The centerpiece.

When designing the MK1 Bib Shorts, 7mesh Industries must have started from the ground up. While the upstart manufacturer doesn't specifically claim this, the details that inform the shorts' construction indicate that it didn't blindly adhere to any industry truisms. From fabric to fit and even the way the chamois is attached, the radically designed Bib Shorts may be the centerpiece of 7mesh's argument for becoming "the world's most respected cycling apparel brand."

While the shorts' warp knit nylon/elastane blend may seem familiar, the waffle patterning on the inside is a wholly unexpected feature. It increases surface area to mechanically boost the material's inherent wicking ability, keeping you drier and more comfortable. The material is arranged in panels that are darted and shaped, so they fit your body rather than deforming to stretch across it.

The number of panels used — and the seams needed to join them — are kept to a minimum to reduce abrasion. True to its own exacting standards, 7mesh was unwilling to sacrifice next-to-skin comfort in pursuit of superior fit. Given the lack of bunching and unrestricted movement we've enjoyed in these, no sacrifice was needed.

While the fit is excellent, the ingenious method of incorporating the chamois may be our favorite part of the shorts. Instead of being sewn directly to the shorts, the chamois is stitched to what 7mesh refers to as a hammock, but which might be more helpfully described as a free-floating panel of mesh. This mesh is then stitched to the shorts. The result is that the chamois moves with your body, independently of the body of the shorts, relocating the point of friction from the body/chamois interface to the chamois/shorts interface and all but eliminating chafing.

The chamois itself is a non-bulky affair from Cy-Tech's EIT wing, providing just the right amount of targeted, high-density foam padding for comfort without a pillowy diaper feel. A subtle central channel relieves pressure on your perineum without creating any abrasive ridges, and the soft microfiber face material breathes to keep you dry.

The MK1s have a high waist, a feature that may not appeal to all tastes but offers extended support that we certainly enjoy. The bib straps are designed with vertical stretch to eliminate restriction and a virtually flat profile that won't stand out through your jersey or interfere with layering and pack straps. Silicone grip at the wide, non-pinching leg bands keep the shorts in place and reflective detailing helps keep you visible in low-light conditions.

great comfort, well made

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: large

have worn them on long, hot rides in high humidity, and in the rain. none of the usual hot spots or chafing. straps are soft and stretchy, but they stay in place - no "readjusting".

i am not a big fan of compression - my previous go-to was older style giordana, which felt like wearing "no-pants". these bring back that feeling.

Unquestionable Comfort

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I have been using these bibs for my longer weekend rides and could not be happier. The best compliment I can give these bibs is that I forget that I am wearing them, no bunching, great pad, good straps. I was a little concerned when I first put them on that I was ruining a $200 pair of bibs, but I read other reviews and the tearing of stitches that you hear is just the shorts conforming to your body. I inspected all of the seems after a few wears and I didn't notice any issues. I will be adding another pair to my cycling wardrobe soon.

Awesome bibs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I have been using these bibs in preparation for RAAM 2016 solo. I have tried every bib on the high end including ASSOS and Castelli's latest. These bibs are remarkable. The padding is better than anything I have ever used. Elated to see that Competitive Cyclist has brought them in to the product line. One word of caution though is they fit very different. I take a medium in ASSOS and I am wearing a small in the MK1. The other thing to pay attention to is when you first put them on you almost think you are tearing out the stitching but it is the material "giving" to your personal fit.

Great bibs that provide comfort

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are very well made and thought out. My first experience with 7Mesh Industries was with their mountain bike shorts. Based off the well thought out design on those I decided to give these bibs a try.

What I appreciate about these bibs are as follows:
1. Great Chamois - Firm in the correct spots, soft in the right spots, not overdone or over padded.
2. Sizing is normal. I'm 6' and 190 lbs. Buying other companies in the bike industry can be frustrating trying to figure out the sizing. These size just as the size chart indicates.
3. The materials and design on these make the bibs feel great.

The one downside is the price but these are a premium bib short and after using them, I find them to be worth it.

Great job 7Mesh.

Shawn, what size MK1 bibs did you get? thanks.

Interested in new 7Mesh MK1 bib shorts and the brand in general (big fan of Arc'teryx off the bike and Assos bib shorts on the bike) and have a question on size. I wear a L in Assos, Gore and Rapha bib shorts. The 7Mesh size chart leads me to believe a M in the 7Mesh is the right fit. Hoping to get feedback on sizing before I take the plunge. Thanks!

Thank you for your interest in 7mesh. You are correct that our bib-shorts fit slightly larger compared to the sizing of other brands. If the size chart indicates you are a medium than that is very likely the right fit for you.

Thank you again for your interest. Please let us know if you have any more questions. We look forward to hearing your feedback on the bibs!
