Shimano Premium Oval Road Ring

The goal with oval chainrings is to maximize efficiency at the part of the pedal stroke where power is produced, while minimizing resistance at the less powerful part of the stroke. Not all oval chainrings are created equal. Timing and shape are the most crucial part of oval chainring design, and Absolute Black spent three years in development to perfect these elements. While most other brands retain the same timing (position of the crank arm relative to the oval), and shape of the oval across all their chainring sizes, Absolute Black optimizes timing and shape for each different chainring size, resulting in the best possible ride experience. Very Happy, with a Small Caution

I was looking to improve my climbing prowess, and decided to try this out. I've previously owned a set of Rotor oval rings on an older bike, so I'm familiar with the benefits. This time, I only purchased an INNER 36t oval ring, and the install was a snap. I feel that I could almost immediately feel an improvement in virtual climbs on Zwift, and achieving PR's on several mountain segments was good enough evidence for me! Caution: Your front ring upshifting will be slightly deteriorated if you're using only the inner oval chainring like me. It makes sense if think about it - depending on where your chain is on the inner ring (smallest oval diameter in this case), it can make upshifting to the bigger round ring a bit less smooth. Since I'm aware of this issue, I just ensure I don't upshift under high rpm and/or load. Downshifting from big round ring to smaller oval ring is not a problem at all. Overall, I'm extremely happy after a couple weeks. Hoping to crush climbing Colorado mountains later this year.

I returned this product before using it

The description states that the chainring should have 6-point ramp, however, 50t ring I received only has 4 upshifting ramps (see a picture of the back). According to Absolute Black support, only bigger rings like 53t have 6 ramps.

I've used it several times

***Disclaimer: This review is for the SRAM-compatible chainrings, but the same feedback applies (minus the required Shimano bolt covers ABC000E)*** I have been a convert to oval rings on the mountain and gravel side for some time now but had never explored their merits for pure road riding. Most look fairly wonky and take some time to adapt to, but neither of these factors is a concern with Absolute Black's offering. Your pedaling cadence will barely skip a beat and will likely improve overall. You'll find yourself pushing larger gears with a minimal increase to exertion. Chainring stiffness is also a noticeable improvement over stock rings. You can expect to see a slight bump in power readings over previous baselines, but a manual calibration before each ride and performing a new FTP test should eliminate these concerns. Your rides will be faster, use less energy and your bike will look quite fresh! So what's stopping you from going oval?


Do these just bolt on for a GRX 1x crankset?


Are these really compatible with 6800 cranks? The 6800 doesn't have that one curved attachment point with all four attachment points being the same.

Real Benefits

I've used it several times

I got the Sub-Compact Oval Rings but these are similar so I felt adding a review would be relevant. So far I've been vary pleased with them. First of all, they look really good - of course that's personal opinion, but 5 stars there. Be sure to get the Road Bolt Covers additionally for a clean transition from the beveled crankarm to the outer ring. Sadly those don't work with the subcompact rings so if we're considering those I'd dock a star. But how do they work? I found after bolting the oval rings to my bike that the shape wasn't very noticeable. However switching back to a bike with a round ring definitely is. These do tend to smooth out my pedaling stroke, especially when I'm tired and it starts to get choppy. I have no complaints at all about the timing. Whether it makes climbing easier is hard to say, I haven't noticed, but I don't usually track my ride data. On oval rings I've used in the past I've noticed they've thrown off my rhythm on long out of the saddle climbs, I have yet to experience that with these but don't have much climbing on them yet. Shifting has been decent. It does take some fine tuning of the front derailleur (and I have to make a couple more adjustments) and I'm coming from a single chainring so that's already a hassle, but they shift between rings when I want them to. Oval rings are definitely worth switching to and that's especially noticeable when you try round rings again where I found a lack of smoothness which I had grown to love with these rings. Now that Absolute Black makes these for most modern cranks, give it a try!
