Bonka Evo Bib Tight
Switzerland is known for its chocolate, alpine villages, and, if you're a roadie like us, its elite level cycling clothing brand, Assos. And with the high altitudes, snow flurries, and chilly winter temperatures, it should come as no surprise that Assos has a penchant for tackling winter cycling gear that can hold up to the harshest riding conditions that cross the Alps. For years we've been graced with the LL.BonkaTights from Assos, which did a great job of answering our frosty winter demands, but this year Assos is ready to launch into the frost with the new Bonka Evo Bib Tights that feature evolved fabrics for ultimate protection from the cold, while maintaining the signature fit, sharp aesthetic, and supportive compression we've seen in years past.
The new Bonka Evo Bibs are built from Assos' arsenal of winter-proven textiles. Against the skin they feature RX Heavy — a brushed, warp-knit fabric that's developed to wick moisture, insulate, and remain fully flexible for comfortable movement in the saddle. On top of the RX Heavy, Assos employs a two-layer windproof Stratagon Ultra softshell at the knees, thighs, and hips to ward off of the elements, slicing the wind, shedding rain, and keeping you dry with exceptional breathability properties, aiming to keep the front half of your body fully protected as it faces the harsh weather ahead. And while keeping your front half as shielded as possible is a priority, the back zone is best optimized for breathability, as it doesn't have to face the elements head-on. For this very reason, Assos utilizes RX Light fabric to the back of the legs. RX Light offers superior flexibility to its heavier partner, making it ideal for wrapping your gluts and hamstrings that flex and move continuously while you pedal.
To finish off the technology laden fabrics, Assos uses blasenSchutz, German for wind protection, to the abdomen and crotch for added warmth and protection at the core, and waterBarrier panels at the bottom of the leg for added insurance against storms, and a tight seal against your booties.
But if we know Assos well, and we certainly have a deep familiarity with the product, we'd also know that fabrics aren't everything with the brand. Fit matters, too. The attention to fit-related details is evident with features like the articulation down the back of the leg. Assos combines strategically tapered panels of material for a fit through the back of the knee that is every bit as bunch-free as riding with bare knees. Even the reflective strips at the back of the legs are only attached at the ends, as sewing the entire length to the tights would compromise fit and stretch of the fabric.
The Bonka Evo bib tights are finished off with the Cento Evo chamois. The new sleek black insert uses 10mm of plush memory foam and the kukuPenthouse for comfort and support on every ride. kukuPenthouse is a soft, brushed microfiber layer at the front part of the insert that supports male anatomy, and eliminates pressure while improving ventilation. Its patented 3D waffle design uses three-layer perforated foam that increases breathability while dropping excessive grams to keep things feeling light. Finally, the returning goldenGate technology is always welcome to see, and features interrupted stitched along the insert's side panels, allowing for three-dimensional freedom of movement in a sensitive, high-rotational area.
