The bib-free Assos H.laalalaiShorts_s7 Lady Shorts showcase Assos' goldenGate construction method, a welcome addition to the Swiss manufacturer's women's line since it may be our favorite recent advancement in cycling shorts technology. GoldenGate involves attaching the chamois at the front and rear, leaving the sides free to float so the chamois moves with your body instead of against it. This effectively relocates friction from the skin/chamois interface to the chamois/shorts, all but eliminating skin irritation in that most sensitive of areas. We're starting to see this feature crop up in other manufacturers' lines but—true to the precedent of history—Assos did it first and continues to do it better.

The rest of the shorts are what you would expect from the self-styled "shorts company," with a compressive, durable fabric arranged anatomically. Your body fits into the shorts, rather than the shorts deforming to fit your body. That keeps all the disparate elements of the shorts—from the forgiving inserts at the leg openings to the gently compressive waistband—in the places where they belong while still affording unfettered movement in the saddle.

The lack of bibs doesn't just address the difficulty of reconciling bib straps with a woman's anatomy. It also lets the H.laalalaiShorts transcend the barriers of warm-weather imposed on other shorts. They're useful as a base layer when temperatures and precipitation start falling, because you can wear them beneath tights without adding undue bulk or interfering with your torso layering strategy. When the weather heads south, you won't be stuck with a terry-cloth winter chamois. Considering that Assos is known as "the shorts company" for a reason, that's a welcome revelation.

In addition to the goldenGate tech mentioned above, the H.laalalaiShorts bring to women's-specific kit the same _s7 chamois technology found throughout Assos' men's line. At the insert's heart is an 8mm-thick memoryFoam material with remarkable return properties, so it quickly resumes its original position and shape after deformation. This essentially fills the gaps between body and chamois created by your pedal stroke while your weight shifts throughout the cycling motions. As you can imagine, the free-floating, goldenGate design also facilitates this gap-free fit, which keeps contact constant to avoid chafing.

Finally, the superAir and waffle construction of the insert's first two layers warrant special attention, as they increase breathability and shed weight through negative space. They also effectively increase the material's surface area, transporting moisture away from your skin to accelerate drying for hours of comfort that go beyond what the insert's low weight would suggest.

Unbearable to wear!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Size Bought: Medium

I had the previous version of Assos women's shorts (FI.LADY_S5, with the teal pad) and absolutely loved them. I was going to get a second pair, but saw there was a new version out, so I ordered these instead. I regret this decision terribly because these new shorts are unwearable. When you're on a hill, the pad really moves around, pulling away from your crotch every time you push down on the pedal, because it's not attached on the sides, only in front and back. You can feel an intermittent breeze on your privates, which is really uncomfortable and distracting. Also, these shorts give me a sore spot, in the front, right on a very sensitive area. I had a painful sore after a 36 mile ride the last time I wore them. I've had these shorts for a year now, and have decided that I've tried everything (tons of chamois cream, even taping a cotton ball with first aid tape to protect the sensitive spot from rubbing!) Shorts this expensive should be comfortable and not require a hack to make them comfortable! I'm much past the return date, so sadly, I basically wasted $160. So incredibly disappointing!!!

Disappointing if you liked previous ones

Used to love Assos shorts for 100+ mile rides. Rode 10 thousand + miles in that brand of shorts. These do not measure up and were such a disappointment that I don't even want to wear for 1/2 hour. Sizing also runs differently. Save your money and buy another brand.

I have the same experience! I loved the previous version FI.LADY_S5 with the teal insert pad. I absolutely hate these! Can't ever wear them again.

weird fit

I have been eyeing Assos and got this pair as a birthday gift from my husband. The waistband is a stretchier fabric with a v in the front. On my body it was looser and had a lot of movement (didn't feel secure). I didn't ride in these just tried on - many times - hoping a different day would like them. sadly they are going back. These seem to run a bit small compared to Pearl Izumi Elite and Pro series - I sized up. I have a built that is more straight than curvy .. I hope this is helpful. I spent hours doing research online to find a few pairs.

