T.rallyShorts_s7 Shorts

When Assos triumphantly rolled out its new, mountain-minded T.rallyShorts_s7 Shorts, we were admittedly surprised — not that the Swiss company was leaving the black ribbon for the dusty trail, but that we never found it odd that a company based in such mountainous terrain hadn't done so before. Whatever the case, the Assos' peculiar naming convention is describing knobby tire kit now, and three key elements set the T.rallyShorts apart from the company's legendary road kit: padding, a revised chamois, and a new main body fabric.

The padding is the most immediately obvious difference, and it's also the feature that most recommends the T.rallyShorts for bumpy riding. The padding centers on the greater trochanter, which marks the top of the femur and the hip joint. The pads comprise 8mm of viscoelastic polyurethane, and they're shaped and positioned to protect against the usual impacts of hard trail riding without compromising pedaling efficiency or mobility. Their low weight and flexibility is further complemented by body perforations, which reduce the suffocating effect of solid pads. They're also removable for days when your XC aspirations aren't as dangerous or you're just out spinning on the road.

The chamois is similar to the amethyst inserts found throughout Assos' road line, but in a grey color. At its heart is an mountain-specific geography of memoryFoam material first introduced in the venerable _s2 FI.13. This material exhibits remarkable return properties, so it quickly returns to its original position after deformation, essentially filling the gaps that your pedal stroke produces while your weight shifts throughout the pedaling motion.

The final mountain-specific innovation included here is the Kompressorfabric, whose compound name alludes to the material's combined powers of compression, aerodynamic properties, and durability. While the former two properties feature in Assos' road line, durability is almost as important for off-road shorts, so the material is made to handle the rough-and-tumble world of pervasive trail grime, grasping branches, and unyielding granite that most road rides never encounter.

The T.rallyShorts are built on Assos' s7 platform, which entails a host of bulk-reducing, anatomical features, but the goldenGate design warrants a specific call-out. GoldenGate involves attaching the chamois at the front and rear, leaving the sides free to float so the chamois moves with your body instead of against it. This effectively relocates friction from the skin/chamois interface to the chamois/shorts, all but eliminating friction. It also facilitates the chamois' "gap filling" action, which by helping to keep contact constant to avoid chafing.

The leg bands continue this theme of fitting your body instead of forcing your body to fit the shorts. The legs terminate in low-volume superFlat grip bands to keep the cuffs securely in place, and the waistband uses gentle compression and a wide footprint to ensure coverage without adding pressure and restriction to your stomach. The lay-flat bib straps keep everything in place and maintain the classic Assos fit, which will feel a bit awkward on two feet, but clicks into place when you mount-up on the trail.

  • Assos bibs taking its road technology to the trails
  • Removable impactPads provide hip protection
  • S7 mountain bike specific insert increases singletrack comfort
  • KompressorFabric provides support and compression for less fatigue
  • RegularFit offers freedom of movement without excess fabric
  • Assos intends to make its mark offroad just as it has on the pavement

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure around the widest part of your chest.
Bend to the side and measure around the place where your waist bends, keeping the tape a bit loose.

    ❓$300.00 ❓

    I've used it several times
    True to size

I know I thought the same. Please have me committed for throwing down 3 large for MTB shorts. 2 words: worth it. I have been on 2 wheels for 30 years and have the scars to prove it. These are exactly as described: superb XC shorts. The fit, the material, the padding are all just dialed in, the best. I wear baggies & road shorts depending on the course. I hate standing for a hill or technical move & having the baggies crotch catch the front of my saddle. I must admit and I know it’s not “cool” but I don’t ride super baggie. If you are a poser, enduro, downhill rider or going to biff hard skip it. I have the assos padded liners and they are my go to for XC trails under light baggies for summer and tights for winter. I have no cons for these except the nearly gaggable price. I got these like my road shorts a bit large.

These bibs are great. Super comfortable for those long mtb rides. There is some added durability so they don't get torn up on the trail. They are the way to go for those everyday xc rides.

I can't give it 5 stars because they do come with the penthouse. For $300 they should but these are no question the 2nd best pair of bibs I own. 1st being the T.CAMPIONISSIMO_S7.

Roadies can ride dirt in style too. Assos OffRoad Rally collection is a must for that XC racer that doesn't want to wear their Cento bibs on the dirt or their SS.Campionissimo Jersey and risk wear and tear. The T.RALLYSHORTS is built with Kompressorfabric, which is more durable than their pristine road material. These are light, flexible, and made to take on the abuse the trails deliver. When the rider needs more protection they can use the impactPads (included), which are designed for protection, but doesn't sacrifice comfort or inhibit performance. There has been comments on the legs grippers, they are slightly larger than Assos road line, but they do fall in place after you start pedaling. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions on these or any other Assos products. The leg grippers are WAY too big. I have many pairs of Assos shorts in medium so I don't think this is a sizing problem. I'm 5'7. Had to return them.

Hey Jeffrey, If, by any chance, you do want to try a small as a replacement, please let me know and I'd be happy to get you set up with a replacement order. -Kody

Had the same issue. Have worn Assos for years and these have a very weird fit. Returning them today.

    Really good Bibs

These are really good bibs. The leg grippers are weird but once you get in the riding position that weridness is gone. I did have slight issue with bunching near the front on my last ride with them. Not sure why but I will report back if it happens on my 3rd with them this weekend.

    Best mountain bib!

I don't normally give apparel items 5 stars... There's usually something that I can find that makes me feel it wasn't perfect. However, I don't have anything negative to say about this bib short. I love Assos gear, so I had high expectations for this bib and they were met! They are the most comfortable mountain bib I've worn. These are great to be worn as just the bib, but I do also wear the H.Rally cargo shorts by Assos on top when I'm with my buddies wearing baggies. If there was one pair of mountain-specific bibs that I could recommend, it'd be the T.Rally!

Did you have a problem with the leg grippers? JCP

Hey Jeffrey, Personally, I don't have any issues with the leg grippers, they seem to have a tight enough fit without feeling constricting. -Kody

    was dubious; now stoked.

I've put it through the wringer

When my local shop (Velo Pasadena) told me about Assos about to venture into MTB clothing, I was suspicious. I've owned a ton of Assos stuff over the years. ALL FOR ROAD. I've loved it, so I guess I can't be surprised that the MTB stuff was bomb. Yet, I was surprised! And it is the BOMB. I'm just riding cross-country, so I don't use the pads, but the fit is great. It's tight. The fabric seems more durable than the Campionissimo road bibs (which also rock). Anyway, I recommend these bibs for anyone looking to race the likes of Leadville. Adios.
