transfer of energies during certain impacts. Much like the other Bell Super helmets, the protective chin-bar attaches and removes easily with no tools required with a simple 3-step connection adding trail riding versatility. Bell designed this helmet to keep you cool on the hottest rides. The helmet has 19 vents with an additional 4 chin-bar vents and 2 brow ports. This overbrow ventilation rushes cool air over the top of the head and draws cool air into the intake ports while exhausting hot air. You'll be surprised how cool this full-face is and let you more easily focus on the fast line without worrying about a hot head.

The helmet meets several certifications and is available in a range of colors and the sizes Small, Medium, and Large. Bell's simple-to-adjust Float Fit DH with Fidlock Buckle makes dialing in the perfect fit an easy affair even with gloves on. X-Static and XT-2 padding combine to provide quick-drying and a soft surface against your skin with real silver fibers preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi so the Super MIPS doesn't smell like a funky locker room.

No-Twist Tri-Glides ensure quick and effortless fit adjustments, keeping straps properly positioned. An integrated camera mount adds seamless integration to capture that gold and if you don't stick the landing, it's designed to breakaway reducing the risk of injury.

  • A full-face helmet for DH and enduro riding
  • Chin-bar provides unidirectional protection
  • X-Static and XT-2 padding keep you cool and funk-free
  • Ventilation system channels air over your head for a cool ride
  • Float Fit DH system allows for quick and easy adjustments
  • Breakaway camera mount offers the best spot of the helmet for video
  • Visor is fully adjustable for goggle and glasses fit
  • MIPS Spherical provides movement in certain crashes that may help reduce injuries

Sound Upgrade from Original DH

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet is a sound upgrade from the original DH edition. My first impression is that it’s more durable, reinforced, and the protection (padding, MIPS) has been upgraded significantly.

The Super DH took the next step to really making first, a full face helmet and then secondly a detachment for more mellow rides. Yes, because of the added protection there is added weight but I can’t say it impacts my riding or comfort. I do think this helmet is more focused towards extreme downhill riding and it shows, it should be quite complimentary to the DH edition for more casual riding.

DH for the win!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

After recently taking a rough slam that dented my Bell 3R Mips helmets I knew I had to get another helmet from Bell. I was happy to walk away from that slam without a concussion only some minor bruising on the body. I was definitely lucky to have a MIPS helmet because it definitely did it’s job and took the impact greatly. I decided to stick with the convertible helmets that Bell makes because they are very convenient and work just as well as a full face. I could definitely vouch for that after the slam I took. I really enjoy the secure fit the super dh has, not to mention the new tech it has for MIPS; you get an extra layer of padding that moves on impact, to keep your mind at ease.

SUPER

This is a SUPER comfortable helmet. It has seen the Tahoe Rim Trail and was great. Wore it for about 4 hours and never felt too heavy or uncomfortable. The sweat guide up front really works well for guiding the sweat off your face. The spherical mips is a great safety addition. I have not used the full face mask yet, but when attached it seems really sturdy. The cheek pads are a little tight even with the thinner pads, but I guess that is for more stability. The magnet chin strap make taking on and off with gloves a breeze. Highly recommend

versatile and packed with tech

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large - my head measures 61 cm around

I'm a big fan of this helmet. If you're an aggressive rider or even just someone looking for extra protection and piece of mind, the combination of a helmet you can "trail ride" all day that carries DH certification as a full face will check all your boxes.

I consider myself to have relatively poor fine motor skills and it's very easy for me to convert the helmet to and from a full-face, which is as easy as securing three latches. The pads are very soft, comfortable, and have anti-microbial properties. I love the simple but effective function of the pad extending out in front of your forehead, so if you sweat a lot, if will pool out in the front and drip down in front of your glasses/goggles. Simple yet effective.

I have yet to test the spherical MIPS in a crash, but I can see how it would be effective. The inner shell, for lack of a more precise term, swivels inside shell surrounding it, in a motion very similar to a ball and socket. The inner shell connects to the helmet with yellow polymer, allowing a little bit of motion.

I can't comment with any certainty on the efficacy of the system, but it is comforting and confidence-inspiring to know I've got the latest technology available protecting my brain.

The fit of the helmet is in line with everything else I've ever tried from Bell, and my tall-ish, round head fits very well inside. If you have more of a narrow head, check out the Giro Switchblade.

Ventilation is more than reasonable considering what kind of helmet this is. It certainly doesn't breathe as well as an XC helmet, but in fairness it's not an XC helmet. My head does sweat more than it does in my Bell 4Forty, but again, that's to be expected. I certainly would not ask Bell to add more ventilation, as it would come at the expense of protection.

I usually have one or two things I'd change about any given product, but I honestly cannot think of anything for this helmet. I highly recommend the Super DH to anyone who wants extra protection for the most important part of their body.

Go Ahead I dare you to crash it

What's that you say, a convertible helmet that is DH certified! Yep you heard that right. this is my new favorite helmet!

I was a little skeptical about going with a convetable helmet. If I go to the lift's I take a full MX helmet, so I wasn't sure how much I would use the chin bar. Now that I have it it comes with me all the time. I'll strap the chin bar to my pack, belt loop and whatever else I got laying around. For the most part when pedaling up to find that perfect gnar section you don't even really notice it back there. Sure your buddy's are going to give you some crap about it, but who cares. Once you have reached the top where the descent begins and the rowdiness picks up you'll be glad you brought it along. It's quite amazing how much more confident and safer one feels while riding with a full face.

In this particular model it has a inner shell that essentially floats against the outer shell offering up that MIPS technology to help reduce the risk of brain damage when you crash. It also has an adjustable strap, visor, and ratchet system and the foam padding is designed to wick the moisture away from your face so if you are a heavy sweater like myself it will drip off the front of the helmet and not on your glasses or in your eyes. My only grip about this helmet is that if your sunglasses have a really wide bow (100% Speedcraft) they will not fit very well and fog up during the climb. (with or without chinbar installed)

Best option out there!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had the other Bell Super helmets and this one is way better. as far as convertible helmets go... this one is best in my opinion. with out the chin bar its a great looking helmet. Love the magnetic chin strap that they have incorporated.

Great helmet

Your head is safe with this helmet, although it's true the cheek pads are a bit uncomfortable. The helmet does come with 2 sets of cheek pads with different thickness to chose the one that works the best for you.

    Bell is back on top!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet is the next level of innovation in their removable chin bar helmets (3r line) and it is race approved for enduro and downhill if i'm not mistaken. The chin bar comes off nice and easy with 3 little buckles and when the chin bar is removed it looks like a normal mtb helmet and the venting an breathability is awesome on this thing. The colors could be better I think, but I went with the black anyway. It comes with 2 sizes of cheek pads to make sure they don't protrude too much and the dial system that cinches down to your head is easy to operate and comfortable. I rode with the Giro Switchblade last year

    almost awesome

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

This helmet is super nice, I loved the spherical MIPS where the liner is not against your head, and the ventilation seems great.

However, the cheek pads in this helmet are terrible. I love the Bell Full-9 cheek pads that press more on your jaw and cheekbone and less on the middle of your cheeks. The Bell Super DH cheek pads are the opposite, and bluge out in the middle so they push my cheeks into my teeth, which is super uncomfortable. I'm not sure who the chin bar is designed to fit, but it's not me.

    Unanswered Question

What is the weight of the half lid portion of the helmet?