Game changer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These Assos shorts really are a game changer. I didn't think a pair of shorts could minimize pressure and pain this much. I used to feel pain down under anywhere between 20-35 miles and was in excruciating pain on rides above 45 miles. These Assos shorts (and hoo ha ride glide) have me riding comfortably on 70-90 mile rides. That kind of mileage is bound to be a little uncomfortable because let's face it, being in the saddle all day hurts. But I'm in a lot less discomfort thanks to Assos. Expensive but so WORTH IT.

Best chamois!

I have the Women's Asoss H Lalalala... BIBS and I wanted to get the shorts as well. I really like the bibs more but I turn to these when I need to save seconds at the rest breaks when biking with the guys! They have the same super soft lavender chamois with golden gate technology and firm cushioning. This chamois is also noticeably very bacterial resistant and drying. In hot, humid, sweat filled summer rides in south Florida it does not get soggy and heavy like some other brands. For any serious ride, I only wear my Assos short and bibs. The other brands stay in the drawer and only come out when I'm not riding for performance of any kind. They hold up great and look like new after 1000+ of miles. The compression fit helps me feel great! I wish I found these sooner!

Comfortable hight tech fabric & chamois

  • Fit: Runs small

I am an avid cyclist and like shorts that have a chamois that holds up on long rides. This chamois fits the bill, the short fabric is top notch, excellent construction & the overall design is nice, but in my opinion not great ( the raised logo on the back hip needs to go). If you tend to be on the long waisted side these shorts may not be for you, they are cut lower than usual in the front.

Great shorts, strange customer service!

I bought these shorts for touring in New Zealand. Have not worn them yet but the I already have the bib shorts and knickers and love the comfort and the subtle details. What stopped me in my tracks was a call from “Grant” at customer service. He seemed to be doing some follow up/ PR and asked me about my purchase. I mentioned that the price was no bargain, same as local dealers, and he said no problem, he could take $45 off. Great I said, but shorts arrived, lovely in little box, with tax and shipping, $175! When I questioned Grant he suggested I physically return and exchange the shorts! That seems ridiculous, surely a virtual return and exchange would have been possible? I’d already sold my husband on CC and he also got shorts but since the Grant experience we have not looked at the site.

I new to road biking. Have ridden mountain bikes for 30+ years (although put more of a road bike tire on it as the "skinny" always freaked me out). I am still getting used to how the bikes handle differently. When I started riding the best piece of advice was to not "pinch pennies" on the shorts. Out of the store I purchased some Specialized that were in the $75 range. They were okay. After speaking with a customer rep here about my concerns regarding having shorts with enough support in the seat area, he suggested these. I have a permanently fractured, displaced pelvis and a bone graft to fuse the pubic symphysis together to keep the pelvic bones more stable. The "sits" bones, or bones of the right side (ischial tuberosity) are displaced/fractured into about 4 pieces and there is nothing the surgeons could really do as the hardware has already broken twice due to movement of the pelvic bones (and I don't want to deal with a 3rd recovery of months in a hospital bed). In comparison with the Specialized shorts, which are nice, these absolutely set the bar at a whole new level. I actually have 2 other pairs of different brands (one being a bib that zips around the middle for easy restroom use) but these and the Chamois Butt'r cream have been more than sufficient in keeping me pain free. So any shorts that allow me to ride for about 25 miles before I get a bit achy are winners in my book! I am 5'3," 145 (hoping the cycling and weight training can help me lose those last 20 lbs) and the large fit beautifully. And as the glutes get stronger and that area becomes less sensitive to the pressure I can enjoy longer rides!

Unanswered Question

What is the inseam of the Assos H.laalalaiShorts_s7 Lady Shorts? I also would like to know the inseam for the knickers. I asked in a chat and someone was going to get back to me, but never did. Thanks.

