Shimano Oval Traction Chainring

Designed to pair with your Shimano XT or XTR crankset, the Shimano Oval Traction Chainring brings claims of improved rear wheel traction resulting from a more consistent pedal stroke. Absolute Black claims that this oval profile maximizes power transfer and smooths the rotation by reducing dead spots and capitalizing on the sweet spots compared to standard round rings. Each chainring size features its own unique oval profile, but the mud-clearing and chain-retaining narrow-wide tooth profile is universal across sizes.

  • Oval chainrings for Shimano XT and XTR cranksets
  • Unique shape increases pedal efficiency and traction
  • Lightweight and durable aluminum construction
  • Narrow-wide tooth profiles improve chain retention

I've always had issues with my drive train. This Chainring seems to be doing the trick! Highly recommend.

great upgrade

I've used it several times
True to size

This chainring upgrade is pretty sweet. Put this on my Pivot Mach 5.5, a bike which already was an exceptional climber in rough terrain. First ride, the oval chainring provided a small but noticeable "boost" during climbing. As stated in many reviews this ring seems to give you a tiny push forward with each pedal stroke and makes it easier to navigate technical terrain and keep the bike moving forward. That said, after the first ride I began to not notice the advantages of this ring at all for the most part. Being an experienced mountain biker, I realize the small advantage that this ring is giving me, although i may not notice it on trail all the time. But here's the deal, If price was not an issue I would put an oval ring on every 1x mountain bike I own simply for the small "boost" it provides (using the word boost sparingly) There is no real disadvantage to having an oval ring except the price. Get one! Also if you have the exact xtr crankset in this link, this ring will not fit perfectly to your cranks. The little bolt covers will not fit properly and you will not be able to use them. I was able to put it together without the small bolt covers although it does look a little funky it seems to function properly.

Varying Quality / Experiences

I put a pair of these on my road bike and absolutely love them. I loved them so much that I spent hundreds of dollars to put one on my commuter. Worst decision ever. I throw my chain ALL THE TIME. It varies. Sometimes I'll go a whole week without throwing the chain. Today, on my 2.5 mile commute, I threw the chain three times, which is what spurred me to write this review. I've had the bike professionally tuned and adjusted twice. It doesn't help. If anything, it makes it worse. AB's customer service on the issue wasn't helpful either. They acknowledged that their rings aren't designed to keep the chain on "but we're working on it" they said. In the meantime, they suggested taking a link out of the chain to increase the tension. If anything, that only made it worse. I might recommend these for a road bike with a tight derailleur, but not on anything else. It's a shame. I do love them on my road bike, and conceptually, they SHOULD be awesome on a MTB or cross bike where they would improve traction. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did.

Will this fit Shimano SLX? I think it's M7000?

Up and over everything!

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I just got this ring and it does make a difference on those techie climbs and areas where you need to throw the hammer down to make it over an obstacle. I haven't noticed the ring's oval profile while I'm pedaling at a steady cadence and it definitely doesn't affect my knees like those previous generations of oval chainrings. The jury is still out on the longevity of this product but the machining quality is self evident when you see this ring in person. My initial impression of this ring is a definite grade A!

Works great!

It feels as though I have picked up a lower gear for climbing with no sacrifice in the higher gears.
