There was a time when titanium ruled the roost in professional cycling. It was light, resilient, and rode very well. Even today, it’s the material of choice of custom frame builders as its strength-to-weight ratio surpasses steel and aluminum while offering a comfortable ride and the ability to build custom geometry. Moreover, titanium doesn't rust and will last a lifetime, things that ferrous and alloy frames can't boast. So why is carbon fiber the material de jour these days? Good question. For one, in pure stiffness to weight terms, carbon is still king. Otherwise, it boils down to economies of scale. Building with titanium takes a true craftsman, a super-clean work area, and it's labor-intensive. Those discerning cyclist that appreciate the look, ride, and longevity of ti will certainly appreciate the Eros Disc Road Frameset from Alchemy that pairs old-world craftsmanship with disc brakes and electronic shifting compatibility, melding the frame material of our dreams with modern niceties.
Titanium recalls the halcyon days of cycling's past which is perhaps why discerning cyclist still flock to the material, but its ENVE carbon fork and tapered headtube are decidedly modern touches. Stiffening up the front end is the name of the game here, helping preserve a gap on fast, sweeping descents and while hammering out of the saddle on a climb in order to get that gap. The Eros is Alchemy's first frame, and even though it now fabricates its own carbon wonder bikes, Alchemy stands by the Ti Eros as "a sleek work of art" that will "outperform any bike made from any material." The art part is obvious, look at those tidy welds, and the Eros is also surprisingly sharp under hard efforts.
The frame's dimensions also speak to racing rather than café shop cruising. Its reach and drop are typical of a World Tour GC machine, and Alchemy blends that race-minded eagerness to good use as a showcase for titanium's eager, springy responsiveness. The combination of geometry and material means the Eros won't hold you back on the group rides and is as capable of doing battle in crits with turns tight enough to blister a tire and where touching a pedal down isn't uncommon.
That's not to say the Eros isn't only a hard-as-nails race slayer. It's got some elegant design features that improve aesthetics such as the beautifully polished graphics, gorgeous dropouts, and internal routing. These small details not only give you a unique looking ride, but it also showcases the dedication and attention to detail Alchemy instills in every frame and it'll inspire you to want to ride it as often as you can and take the long way back home.
Final touches worth a mention are the S-curve seat and chainstays, and while the merits of increased comfort from the design can be argued, what isn't up for debate is the beautiful aesthetics and heel clearance it creates. After all, this frame is unique amid a sea of increasingly exaggerated "aero" monocoque carbon frame designs. Don't get us wrong, we're all for drag reduction and boosting efficiency through creative tube profiles, but the Eros' tube shapes harken back to the classic cycling days where frame designs were less about engineering software and wind tunnels and more about proper tube mitering and "stack of dimes" welds.
