Item # BEL00F9

Budget minded brain protection.

Mountain biking takes a lot out of us as riders, physically, mentally, and then there's the issue of our pocket books. While we don't want to compromise on the safety of our noggins, we want to watch the budget where we can. Fortunately Bell understands that we don't want to take short cuts or make compromises when it comes to wallet-friendly cranium protection, which is why its designers created the 4Forty MIPS Helmet. Priced just below three-digits, the 4Forty provides the support you want for vigorous trail riding, with a full hardshell exterior to take the brunt of big blows, while MIPS technology reduces rotational forces to protect your brain.

The Bell 4Forty has 15 generous vents to keep you cool on long climbs, and is styled similarly to the Bell Sixer Mips helmet, but skips some of the bells and whistles to better fit into a conservative budget. It does still come equipped with built-in sweat guide, to keep drips out of your eyes, extended rear coverage for protecting the sensitive spots on the back of your head from tree branches and hits, and an adjustable fit with a rubberized, overmolded dial for locking into the perfect fit.

  • Budget friendly noggin protection with MIPS technology
  • Hardshell molding protects from big hits
  • Extended rear coverage shields sensitive area
  • Adjustable visor keeps your eyes nicely shaded
  • Sweat guide keeps salty drops out of your eyes
  • Rubberized dial designed for glove-friendly adjustable
  • Ages 5 and older

I had an old road helmet that I was riding with. Just bought a new MTB this year and decided to upgrade my gear. After some research I knew unneeded the MIPS technology. This helmet is everything you need at the best price point. PROS: Price sweet spot Lightweight Great fit Adjustment wheel makes tightening super easy Has visor and super safe Looks great! CONS: none I was gonna get a Troy Lee, but all the other helmets with MIPS are $150 + Get it!

What Gemmick?

I've used it several times

I bought this helmet because it was pretty cheap to come with MIPS, had room for goggles, and some cool color ways. When I bought it I paid no attention to the sweat guide tab that extends from the brow pad. I tend to sweat a lot, and always expect to be wiping away sweat when I ride. But, after about 30 min of hard climbing, I noticed that all the sweat was falling in front of my face, and not on it. The sweat guide actually works. Now the 4Forty did have some pressure points on the back of my head where the adjuster is which became a little uncomfortable after a while, but overall a great helmet. Also, I'm not saying that a little bit of extended pad is a make or break piece of tech, but, if you sweat a lot, maybe it is.

Agreed, the back cage can get tight on your head, but I just snug the wheel and buckle the strap. Don’t need it super tight.