Strong First Impressions

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

This is my first Assos product and I wore it road cycling for approximately 5 hours on flat paved trail. The chamois was surprisingly comfortable without the bulk I have experienced with Cappo or Garneau. The chamois outline also seems shaped different with area extending to the sitz bones. The thigh material and waistband were equally comfortable.
The first time trying them on, the cord-like seam between waistband and groin area seemed tight and inflexible. However, the second time I put them on there was no problem and no "cutting" discomfort from that seam.
Occasionally standing up and pedaling out of the saddle, I felt air flow through the crotch.
My first impressions were strong and after a few more rides, I will be better able to determine whether these will be my go-to shorts.

Worth it, so so worth it.

I absolutely love my Assos H.Laalalai Shorts. I've run my Assos S5 shorts into the ground (and still wear them), but these are completely amazing and so damn comfortable.
I'm a mountain biker, and used to be a person who'd run with the stock chamois that came as a liner with whatever shorts I was snagging, but after riding in Assos I can't go back. These make it so much better to bang out the big mile rides, and hit the trail day after day. They are lightweight enough that I can wear them under my baggies on the trail comfortably, and not feel like I'm overheating or just creating a sweat pool inside them, which nobody wants. At the same time, they're solid enough that I wear them on their own when hitting some XC miles and feel like rocking the lycra.
There are many areas where you can save a few bucks on your riding gear, but when it comes to what keeps your sit bones happy, it's worth spoiling yourself and spending the extra couple of bucks.
10/10, would recommend to anyone who is thinking about trying an upgrade from their basic chamois.

I'm 5'5", 115 lbs, 25" waist and 35" hips. This is my first Assos purchase. The small fits and is plenty snug. Another couple of pounds and the medium would have been better. Compressive fabric, great fit, chamois is the best ever. I typically wear an Free Aero Castelli, which I also love, but the Assos wins.

almost great

i am tall and thin. i got size S, and hoped they'd fit snugly and stay down. the chamois is comfortable enough, but the legs do ride up, which bugs me. i'd even rather they'd be longer; but the men's were way too loose in the legs. so probably not my go to shorts, but comfortable.

I'm 5'8 138lbs
I wear med in PI brand
torn between a med or a large. although there is only 2cm difference in the two sizes, can some one help me please?

I wear a size small in the S5's (can't find another size small anywhere) - got a size small in the H.laalalaiShorts_s7 Lady and they are too small. I am returning them and willget a size medium. I'm 5' 8" and weigh 132.

I am 5'4" and 145 lbs and I wear a large and they fit me really well. So, you probably should go with a medium.

Miles and miles of comfort

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Assos has made THE perfect short! The overall fit is snug but forgiving, and the fabric is a dream to wear; soft, supportive and cool in hot temperatures. I'm 5'6, 120 lbs, have a smaller waist but fairly muscular legs. Typically, shorts are either boxy or too tight in the legs. The small in this short was perfect, even for someone with a longer torso- they did not pull downward while riding.

Lastly, the new Golden Gate chamois is THE BEST I've ever worn! So comfortable and not bulky and diaper-like. The real test for me was a climbing century in warmer conditions, and I already had a saddle sore from my old shorts- these shorts saved me and I felt I could've done 100 miles more!

Best shorts ever

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Assos finally hit it. I have always thought they had the chamois too thick and that it just missed. With this short, they seem to have finally found the magic mix. The chamois is perfect (granted it is still thick, but it works); the shorts have a nice inseam and are generally comfortable. You can wish that there was an extra inch in the front so that they gave a bit more coverage, but the low ride nature in front is nowhere near the problem it was in the winter tights.

BEST CYCLING SHORTS EVER!!!!!! I have been a long-time fan of Assos, having several pair of S5's. But after having just finished a week-long Alps cycling trip (6 days/600k) during which I exclusively wore these shorts (yes, I washed them in the sink every night!), I am a new fan of these shorts in particular! I love the floating pad! No saddle sores or soreness at all!!! They are great and worth every dime. The purple (magenta?) pad is less bulky than the original Assos blue pad, which I never found too big of a deal anyway, but I do love the new floating design because there is really minimal to no chafing at all! Amazing shorts!
