How the Swiss ride to battle.

The white cross and red field of Switzerland's unusually-shaped flag was originally inspired by strips of white cloth crossed perpendicularly on the clothing of 14th-century soldiers as a field mark for identification. It was later adopted on the battle standards of various Swiss Cantons. In the 21st century, Spartacus still rides to battle at the Worlds girt with the iconic cross of the Assos SS.suissefedjersey_evo7.

Though the civilian version omits the official jersey's green panels and sponsor branding, it's still built from the same Assos Type 151 fabric. This innovative material was designed with body temperature regulation in mind, as its composition works to transfer moisture at varying rates. When your body is hot, and your perspiration levels are high, the material reacts by accelerating moisture transfer from your skin to the fabric's quick-drying surface. When your body cools down, evaporation slows, using body moisture as a means of retaining warmth. For additional body temperature control and increased moisture wicking, the Swiss jersey's underarm panels have been constructed with Assos' highly elastic, lightweight mesh. The placement of this material provides you with both a free range of motion and enhanced breathability.

The jersey also fits the same as the jerseys worn by Switzerland's Worlds contingency, so it's tight and sleek. There's no compromising extra material to flap about in the wind, and it's built to accommodate the various postures and movements you make in the saddle. It's also got the small details that you'd expect from Assos. In addition to the three lower back panel pockets, a zippered "safety pocket" was sewn onto the right rear pocket, allowing you to stash your keys and cash, as well as to route your headphone wires through the inside of the jersey. The jersey is finished with a covered, full-front zipper and an elastic/silicone hem at the rear.

Runs Small; Average Quality

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

My chest is 39.5 inches so I ordered the Medium which runs to 39.4 instead of the Large which is 40.2. It's a bit too tight, and I don't have broad shoulders or a belly. This is my first Assos product and I am disappointed with the average quality. It's nothing special. I expected more from such a vaunted, expensive brand. Luckily, I caught a good sale and got a promo. No way it's worth full retail.

I'll review again when I wear it on a ride. This is a summer jersey and it still feels like the dead of winter in Boston, so it's going to be a while.

The Best

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Assos makes the best cycling gear, no question. Having lost a lot of weight this year, about ten pounds, I found that my old Swiss Federtion Jersey was too large. I bought this one in small, and it is perfect both is size and comfort. It is built for cycling, not walking around. When ypu get on a bike it feels exactly as you want a jersey to feel. Best, of course, is that it is beautiful, the prettiest jersey ever.

Okay, I concede...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XS

Assos still makes great jerseys. I have nothing bad to say about this one. It fits me absolutely perfectly, the graphics are beautiful, and it has held up to quite a few washings. Good way to show some Swiss pride.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: TIR

I got this as a gift, and it's a perfect fit! He's 6'4, 205 lbs. The TIR fits well, and he's stoked. Not easy to fit his frame, so I'm happy I found this for him.

The quality is great, which is no surprise.
