Item # AAS002N

The winter cyclist's vanguard.

In the war on winter, your hands are the far-flung outpost in the frozen north: under-manned, under-supplied, and under perpetual siege by cold, wet, and wind. Send in the cavalry to relieve your beleaguered digits with the Assos bonkaGlove_evo7.

To play that cavalry metaphor out a bit more, the fact that this is Assos means that the bonkaGlove_evo7 is to typical winter gloves as the M3 Bradley is to Napoleonic Hussars. The shell is airBlock material with a DWR treatment, so it repels wind and water like the Bradley repels small arms fire so the multi-density insulation can do its job.

The stretchy neoprene cuff performs an admirable rear guard action to keep the enemy from harassing your supply lines — er — wrists between glove and jacket cuff. The palm is abrasion-resistant and incorporates grippy detailing to provide constant and accurate field intelligence regarding the lay of your handlebars.

The Assos bonkaGlove_evo7 is available in six sizes ranging from X-Small to XLG in the color Black Volkanga.

Not warm.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

If you want your hands to be warm don't buy these. I'd say these are good down to like 40. Down to 21 degrees as rated, absolutely no way.

No place to wipe snot that's comfortable to the nose. Inadequate material dedicated to the place where your hand wraps around the hood.

Otherwise nice, well made and good fit although I think the gripper material on the palms is a bit overkill, causes the gloves to move around on the hands a bit when it sticks to the bar tape. I do like the fact there's virtually no hand padding.

Hand padding on gloves. Why would you ever if you want a good feel of your bike.

Don't live up to description

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These gloves aren't bad; I like the dexterity allowed, and the fit. And with the shell gloves, they make a pretty good combo (still not quite as good as the description). Together, they'll get you down to about freezing, wet or dry; maybe a few degrees below, if it's dry.

By themselves? They aren't wind- or cold-resistant enough.

And 21F? I wouldn't try anywhere close to that (I have heavy mittens for those temperatures). Not even with liners underneath.

The Assos box these gloves come in reads -6° to 8°C and 21° to 46°F. The gloves read 0° to 8°C and 32° to 46°F. My fingers were cold at 35° to 37°F. I do not mind paying for Assos if it stands up to their reputation but at $148 these gloves are NOT worth it. I have a pair of Assos earlyWinterGlove_S7 XLG and they fit while these gloves run small in the same XLG size. This was a brand new model of winter glove 12/2014 replacing the fuguGloves_S7.

I would suggest you look at Giordana, Castelli or GORE gloves for the same quality and half the price.
