Assos Equipe RS S9 Bib Short

Never one to rest on its laurels, Assos put in six years of research and development, creating the Equipe RS Bib Shorts S9, a very worthy successor to its popular S7 shorts. Using its most advanced race insert to date, and a host of new features throughout, the S9 promises to be a comfortable pair of bibs that will keep you feeling great on your longest, most difficult rides. This all-new design was honed and tested not only by its in-house riders, but the BMC World Tour team also had a heavy influence in its design.

Perhaps the most scrutinized component of any cycling shorts is the chamois and Assos paid careful attention when designing this race-specific insert constructed of 3D Basalt. First up, it's now grey instead of the previous amethyst. One big goal was reducing its bulk by shedding excess volume and grams over the previous S7 chamois. It now feels much thinner between the fingers versus the S7 insert, yet it somehow improves comfort and remains so even after many hours in the saddle. The padding consists of superAir microShock foam helping to absorb road vibrations thanks to its ultralight open cell foam. Up front, kraterCooler ventilation holes help to increase airflow and offer much-needed cooling while the 3D Waffle three-layer composition further aids in breathability. The middle section of the insert receives Assos' much-lauded GoldenGate technology which essentially eliminates stitching the chamois to the short allowing it to more easily move with you for more comfortable pedaling. Final chamois details include its Horizontal Stabilizer that locks the insert to the outer textile with a reinforced central stitch. Bottom line, the S7 insert was already one of our favorites and these new updates take the S9 over the top.

Up top, the shorts see a total redesign there as well and now feature a detail that Assos is calling A-Lock Engineering. It’s a totally new way of attaching the Carbon Xbib straps to the shorts using advanced textiles and bracing technologies that aim to better stabilize and secure the insert as you pedal. The straps themselves are a single section of elastic material which is folded over on itself and forms a supportive A-frame with its tuned vertical elasticity. Furthermore, the straps crisscross at the back and anchor in place while in the front they're placed in a wide stance to sit comfortably and help minimize irritation.

The construction of the lowers consists of just two panels, one for the lower back and one for the legs. It connects using a butterfly panel that wraps the legs and meets at the rear ergoBox, a square pattern construction that frames the insert at the back, boxing it in for added stability. This yields a consistent and uniform hold while dropping the overall weight. Furthermore, it allows for 30% fewer seams creating a very lightweight short that simply fits better.

Lastly, there are two versions of the S9, the more affordable RS we have here, placing an emphasis on total comfort and support and uses its rollBar technology of bib strap bracing to secure the insert, ensuring it stays in place in or out of the saddle, and the RSR for the more weight conscious that foregoes the rollBar to keep weight to a minimum. Additionally, the RS uses Assos' Type.441 material offering a moderately compressive warp knit for support, second-skin fit, and ultimate durability, where the RSR uses its superlight woven with high elasticity Type.701kompressor for higher compression, better aerodynamics, and a snug fit.

I have been wearing Assos brand shorts for over 20 years and have always been impressed by their quality, durability and most importantly their comfort. These shorts are NOT COMFORTABLE at all, in fact I have stopped wearing them because they chafe me in places that they are supposed to protect! I would not recommend this style of short for anyone looking for comfort while in the saddle.

By Far - the Best

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These bibs are by Far the most comfortable bib shorts that I have ever worn on the bike. I try to ride 100 miles per week or so. Just did my first 36 mile solo with these and they felt almost like nothing was there. No issues at all - so comfortable. A+ Assos!

This has to be one of the most comfortable bib I've ever put on. Being 6'3 169#, most don't fit well I cashed in on XLG on sale and they fit like a dream. The compact chamois is great as well -- those purple ones always feel like wearing a diaper-- I miss the green chamois in all my older bibs Living in AZ where the weather is >u one can appreciate a lighter weight fabric! Good luck on your purchase-- tons of choices and limited resources make it hard to find the perfect gear&.

Not as good as the previous

Disappointing. The previous generation was much more comfortable. In this generation, the main fabric seems thinner and ends up bunching up in the front to give a frontal wedgie. The pad also has too much material. The fabric that goes up over the belly, while losing the seam (improvement) is overall a downgrade because it's too tight. Hopefully they just revert to the Equipe evo. The only upgrade on this pair from the Evo is the bib straps, which are better than the last. However, this small upgrade is overshadowed by the other problems. The medium is the only viable size for me, despite being 5'8" and 140. Small is just too tight and uncomfortable. Medium is maybe slightly big (whereas, in the equipe evo, M was perfect), but there's just no way I could get down to an S.

Fabric ripped after 2 years

Over the last decade, I've purchased about 10 pairs of Assos bibs...so it gives me no pleasure to report that the fabric on this R9 ripped at the chamois seam after 2 years. The fabric on this bib always felt thinner & less durable than my others -- so I wasn't surprised when I noticed a rip/hole in it. I have another R9 that's holding up OK at the 1 year mark. But an Assos bib that rips after 2 years? That's unacceptable for a brand noted for its high quality gear.

Gotta give props when they're due. The packaging and presentation of Assos bibs, the unboxing experience is truly delightful. With that said, I like the S5s and S7s a lot better. It seems like Assos is going in the wrong direction. So I am not sure if I am saying this right but the chamois has like a gradient density with it being thicker and firmer in the back and it gets pretty thin and bunchy towards the front. I ride a lot of miles and I also move around on the saddle a lot. The padding is about right when I'm on my sit bones on the back of the saddle but when I am hammering from the nose of the saddle the chamois is very thin and not very helpful. Before anyone tells me I should be wearing a small, I have big thighs and a big backyard. In fact, the compression is pretty good and probably my favorite thing about these shorts. Like another reviewer noted, it's cut a little low in the front. Annoying but not a deal breaker. Overall, they're ok, but not great. Obvy a chamois/bib preference is going to be very unique to the rider. I won't buy another product with this chamois. Tbh, I like my Giordana apparel a lot better and I think I'm going to quit Assos.

Wore them on two rides. The discomfort of tightness around my thin thighs forced me to unload them on eBay. I prefer S7s.

Super lightweight material feels good and stretches well. Back straps are more comfortable than the mesh of the S7. These in XS were closer to fit of the S5 in S which to me is still the gold standard. I have the S7 in S and the fit is too loose in the chamois especially with the floating center padding.

Assos Equipe Bib Shorts

Super lightweight thin material feels great for summer riding. I?m 6?2? and 180 and the large fits me well. Would say it?s very slightly small for a large but stretchy enough to not make a difference.
