Simple & Effective

I have four of these that are currently rotating as my ski-masks. My local resort here in Utah has intelligently made masks mandatory and these loop over the back of the head and tie behind the neck, which works much better with my helmet, goggles, and beard, than the behind-the-ear style of loops. The material is more breathable than some but is thick enough that I am not concerned about using it without a filter in high-output situations. If I was grocery shopping then I would use one of the filters they came with. They have held up with no major signs of wear to about a dozen washings so far.

Functional face mask

OK...let's face it--all face masks are a drag. But in the current environment they are a necessity and often mandated. So ya' gotta have 'em. Most face masks work by attaching around the ears. This winds up giving you a headache after a good bit of time, plus those with hearing aids can't use them (my wife, specifically). This face mask works with an elastic that goes over the head and then a tie behind the neck. Much more comfortable. Our ski mountain's base is at 9200 ft. and goes up to over 12,400. So the removable filter was too much blockage for adequate O2 intake. The face mask by itself is adequate. No face mask seems to work with sunglasses and this one is no exception. With goggles, you seal the top edge of the mask under the bottom edge of the goggle and you're good while you're moving. On the chair (by yourself or with one other on a quad), you can lower the mask to be sure you don't generate fog. Ya' gotta fiddle with this stuff, but that's life in the pandemic age. It works, basically. Definitely a worthwhile and comfortable mask that will deliver what you need.

I didn't like the design when I first bought it over the summer. I prefer using a mask that hooks to the ears when just doing everyday activities. When snowboard season approached, I put this over my helmet, with the top elastic strap and the tied the bottom strap attached to the google strap clip in the back. It not only provides a secure fit, but when I'm done riding, the mask covers my goggles, acting like a scratch guard. I breathe pretty hard during a run so usually have it under my chin while riding, and then just pull it up when I get to the lift line. I carry a "normal" paper mask for when I take my helmet off.

Great Mask!

I love the close and secure fit of this mask. The internal nose bridge makes it easy to adjust to your specific face/nose shape, the filter sleeve is a key safety feature to add in your own filter, or at least have a double layer mask as most ski resort are requiring - this a great fit over a beanie or under a helmet if you chose to take to this to the mountain. Love the cropped goat logo detail on the side as well - I get a lot of compliments on this mask since it is a stand out amongst the others!

I chose the huckleberry OSFM due to the straps. The ear straps on most mask hurt me after some time wearing them. This mask fits well and the straps are not too tight. My one issue is the fabric does tend to cling a bit when breathing but as I use this to run errands or walk the dog it is not an issue.

Have you ever wanted to hike a 15 mile trail in the middle of a pandemic and gotten to the trail head to discover it's really crowded? Did you want to stay safe while hiking? Boy do we have the mask for you! One strap is fixed so it sits nicely around your head while the other ties to keep it in place. No worries about passing by another hiker closely and catching the Vid-19. This will help keep your worries at bay and it won't make you feel like your suffocating.

Purchased several of these, both adult and child versions for me and the kids to ski in. They fit comfortably and securely under a helmet and didnt cause any Google fogging. Skiing all day was not a problem, best mask I have used yet, I wouldnt change a thing other than to remove the big logo.

Most masks slide off my nose whenever I talk. This one stays secure once I figured out how tight I needed the bottom laces. I wear it with both of the filters that it comes with (overkill) and I have no problem breathing while I'm working.

Okay, but some kinks to work out

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I saw these through an online add and was excited about the design. I really like the overall look and design of this mask with the elastic headband and then the tie-on for around the neck. Its makes getting it on/off very easy. The material is also very nice and soft on the inside of the mask. there are some areas where this mask falls short: -The stitching of the elastic band for around your head is on the inside part of the mask, so it rubs on my cheeks consistently. I get little sores in these locations. It would be much better if the elastic was stitched to the outer mask rather than what's against your face. -I also think the elastic may be a bit too small/tight and this exacerbates the rubbing issue on my cheeks. I ordered the "One Size Fits Most" and the mask portion fits well, but the elastic is just a bit too tight. -Despite the inner material being soft and pliable, the seam running down the middle of the mask runs right over my chin. This seam also rubs constantly for me and is irritating. If at all possible, it would be much better to have the inner fabric be all a single piece, or attempt to move that seam somehow. For short stints, this mask works well, but I have a job where I need to wear a mask all day and this just is not the one to complete that job.

Sounds Ike a nice thick beard would alleviate most of those issues😉

What exactly is different between the one size and the large? Is it just the length of the elastic and ties, or is is the size of the actual mask fabric in the front, too? Thanks!

Hey hey Kyle, great question. The Large will have larger face fabric but likely the same length ties, which are pretty long to start with. For reference all images are of the One Size on a model with average size face.

Best mask I've found

I wear glasses, and nearly every other mask causes them to fog. This mask has a wide nose bridge that does a good job of sealing and not fogging. I also like the elastic top head strap and the lower ties - I can quickly pull it up or drop it down without digging it out of a pocket or wondering where I put it.

Functionally Poor... Looks Good Though

Familiarity:

Mask design incorporates excess interior mask material. Said material is flimsy/baggy & does not hold its form during use. Result: the mask material gets drawn into your nostrils when breathing. Material also gets drawn into your mouth if you attempt using that pathway to get the fabric out of your nostrils. If you're on the couch with a 50 bpm heart rate, this likely won't be a problem. Pick a different mask for any other activity though. Surprised Backcountry didn't design this to be more useful for non-couch surfing activities. I purchased two of these masks... the other used by my gf. She had the same issue & gave up on it too. The mask does look good though. 1 star retained for that, -4 stars for function.

I find that using the filters that it comes with help maintain the shape and also prevents it from being pulled into my mouth/Nose. I wear one at work for 9 hours a day without any issues since I've been using the filters. Maybe my face is just the perfect shape for the design.

I ordered 2 of these mask. Love the backcountry design! Love the soft material. They are so comfortable to wear. Love the way it fits. Love how it has filters to put in the mask. These mask will come in handy when I’m working and when I go to business’s that require a mask. The best part is how it has straps to go behind your head instead of your ears. So much better! No more sore ears! I highly recommend!

I got this mask from Backcountry hoping that since it was made by an outdoor company, that they would have made it in a way that was better than average for being active. Unfortunately, it is not. The picture shows a single loop at the bottom to go around the back of your neck, but mine has non-stretchy ties instead that I do not like at all. I have numerous masks with the same PM 2.5 filters, but this is the only mask in which the filter has so much room to move & slide around that it bunches up into a wad and does not stay flat. I wore it while running yesterday & every time I pulled it up over my nose & mouth, the inner fabric liner got inhaled straight into my face instead of it staying away from my airway openings (nostrils & mouth). So all in all, I am extremely disappointed in this mask. In my opinion, it is awful for active endeavors and I will only be wearing it when the other one I have with head loops is in the wash.

Is the fabric slightly stiff? I'm looking for a mask where I won't suck in fabric when I'm huffing and puffing on the trail.

Hey, this is a soft fabric mask, light and airy. However, it will move with your breath.

It doesn't fray or anything like that if that's what your asking, but I can say that you wont inhale fabric.

Does Backcountry sell replacement filters? How often should the filters be replaced?

Hey Hamid, We do not currently sell replacement filters. The filters are good up to 3 days depending on the frequency of use. Some folks have started making replacement filters out of coffee filters as well!

This has become my go-to mask for wearing long periods of time, with the design minimizing stress points and not even hurting my ears. The adjustable nose-pad feature is a very nice addition, with the ability to mold the mask so my glasses do not fog up. Great mask with tons of design features.
